    A Polynomial-Time Attack on the BBCRS Scheme

    International audienceThe BBCRS scheme is a variant of the McEliece public-key encryption scheme where the hiding phase is performed by taking the inverse of a matrix which is of the form T+R where T is a sparse matrix with average row/column weight equal to a very small quantity m, usually m<2, and R is a matrix of small rank z⩾1. The rationale of this new transformation is the reintroduction of families of codes, like generalized Reed-Solomon codes, that are famously known for representing insecure choices. We present a key-recovery attack when z=1 and m is chosen between 1 and 1+R+O(1/\sqrt{n}) where R denotes the code rate. This attack has complexity O(n^6) and breaks all the parameters suggested in the literature

    Search for pair-produced resonances decaying to jet pairs in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)= 8 TeV

B, see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceResults are reported of a general search for pair production of heavy resonances decaying to pairs of jets in events with at least four jets. The study is based on up to 19.4 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. Limits are determined on the production of scalar top quarks (top squarks) in the framework of R-parity violating supersymmetry and on the production of color-octet vector bosons (colorons). First limits at the LHC are placed on top squark production for two scenarios. The first assumes decay to a bottom quark and a light-flavor quark and is excluded for masses between 200 and 385 GeV, and the second assumes decay to a pair of light-flavor quarks and is excluded for masses between 200 and 350 GeV at 95% confidence level. Previous limits on colorons decaying to light-flavor quarks are extended to exclude masses from 200 to 835 GeV

    Searches for supersymmetry based on events with b jets and four W bosons in pp collisions at 8 TeV

B; see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceFive mutually exclusive searches for supersymmetry are presented based on events in which b jets and four W bosons are produced in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 inverse femtobarns, were collected with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2012. The five studies differ in the leptonic signature from the W boson decays, and correspond to all-hadronic, single-lepton, opposite-sign dilepton, same-sign dilepton, and >3 lepton final states. The results of the five studies are combined to yield 95% confidence level exclusions of 1280 and 570 GeV for the gluino and bottom-squark masses in the context of gluino and bottom-squark pair production, respectively. These limits are around 50 GeV more stringent than are obtained from any of the individual channels

    Identification of Biological Regulatory Networks from Process Hitting models

    International audienceQualitative formalisms offer a well-established alternative to the more tradi-tionally used differential equation models of Biological Regulatory Networks (BRNs). These formalisms led to numerous theoretical works and practical tools to understand emerging behaviors. The analysis of the dynamics of very large models is however a rather hard problem, which led us to previously in-troduce the Process Hitting framework (PH), which is a particular class of non-deterministic asynchronous automata network (or safe Petri nets). Its major advantage lies in the efficiency of several static analyses recently designed to assess dynamical properties, making it possible to tackle very large models. In this paper, we address the formal identification of qualitative models of BRNs from PH models. First, the inference of the Interaction Graph from a PH model summarizes the signed influences between the components that are effective for the dynamics. Second, we provide the inference of all René-Thomas models of BRNs that are compatible with a given PH. As the PH allows the specification of nondeterministic interactions between components, our inference emphasizes the ability of PH to deal with large BRNs with incomplete knowledge on interactions, where Thomas's approach fails because of the combinatorics of parameters. The inference of corresponding Thomas models is implemented using An-swer Set Programming, which allows in particular an efficient enumeration of (possibly numerous) compatible parametrizations

    Study of Z production in PbPb and pp collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV in the dimuon and dielectron decay channels

    see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceThe production of Z bosons is studied in the dimuon and dielectron decay channels in PbPb and pp collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The PbPb data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 150 inverse microbarns, while the pp data sample collected in 2013 at the same nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy has an integrated luminosity of 5.4 inverse picobarns. The Z boson yield is measured as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality. The ratio of PbPb to pp yields, scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions, is found to be 1.06 +/- 0.05 (stat) +/- 0.08 (syst) in the dimuon channel and 1.02 +/- 0.08 (stat) +/- 0.15 (syst) in the dielectron channel, for centrality-integrated Z boson production. This binary collision scaling is seen to hold in the entire kinematic region studied, as expected for a colourless probe that is unaffected by the hot and dense QCD medium produced in heavy ion collisions

