Diurnal temperature range variation and its causes in a semiarid region from 1957 to 2006

    No full text
International audienceThe diurnal temperature range (DTR) is an important indicator of climate change, and it has decreased worldwide since the 1950s, particularly over arid and semiarid regions. This study analyses the effect of meteorological and anthropogenic factors on DTR variation to investigate the possible causes of DTR decreases in semiarid climates. The study region is located in northeast China, and the study period is from 1957 to 2006. There are three main results. First, the rate of decrease in the DTR is −1.24 K per 50 years. This decrease is mainly attributed to the increasing daily minimum temperature rate (Tmin, 2.24 K per 50 years), which is greater than the change in the daily maximum temperature (Tmax, 1.00 K per 50 years). Second, sunshine duration (SD) appears to be the most significant meteorological factor that determines the DTR through downward shortwave radiation (Rsw,d) and surface soil moisture (SM). The effect of Rsw,d is larger for Tmax than for Tmin; therefore, the decrease in Rsw,d results in a smaller increase in Tmax than in Tmin. On the other hand, the increase in SM can strengthen daytime latent heat release, and the increase in Tmax is then slowed because of the cooling effect of evaporation. The precipitation values and the leaf area index show a negative correlation with the DTR, whereas the cloud amount and the relative humidity appear not to be main causes of the DTR decrease in this region. Finally, atmospheric aerosols can reduce the SD by 0.27 h year–1 by decreasing atmospheric transparency, as indicated by an analysis of the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer Aerosol Index from 1979 to 2005. The decrease in direct solar radiation is the main cause of decreases in Rsw,d. These findings will provide references for DTR variation studies in similar climates

Transient variations of vertical total electron content over some African stations from 2002 to 2012

International audienceThis paper presents the vertical total electron content vTEC variations for three African stations, located at mid-low and equatorial latitudes, and operating since more than 10 years. The vTEC of the middle latitude GPS station in Alexandria, Egypt (31.2167°N; 29.9667°E, geographic) is compared to the vTEC of two others GPS stations: the first one in Rabat/Morocco (33.9981°N; 353.1457°E, geographic), and the second in Libreville/Gabon (0.3539°N; 9.6721°E, geographic). Our results discussed the diurnal, seasonal, and solar cycle dependences of vTEC at the local ionospheric conditions, during different phases of solar cycle in the light of the classification of Legrand and Simon. The vTEC over Alexandria exhibits the well-known equinoctial asymmetry which changes with the phases of the solar cycle; the spring vTEC is larger than that of autumn during the maximum, decreasing and minimum phases of solar cycle 23. During the increasing phase of solar cycle 24, it is the contrary. The diurnal variation of the vTEC presents multiple maxima during the equinox from 2005 to 2008 and during the summer solstice from 2006 to 2012. A nighttime vTEC enhancement and winter anomaly are also observed. During the deep solar minimum (2006–2009) the diurnal variation of the vTEC observed over Alexandria is similar to the diurnal variation observed during quiet magnetic period at equatorial latitudes. We observed also that the amplitude of vTEC at Libreville is larger than the amplitude of vTEC observed at Alexandria and Rabat, indeed Libreville is near the southern crest of the Equatorial Ionization anomaly. Finally, the correlation coefficient between vTEC and the sunspot number Rz is high and changes with solar cycle phases

    Time-resolved imaging of nanosecond-pulsed micro-discharges in heptane

International audienceNanosecond-pulsed micro-discharges in heptane are studied by time-resolved imaging in pin-to-plate configuration. When a voltage of +5 kV is applied to the pin electrode, the discharge exhibits one maximum in light intensity. At +15 kV, filtered images show that up to three maxima can be identified. These maxima are associated with local electron-ion recombination and bremsstrahlung emission and attributed to the development of a complex space-charge field. In the post-discharge, the dynamics of the gas bubble can be simulated by the Gilmore model, and the pressure evolution in this bubble is predicted. From our results, it seems reasonable to think that the gas bubble develops from the post-discharge of the spark. Results obtained by using the double-pulse technique show that light emission during the post-discharge of the second discharge lasts 10 times longer than the post-discharge of the first spark. The pressure drop in the gas bubble, predicted by the Gilmore model, is used to explain this result and it provides a control method by optical diagnostics in liquids

    Faster FFTs in medium precision

    No full text
In this paper, we present new algorithms for the computation of fast Fourier transforms over complex numbers for "medium" precisions, typically in the range from 100 until 400 bits. On the one hand, such precisions are usually not supported by hardware. On the other hand, asymptotically fast algorithms for multiple precision arithmetic do not pay off yet. The main idea behind our algorithms is to develop efficient vectorial multiple precision fixed point arithmetic, capable of exploiting SIMD instructions in modern processors

Simultaneous local exact controllability of 1D bilinear Schrödinger equations

To appear in Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Anal. Non LinéaireWe consider N independent quantum particles, in an infinite square potential well coupled to an external laser field. These particles are modelled by a system of linear Schrödinger equations on a bounded interval. This is a bilinear control system in which the state is the N-tuple of wave functions. The control is the real amplitude of the laser field. For N=1, Beauchard and Laurent proved local exact controllability around the ground state in arbitrary time. We prove, under an extra generic assumption, that their result does not hold in small time if N is greater or equal than 2. Still, for N=2, we prove using Coron's return method that local controllability holds either in arbitrary time up to a global phase or exactly up to a global delay. We also prove that for N greater or equal than 3, local controllability does not hold in small time even up to a global phase. Finally, for N=3, we prove that local controllability holds up to a global phase and a global delay

Strongly correlated alignment of fluorinated 5,11-bis(triethylgermylethynyl)anthradithiophene crystallites in solution-processed field-effect transistors

International audienceThe crystallinity of an organic semiconductor film determines the efficiency of charge transport in electronic devices. This report presents a micro-to-nanoscale investigation on the crystal growth of fluorinated 5,11-bis(triethylgermylethynyl)anthradithiophene (diF-TEG-ADT) and its implication for the electrical behavior of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). diF-TEG-ADT exhibits remarkable self-assembly through spin-cast preparation, with highly aligned edge-on stacking creating a fast hole-conducting channel for OFETs

Short-term solar irradiance and irradiation forecasts via different time series techniques: A preliminary study

    No full text
International audienceThis communication is devoted to solar irradiance and irradiation short-term forecasts, which are useful for electricity production. Several different time series approaches are employed. Our results and the corresponding numerical simulations show that techniques which do not need a large amount of historical data behave better than those which need them, especially when those data are quite noisy
