    Quantifying Forbush Decrease with a Numerical Model Evaluation

    <p>Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02) has emerged as a cornerstone for precise cosmic-ray (CR) spectra measurements, fostering diverse scientific advancements. However, challenges arise at lower energies due to temporal variations in solar activity, impacting CR intensity assessments. Notably, recent daily flux measurements enable the exploration of solar perturbations, such as Coronal Mass Ejections, unveiling Forbush effects at varying particle energies. This study presents a comparison of Forbush decreases observed by AMS-02 with predictions derived from numerical models. By scrutinizing multiple instances, we seek to enhance our understanding of the particle propagation in the interplanetary medium. The findings contribute to improve the reliability of numerical models to interpret AMS-02 observations in the context of solar phenomena.</p&gt

    Charm quark mass using a massive nonperturbative renormalisation scheme

    We present a first numerical implementation of a massive nonperturbative renormalisation scheme, RI/mSMOM, in the study of heavy quarks using the domain-wall fermion action. In particular, we calculate renormalisation constants for fermion bilinears at non-vanishing heavy-quark masses and compare the approach to the continuum of the renormalised charm-quark mass with that from a mass-independent scheme

    <p>This dataset forms the basis of our research paper "Synthetic Lagrangian Turbulence by Generative Diffusion Models" published in Nature Machine Intelligence. It is available for download from the open-access Smart-TURB portal: http://smart-turb.roma2.infn.it, in the TURB-Lagr repository (DOI: 10.48550/arXiv.2303.08662). Instructions on how to read the dataset can be found in the code repository at https://github.com/SmartTURB/diffusion-lagr.</p>\n\n<p>The files "Lagr_u1c_diffusion.h5" and "Lagr_u3c_diffusion.h5" are the datasets used to train the DM-1c and DM-3c models respectively. Correspondingly, "Lagr_u1c_diffusion-demo.h5" and "Lagr_u3c_diffusion-demo.h5" serve as their minimum datasets for testing the code. The files "samples_358400x2000x1_DM-1c.npz" and "samples_358400x2000x3_DM-3c.npz" are generated outputs from the DM-1c and DM-3c models. They support all the analyses presented in the paper.</p&gt

    Transparent extension of INFN-T1 with heterogeneous computing architectures

    <p><span>The INFN-CNAF Tier-1 is engaged for years in a continuous effort to integrate</span><br><span>its computing centre with more typologies of computing resources. In particular, the challenge</span><br><span>of providing opportunistic access to nonstandard CPU architectures, such as PowerPC, ARM</span><br><span>or hardware accelerators (GPUs) has been actively exploited.</span> <span>In this work, we describe a</span><br><span>solution to transparently integrate access to ppc64 and GPUs.</span> <span>This solution has been tested</span><br><span>to transparently extend the INFN-T1 Grid computing centre with Power9 based machines and</span><br><span>V100 GPUs from the Marconi 100 HPC cluster managed by CINECA, and eventually used for</span><br><span>the next CINECA machine, Leonardo. We also discuss further possible improvements and how</span><br><span>this will meet requirements and future plans for the new tecnopolo centre, where the CNAF</span><br><span>Tier-1 will be hosted soon.</span></p&gt

    Quantitative Assessment of Geosites and Mine Heritage as a Resource: The Case Study of Lungro Salt Mine (Calabria, Italy)

    <p>In this work, the old Lungro mining site was studied by applying two classification methods (Brilha and IELIG Method), considering the site-specific scientific, educational, touristic, and degradation aspects, to promote it as a geosite. The results were compared with those from other worldwide areas, and a potential re-evaluation in the tourism sector was suggested, considering historical data and geological issues. The methods used evaluate the Lungro site an average score from a scientific perspective, and from high to very high for the tourist-educational aspects. On the contrary, lower scores were found regarding the degradation of the site due to natural phenomena, led to a lower total score. The obtained results are comparable with other similar restored mining areas, located in various parts of the world which today represent important geotourists sites recognized internationally.<br>\nBased on these results, the safest, most cost-effective, and straightforward way to preserve and restore the site is by creating a “Geotourism Route.“. This choice would increase awareness of the area, providing the general public, including the curious and “non-experts”, with an understanding of various geological processes and the extensive history of the mine. A campaign to promote and preserve the Lungro site as a geoheritage will be encouraged, with significant implications for tourism at the local, national, and international levels.</p&gt