    Study of vector boson scattering and search for new physics in events with two same-sign leptons and two jets

The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector. Candidate events are selected with exactly two leptons of the same charge, two jets with large rapidity separation and dijet mass, and moderate missing transverse energy. The signal region is expected to be dominated by electroweak same-sign W-boson pair production. The observation agrees with the standard model prediction. The observed significance is 2.0 standard deviations, where a significance of 3.1 standard deviations is expected based on the standard model. Cross section measurements for W+/- W+/- and WZ processes in the fiducial region are reported. Bounds on the structure of quartic vector-boson interactions are given in the framework of dimension-eight effective field theory operators, as well as limits on the production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons

    Adaptive Multinomial Matrix Completion

    The task of estimating a matrix given a sample of observed entries is known as the \emph{matrix completion problem}. Most works on matrix completion have focused on recovering an unknown real-valued low-rank matrix from a random sample of its entries. Here, we investigate the case of highly quantized observations when the measurements can take only a small number of values. These quantized outputs are generated according to a probability distribution parametrized by the unknown matrix of interest. This model corresponds, for example, to ratings in recommender systems or labels in multi-class classification. We consider a general, non-uniform, sampling scheme and give theoretical guarantees on the performance of a constrained, nuclear norm penalized maximum likelihood estimator. One important advantage of this estimator is that it does not require knowledge of the rank or an upper bound on the nuclear norm of the unknown matrix and, thus, it is adaptive. We provide lower bounds showing that our estimator is minimax optimal. An efficient algorithm based on lifted coordinate gradient descent is proposed to compute the estimator. A limited Monte-Carlo experiment, using both simulated and real data is provided to support our claims

    Search for new resonances decaying via WZ to leptons in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=8 TeV

B ; see paper for full list of authorsA search is performed in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV for exotic particles decaying via WZ to fully leptonic final states with electrons, muons, and neutrinos. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 inverse femtobarns. No significant excess is observed above the expected standard model background. Upper bounds at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section of a W' boson as predicted by an extended gauge model, and on the W'WZ coupling. The expected and observed mass limits for a W' boson, as predicted by this model, are 1.55 and 1.47 TeV, respectively. Stringent limits are also set in the context of low-scale technicolor models under a range of assumptions for the model parameters

    Search for the standard model Higgs boson produced through vector boson fusion and decaying to b bbar

D ; see paper for full list of authorsInternational audienceA first search is reported for a standard model Higgs boson (H) that is produced through vector boson fusion and decays to a bottom-quark pair. Two data samples, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 19.8 inverse femtobarns and 18.3 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=8 TeV were selected for this channel at the CERN LHC. The observed significance in these data samples for a H to b bbar signal at a mass of 125 GeV is 2.2 standard deviations, whilst the expected significance is 0.8 standard deviations. The fitted signal strength mu=sigma/sigma[SM]=2.8 + 1.6 - 1.4. The combination of this result with other CMS searches for the Higgs boson decaying to a b-quark pair, yields a signal strength of 1.0 +/- 0.4, corresponding to a signal significance of 2.6 standard deviations for a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV

    Defining the abatement cost in presence of learning-by-doing: application to the fuel cell electric vehicle

    The transition of a sector from a pollutant state to a clean one is studied. A green technology, subject to learning-by-doing, progressively replaces an old one. The notion of abatement cost in this dynamic context is fully characterized. The theoretical,dynamic optimization, perspective is linked to simple implementation rules. The practical "deployment" perspective allows to study sub-optimal trajectories. Moreover, the analysis of the launching date provides a denition of a dynamic abatement cost easy to use for evaluation of real-world policy options. The case of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles offers an illustration of the proposed methodology
