Measurement of long-range near-side two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV
Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett, see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceResults on two-particle angular correlations for charged particles produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are presented. The data were taken with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 270 inverse nanobarns. The correlations are studied over a broad range of pseudorapidity (abs(eta)2.0), near-side (Delta phi ~ 0) structure emerges in the two-particle Delta eta-Delta phi correlation functions. The magnitude of the correlation exhibits a pronounced maximum in the range 1.0<pt<2.0GeV/c and an approximately linear increase with the charged particle multiplicity. The overall correlation strength at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV is similar to that found in earlier pp data at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, but is measured up to much higher multiplicity values. The observed long-range correlations are compared to those seen in pp, pPb, and PbPb collisions at lower collision energies
Search for W' to tb in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV
Submitted to J. High Energy Phys ; see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceA search is performed for the production of a massive W' boson decaying to a top and a bottom quark. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse-femtobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The hadronic decay products of the top quark with high Lorentz boost from the W' boson decay are detected as a single top flavoured jet. The use of jet substructure algorithms allows the top quark jet to be distinguished from standard model QCD background. Limits on the production cross section of a right-handed W' boson are obtained, together with constraints on the left-handed and right-handed couplings of the W' boson to quarks. The production of a right-handed W' boson with a mass below 2.02 TeV decaying to a hadronic final state is excluded at 95\% confidence level. This mass limit increases to 2.15 TeV when both hadronic and leptonic decays are considered, and is the most stringent lower mass limit to date in the tb decay mode
Search for pair-produced vector-like B quarks in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV
Submitted to Phys. Rev. D ; see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceA search for the production of a heavy B quark, having electric charge -1/3 and vector couplings to W, Z, and H bosons, is carried out using proton-proton collision data recorded at the CERN LHC by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The B quark is assumed to be pair-produced and to decay in one of three ways: to tW, bZ, or bH. The search is carried out in final states with one, two, and more than two charged leptons, as well as in fully hadronic final states. Each of the channels in the exclusive final-state topologies is designed to be sensitive to specific combinations of the B quark-antiquark pair decays. The observed event yields are found to be consistent with the standard model expectations in all the final states studied. A statistical combination of these results is performed and upper limits are set on the cross section of the strongly produced B quark-antiquark pairs as a function of the B quark mass. Lower limits on the B quark mass between 740 and 900 GeV are set at a 95% confidence level, depending on the values of the branching fractions of the B quark to tW, bZ, and bH. Overall, these limits are the most stringent to date
Reducing the debt : is it optimal to outsource an investment?
International audienceWe deal with the problem of outsourcing the debt for a big investment, according two situations: either the firm outsources both the investment (and the associated debt) and the exploitation to a private consortium, or the firm supports the debt and the investment but outsources the exploitation. We prove the existence of Stackelberg and Nash equilibria between the firm and the private consortium, in both situations. We compare the benefits of these contracts. We conclude with a study of what happens in case of incomplete information, in the sense that the risk aversion coefficient of each partner may be unknown by the other partner
Null-controllability of the Kolmogorov equation in the whole phase space
International audienceWe prove the null controllability, in arbitrary positive time, of the Kolmogorov equation ∂t + v · ∇x − ∆v with (x, v) ∈ R d × R d , with a control region of the form ω = ωx × ωv, where both ωx and ωv are open subsets of R d that are sufficiently spread out throughout the whole space R d. The proof is based on, on the one hand, a spectral inequality in R d with an observation on ωx, and, on the other hand, a Carleman-based observability inequality for a family of parabolic operators, ∂t − iv · ξ − ∆v, coupled with a knowledge of the decay rate of the free solutions of the Kolmogorov equation
Search for supersymmetry with a photon, a lepton, and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV
Submitted to Phys. Lett. B, see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceA search for supersymmetry involving events with at least one photon, one electron or muon, and large missing transverse momentum has been performed by the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns of pp collisions at sqrt(s)=8 TeV, produced at the CERN LHC. No excess of events is observed beyond expectations from standard model processes. The result of the search is interpreted in the context of a general model of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, where the charged and neutral winos are the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particles. Within this model, winos with a mass up to 360 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level. Two simplified models inspired by gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking are also examined, and used to derive upper limits on the production cross sections of specific supersymmetric processes
A robust inversion method for quantitative 3D shape reconstruction from coaxial eddy-current measurements
International audienceThis work is motivated by the monitoring of conductive clogging deposits in steam generator at the level of support plates. One would like to use multistatic measurements from coaxial coils in order to obtain estimates on the clogging volume. We propose a 3D shape optimization technique based on simplified shape parametrization of the deposit. This parametrization is adapted to the measurement nature and resolution. The direct problem is modeled by the eddy current approximation of time-harmonic Maxwell’s equations in the low frequency regime. A potential formulation is adopted in order to easily handle the complex topology of the industrial problem setting. We first characterize the shape derivatives of the deposit impedance signal using an adjoint field technique. For the inversion procedure, the direct and adjoint problems have to be solved for each vertical probe position which is excessively time- and memory-consuming. To overcome this difficulty, we propose and discuss a steepest descent method based on a invariant mesh. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the convergence and the efficiency of the method
Additive properties of sequences of pseudo -th powers
International audienceIn this paper, we study (random) sequences of pseudo s-th powers, as introduced by Erdös and Rényi in 1960. In 1975, Goguel proved that such a sequence is almost surely not an asymptotic basis of order s. Our first result asserts that it is however almost surely a basis of order s + x for any x > 0. We then study the s-fold sumset sA = A + ... + A (s times) and in particular the minimal size of an additive complement, that is a set B such that sA + B contains all large enough integers. With respect to this problem, we prove quite precise theorems which are tantamount to asserting that a threshold phenomenon occurs
Spectral analysis and the Aharonov-Bohm effect on certain almost-Riemannian manifolds
28 pages, 6 figuresInternational audienceWe study spectral properties of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on two relevant almost-Riemannian manifolds, namely the Grushin structures on the cylinder and on the sphere. As for general almost-Riemannian structures (under certain technical hypothesis), the singular set acts as a barrier for the evolution of the heat and of a quantum particle, although geodesics can cross it. This is a consequence of the self-adjointness of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on each connected component of the manifolds without the singular set. We get explicit descriptions of the spectrum, of the eigenfunctions and their properties. In particular in both cases we get a Weyl law with dominant term . We then study the effect of an Aharonov-Bohm non-apophantic magnetic potential that has a drastic effect on the spectral properties. Other generalized Riemannian structures including conic and anti-conic type manifolds are also studied. In this case, the Aharonov-Bohm magnetic potential may affect the self-adjointness of the Laplace-Beltrami operator
