    Study of W boson production in pPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV

B ; see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceThe first study of W boson production in pPb collisions is presented, for bosons decaying to a muon or electron, and a neutrino. The measurements are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.6 inverse nanobarns at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment. The W boson differential cross sections, lepton charge asymmetry, and forward-backward asymmetries are measured for leptons of transverse momentum exceeding 25 GeV, and as a function of the lepton pseudorapidity in the abs(eta[lab]) < 2.4 range. Deviations from the expectations based on currently available parton distribution functions are observed, showing the need for including W boson data in nuclear parton distribution global fits

    A new model-free design for vehicle control and its validation through an advanced simulation platform

    International audienceA new model-free setting and the corresponding "intelligent" P and PD controllers are employed for the longitudinal and lateral motions of a vehicle. This new approach has been developed and used in order to ensure simultaneously a best profile tracking for the longitudinal and lateral behaviors. The longitudinal speed and the derivative of the lateral deviation, on one hand, the driving/braking torque and the steering angle, on the other hand, are respectively the output and the input variables. Let us emphasize that a "good" mathematical modeling, which is quite difficult, if not impossible to obtain, is not needed for such a design. An important part of this publication is focused on the presentation of simulation results with actual and virtual data. The actual data, used in Matlab as reference trajectories, have been obtained from a properly instrumented car (Peugeot 406). Other virtual sets of data have been generated through the interconnected platform SiVIC/RTMaps. It is a dedicated virtual simulation platform for prototyping and validation of advanced driving assistance systems

    Measurement-driven mobile data traffic modeling in a large metropolitan area

    International audienceUnderstanding mobile data traffic demands is crucial to the evaluation of strategies addressing the problem of high bandwidth usage and scalability of network resources, brought by the pervasive era. In this paper, we conduct the first detailed measurement-driven modeling of smartphone subscribers' mobile traffic usage in a metropolitan scenario. We use a large-scale dataset collected inside the core of a major 3G network of Mexico's capital. We first analyse individual subscribers routinary behaviour and observe identical usage patterns on different days. This motivates us to choose one day for studying the subscribers' usage pattern (i.e., "when" and "how much" traffic is generated) in detail. We then classify the subscribers in four distinct profiles according to their usage pattern. We finally model the usage pattern of these four subscriber profiles according to two different journey periods: peak and non-peak hours.We show that the synthetic trace generated by our data traffic model consistently imitates different subscriber profiles in two journey periods, when compared to the original dataset

The distributions are corrected for detector effects, and compared with predictions from several Monte Carlo event generators. Of the leading order Monte Carlo programs, MADGRAPH displays the best overall agreement with the data

    Plasma Luminescence from Femtosecond Filaments in Air: Evidence for Impact Excitation with Circularly Polarized Light Pulses

    International audienceFilaments produced in air by intense femtosecond laser pulses emit UV luminescence from excited N2 and N+2 molecules. We report on a strong dependence at high intensities (I≥1.4×1014  W/cm2) of this luminescence with the polarization state of the incident laser pulses. We attribute this effect to the onset of new impact excitation channels from energetic electrons produced with circularly polarized laser pulses above a threshold laser intensity

    A fresh look at ramp metering control: ALINEA without any tedious calibration

    ALINEA is a well known ramp metering closed-loop control the aim of which is to improve highway traffic.This report shows that ALINEA may be slightly modified in order to be efficiently implemented without any need of crucial time-varying quantities, like the critical density and the free-flow speed, which are most difficult to estimate correctly online.     Quantitative Information Flow for Scheduler-Dependent Systems

    International audienceQuantitative information flow analyses measure how much information on secrets is leaked by publicly observable outputs. One area of interest is to quantify and estimate the information leakage of composed systems. Prior work has focused on running disjoint component systems in parallel and reasoning about the leakage compositionally, but has not explored how the component systems are run in parallel or how the leakage of composed systems can be minimised. In this paper we consider the manner in which parallel systems can be combined or scheduled. This considers the effects of scheduling channels where resources may be shared, or whether the outputs may be incrementally observed. We also generalise the attacker's capability, of observing outputs of the system, to consider attackers who may be imperfect in their observations, e.g. when outputs may be confused with one another, or when assessing the time taken for an output to appear. Our main contribution is to present how scheduling and observation effect information leakage properties. In particular, that scheduling can hide some leaked information from perfect observers, while some scheduling may reveal secret information that is hidden to imperfect observers. In addition we present an algorithm to construct a scheduler that minimises the min-entropy leakage and min-capacity in the presence of any observer

    A Convergent Data Completion Algorithm Using Surface Integral Equations

    International audienceWe propose and analyze a data completion algorithm based on the representation of the solution in terms of surface integral operators to solve the Cauchy problem for the Helmholtz or the Laplace equations. The proposed method is non iterative and intrinsically handle the case of noisy and incompatible data. In order to cope with the ill-posedness of the problem, our formulation is compatible with standard regularization methods associated with linear ill posed inverse problems and leads to convergent scheme. We numerically validate our method with different synthetic examples using a Tikhonov regularization

    Shot-to-shot intensity and wavefront stability of high-harmonic generation

    International audienceWe report on the shot-to-shot stability of intensity and spatial phase of high-harmonic generation (HHG). The intensity stability is measured for each high-harmonic (HH) order with a spectrometer. Additionally, the spatial phase is measured with an XUV wavefront sensor for a single HH order measured in a single shot, which according to our knowledge was not reported before with a Hartmann wavefront sensor. Furthermore, we compare the single-shot measurement of the spatial phase with time-integrated measurements and we show that the XUV wavefront sensor is a useful tool to simultaneously optimize the spatial phase and intensity of HHG within the available HHG parameter range used in this study
