Bound by experience: updating the body representation when using virtual objects

    No full text
Objective: Four web-based experiments investigated flexibility of disembodiment of a virtual object that is no longer actively controlled. Emphasis was on possibilities to modify the timescale of this process. Background: Interactions with virtual objects are commonplace in settings like teleoperation, rehabilitation, and computer-aided design. These objects are quickly integrated into the operator’s body schema (embodiment). Less is known about how long such embodiment lasts. Understanding the dynamics of this process is crucial because different applied settings either profit from fast or slow disembodiment. Method: To induce embodiment, participants moved a 2D virtual hand through operating a computer mouse or touchpad. After initial embodiment, participants either stopped or continued moving for a fixed period of time. Embodiment ratings were collected continuously during each trial. Results: Results across all experiments indicated that embodiment for the virtual hand gradually increased during active use and gradually decreased after stopping to use it. Disembodiment unfolded nearly twice as fast as embodiment and showed a curved decay pattern. These dynamics remained unaffected by anticipation of active control that would be required in an upcoming task. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of continuously experiencing active control in virtual interactions if aiming at inducing stable embodiment of a virtual object. Application: Our findings suggest that applications of virtual disembodiment such as virtual tools or interventions to affect a person’s body representation critically depend on continuous updating of sensorimotor experience. However, if switching between virtual objects, for example, during teleoperation or video gaming, after-effects are unlikely to affect performance

Direct and indirect effects of land use on microbiomes of trap-nesting solitary bee larvae and nests

Introduction: The global decline in biodiversity and insect populations highlights the urgent need to conserve ecosystem functions, such as plant pollination by solitary bees. Human activities, particularly agricultural intensification, pose significant threats to these essential services. Changes in land use alter resource and nest site availability, pesticide exposure and other factors impacting the richness, diversity, and health of solitary bee species. In this study, we investigated yet another facet currently less well investigated in such context: Microbial communities associated with wild bees play crucial roles in larval development, metabolism, immunity and overall bee health. However, the drivers and dynamics of healthy microbiome in solitary bees are still poorly understood, especially regarding the direct and indirect effects of land use on the diversity and composition of these microbial communities. Methods: We examined bacterial communities in the offspring and nest materials of the Megachilid trap-nesting solitary bee, Osmia bicornis, along a gradient of land use intensification by 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding. Given that landscape composition, climatic conditions, and food resources are known to influence microbial compositions in solitary bee species, we hypothesized that land use changes would alter resources available for food and nest material collection and thereby affecting the microbiomes in offspring and their nest environments. We anticipated reduced microbial diversity and altered composition with increased land use intensification, which is known to decrease the number and diversity of resources, including the pool of floral and soil bacteria in the surrounding environment. Results: As expected, we observed significant shifts in the bacterial composition and diversity of bees and their nests across varying degrees of land use intensity, differing in management types and the availability of flowers. The Shannon diversity of bacteria in nest materials (larval pollen provision, soil nest enclosure) and larval guts decreased with increasing land use intensity. However, the pupae microbiome remained unaffected, indicating a reorganization of the microbiome during metamorphosis, which is not significantly influenced by land use and available resources. Discussion: Our findings provide new insights into the factors shaping environmental transmission and changes in solitary bee microbiomes. This understanding is crucial for comprehending the impacts of intensive land use on wild bee health and developing strategies to mitigate these effects

Hierbei wurden u. a. Background E‑scooters have been part of road traffic in Germany for over 4.5 years and have since then become more important in police traffic control. The present study aims to give a first description of e‑scooter cases in the catchment area of the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Würzburg. Material and methods All driving ability reports on e‑scooter riders (n = 84) between June 2019 and January 2024 were retrospectively evaluated. Performance deficits, driving errors, circumstances and the substances detected in blood were analyzed. Results Almost all e‑scooter riders in our study population were men aged between 20–30 years. Most riders were under the influence of cannabis, amphetamines or alcohol. The main reason for traffic control was missing or expired insurance license plates. The times of offenses had a tendency towards the evening through night and towards warmer seasons of the year. The offenders showed less performance impairment during the medical examination performed later than during the police examination. Discussion Compared to previous e‑scooter studies, this work also examined the influence of drugs on e‑scooter riders. The retrospective data analysis revealed similar trends, e.g., in terms of age, gender and seasonal distribution but also some differences. The results show the need of further studies examining the influence of drugs on e‑scooter riding

