This thesis describes the study of capacitively coupled plasmas excited with Tailored Voltage Waveforms (TVWs) and their use in silicon thin film fabrication for photovoltaic applications. Tailoring the voltage waveforms applied on an electrode of a plasma reactor is a recent technique, which has been developed after the discovery of the electrical asymmetry effect. Compared to standard sinewaves, TVWs are composed of a fundamental frequency, in the radio frequency domain, and its first harmonics. Any waveform can then be approximated by selecting the first components of its Fourier series. It has been shown for example that the ion energy can be controlled by the amplitude asymmetry of the waveform, the ion flux being kept constant. However, at high pressure, this decoupling weakens. We further explore the reasons behind it, using both simulations and experiments. Based on this knowledge, we make use of the ability of TVWs to vary the ion energy to understand its effect on silicon thin film deposition. We find well-defined energy thresholds above which we observe, through several characterization techniques, a lower nucleation density in the case of microcrystalline silicon growth. This indicates that ions with energy above these thresholds can break the crystalline bonds. We confirm this result by studying low-temperature epitaxial growth on a crystalline silicon wafer. Above the energy threshold, epitaxy breakdown occur, and distinct amorphous columns are observed in cross-section transmission electron microscopy images, which are initiated at locations where the crystal was broken by high energy ions.Because of unexpected different nucleation densities for sawtooth-up and down waveforms, despite the similar ion energies, we further explore the effect of these waveforms on plasma discharges. We find, using simulations in argon, that the asymmetry in the sheaths motion created by these waveforms induces a strong localization of the ionization events close to one electrode, and consequently a strong ion flux asymmetry. This localization is confirmed experimentally with phase-resolved optical emission spectroscopy. Surprisingly, we find that, for a given waveform, this asymmetry can be reversed for different chemistries (namely CF4 plasmas), because of different electron heating mechanisms. This new asymmetry can be fully controlled via the rise-to-fall ratio of the waveform, i.e. its temporal asymmetry, and therefore opens the path for new applications of TVWs.Cette thèse s’intéresse aux plasmas capacitivement couplés excités par des formes d’onde sur mesure et à leur utilisation pour le dépôt de couches minces de silicium pour applications dans le domaine du photovoltaïque.
Climate extremes in multi-model simulations of stratospheric aerosol and marine cloud brightening climate engineering
International audienceSimulations from a multi-model ensemble for the RCP4.5 climate change scenario for the 21st century, and for two solar radiation management (SRM) schemes (stratospheric sulfate injection (G3), SULF and marine cloud brightening by sea salt emission SALT) have been analysed in terms of changes in the mean and extremes of surface air temperature and precipitation. The climate engineering and termination periods are investigated. During the climate engineering period, both schemes, as intended, offset temperature increases by about 60 % globally, but are more effective in the low latitudes and exhibit some residual warming in the Arctic (especially in the case of SALT which is only applied in the low latitudes). In both climate engineering scenarios, extreme temperature changes are similar to the mean temperature changes over much of the globe. The exceptions are the mid-and high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, where high temperatures (90th percentile of the distribution) of the climate engineering period compared to RCP4.5 control period rise less than the mean, and cold temperatures (10th per-centile), much more than the mean. This aspect of the SRM schemes is also reflected in simulated reduction in the frost day frequency of occurrence for both schemes. However, summer day frequency of occurrence increases less in the SALT experiment than the SULF experiment, especially over the tropics. Precipitation extremes in the two SRM scenarios act differently – the SULF experiment more effectively mitigates extreme precipitation increases over land compared to the SALT experiment. A reduction in dry spell occurrence over land is observed in the SALT experiment. The SULF experiment has a slight increase in the length of dry spells. A strong termination effect is found for the two climate engineering schemes, with large temperature increases especially in the Arctic. Globally, SULF is more effective in reducing extreme temperature increases over land than SALT. Extreme precipitation increases over land is also more reduced in SULF than the SALT experiment. However, globally SALT decreases the frequency of dry spell length and reduces the occurrence of hot days compared to SULF
Ergodicity Condition for Zero-Sum Games
Minisymposia "Dynamic Games and Operators"International audienceFor zero-sum repeated stochastic games, basic questions are whether the mean payoff per time unit is independent of the initial state, and whether this property is robust to perturbations of rewards. In the case of finite action spaces, we show that the answer to both questions is positive if and only if an ergodicity condition involving fixed points of the recession function of the Shapley operator or reachability in directed hypergraphs is satisfied
Laser-plasma accelerators provide a promising compact alternative to conventional accelerators. Plasma waves with extremely strong electric fields are generated when a high intensity laser is focused into an underdense gas target. Electrons that are trapped in these laser-driven plasma waves can be accelerated up to energies of a few GeVs. Despite their great potential, laser-wakefield accelerators face some issues, regarding notably the stability and reproducibility of the beam when electrons are injected in the accelerating structure. In this manuscript, different techniques of electron injection are presented and compared, notably injection in a sharp density gradient and ionization injection. It is shown that combining these two methods allows for the generation of stable and tunable electron beams. We also studied a way to manipulate the electron bunch in the phase-space in order to accelerate the bunch beyond the dephasing limit. Such a technique was used with quasi-monoenergetic electron beams to enhance their energy. Moreover, the origin of the evolution of the angular momentum of electrons observed experimentally was investigated. Finally, we demonstrated experimentally a new method – the laser-plasma lens – to strongly reduce the divergence of the electron beam.
A General Optimal Multiple Stopping Problem with an Application to Swing Options
International audienceIn their paper, Carmona and Touzi [8] studied an optimal multiple stopping time problem in a market where the price process is continuous. In this article, we generalize their results when the price process is allowed to jump. Also, we generalize the problem associated to the valuation of swing options to the context of jump diffusion processes. We relate our problem to a sequence of ordinary stopping time problems. We characterize the value function of each ordinary stopping time problem as the unique viscosity solution of the associated Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman variational inequality

Essais en Macroéconomie
The first chapter of this thesis deals with households’ consumption-savings tradeoff in monetary policy models. The model’s fit with the data can be markedly improved first by the use of households specific interest rates, second by modelling households as inattentive agents. The second chapter proves analytically that the Taylor principle is valid in a model with both staggered prices and wages. According to the Taylor principle, when the central banker overreacts to inflationary shocks, he rules out sun spot equilibria and thus reduces economic fluctuations. This property is well known in models with staggered prices only, it had to be established analytically when wages are staggered. The third chapter quantifies domestic production (house-chores, cooking, handy work...) taking place out of the market. Valuing these activities induces an upward revision of economic activity but a downward revision of its growth. Methodological questions linked to the valuation of domestic work are discussed in details. The fourth chapter deals with the evaluation of structural reforms in institutional models (IMF, European Commission, ECB). The analysis of the core mechanisms of these models and their sensitivity to the calibration bring about two recommendations, first a systematic use of sensitivity analysis and more fundamentally a rethink of their long term mechanisms (in particular for labour supply).Le premier chapitre de cette thèse traite de l’arbitrage consommation-épargne des ménages dans les modèles de politique monétaire.
Regular Patterns in Second-Order Unification
International audienceThe second-order unification problem is undecidable. While unification procedures, like Huet's pre-unification, terminate with success on unifiable problems, they might not terminate on non-unifiable ones. There are several results which decides the unification problem for monadic signatures. These results are based on the regular structure of the solutions of problems over monadic signatures. In this paper we describe an enhancement to Huet's pre-unification procedure for arbitrary second-order signatures which, in some cases, terminates on problem on which the original pre-unification procedure fails to terminate. This is obtained by identifying regular patterns in non-regular partial solutions