Artificial intelligence (AI) can now be used to produce a wide range of creative content, such as images, stories, music or poems. Reactions to this technological advancement could have an impact on the future development and use of this technology. This thesis examines how the information that creative content has been generated by an AI influences the experience and evaluation of creative works. The focus here is on the reception of stories and images. Possible effects on different forms of experience and judgment are examined using different stimuli materials. In addition, the mechanisms underlying these effects are tested using empirical methods. Furthermore, the potential influence of various individual differences on reactions to AI artist or author information is examined. Manuscript 1 presents the results of two experiments (N1 = 325, N2 = 489) that indicate a negative influence of AI author information on transportation into a story. Furthermore, it was shown that genre of the story can influence this effect. The negative effects of AI author information are only evident for contemporary fiction stories, but not for the science fiction genre. The eeriness experienced while reading and the willingness to share the story are not influenced by AI artist information as originally hypothesized. Openness, affinity for technology and attitude towards AI do not influence the effect of author information on transportation. Manuscript 2 examines in two experiments (N1 = 176, N2 = 381) whether a lower appreciation of supposedly AI-generated images can be attributed to the reduced agency and experience ascribed to AI compared to humans. Both experiments show a significant indirect effect of AI artist information on the appreciation of AI-generated images, although no total effect can be observed. In addition, a positive deviation from pre-set expectations is considered as a potential mediator of a positive effect of AI artist information on appreciation. However, no mediating effect becomes apparent. Manuscript 3 addresses a possible algorithmic bias in AI-generated images. Results of a content analysis of 324 AI-generated images of people working in STEM professions show that women and POC are strongly underrepresented. Results of an experiment (N = 495) indicate that these biases are not reflected in responses to AI artist information. Rather, the information that images are AI-generated increases the perceived objectivity of some of the images. Furthermore, AI artist information causes moral outrage when the AI-generated images show older people. In sum, the information that creative content has been generated by an AI, and not created by a human, can impact responses to these works. However, these effects can be influenced by the genre or the specific content. The reactions to AI artist or author information do not always have to reflect actual tendencies but depend on perceptions of AI.Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) kann inzwischen zur Erstellung vieler kreativer Inhalte, wie Bildern, Geschichten, Musik oder Gedichten genutzt werden.

Fundamental insights into complex quantum phases of many-body systems can be obtained by the investigation of the underlying particle interactions. The variety of competing interactions between particles involved determines their behaviour in these quantum phases. In strongly correlated electron systems the involved particles are the localized 4f-electrons and the itinerant 5d-electrons. Their interactions can lead to the fascinating intermediate valence phase of non-integer f-occupation. In TmSe(1-x)Te(x) this phase can be induced by a semiconductor-metal transition whose volume change already indicates a drastic change in electron interaction. This phase transition makes TmSe(1-x)Te(x) suitable to investigate the evolution of the electron interactions. The major issue is the unavailability of TmSe(1-x)Te(x) crystals within the phase transition due to a miscibility gap just located around the point of transition. In order to close this gap and realize TmSe(1-x)Te(x) compounds throughout the whole semiconductor-metal transition, the epitaxial growth of TmSe(1-x)Te(x) by molecular-beam epitaxy is chosen. The advantage of this system is the unique possibility to study the evolution of the electron interactions by photoemission spectroscopy since the whole phase transition and thus the emergence of intermediate valence appears under ambient conditions. Systematic investigations on this phase transition in epitaxial TmSe(1-x)Te(x) have not yet been realised by photoemission spectroscopy which is therefore the task of this work. For this purpose, a high quality epitaxial growth of TmSe(1-x)Te(x) is achieved on SrF2 (111) which in addition opens a spectroscopic access so far unavailable by bulk single crystal cleavage. Two strategies to obtain TmSe(1-x)Te(x) phases throughout the phase transition are investigated. Tuning the lattice parameters of TmTe by substrate-induced strain turns out to be not enough to reach the phase transition. A direct growth of thin TmSe(1-x)Te(x) films varying in x enables the investigation of the overall electronic structure across the phase transition although the miscibility gap is not closed by epitaxy. This includes the first ever observed bandstructure of TmTe and TmSe in the (111) orientation. In the metallic phase of the transition a constant f-occupation is observed while in the semiconducting phase the f-occupation seems to decrease towards the phase transition. Drastic variations in the electronic interactions are hereby displayed which are accompanied by the observed gap opening. The detected separation of the 4f-state in the intermediate valence phase at temperatures below 100K is unexpected by the underlying Anderson model. It shows the possibly necessary inclusion of other interactions among the electrons for the theoretical description of intermediate valence systems. With these results the basis for further investigations of electron interactions in the intermediate valence system TmSe(1-x)Te(x) is given. The goal to provide spectroscopic access by molecular-beam epitaxy to phases throughout the transition has not been ruled out.

Analysis of cellular NO-GC expression in the murine heart and lineage determination in angiotensin II-induced fibrosis

NO-sensitive guanylyl cyclase (NO-GC) is involved in the (patho)physiology of the mammalian heart. However, little is known about the individual cardiac cell types that express NO-GC and the role of the enzyme in cardiac fibrosis. Here, we describe the cellular expression of NO-GC in healthy and fibrotic murine myocardium; these data were compared with scRNA-seq data. In healthy myocardium, NO-GC is strongly expressed in pericytes and smooth muscle cells but not in endothelial cells or cardiomyocytes. Angiotensin II induced cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis; fibrotic lesions contained cells positive for NO-GC identified as activated fibroblasts. Lineage tracing indicates that NO-GC-expressing activated fibroblasts originate from PDGFRβ- and Tcf21-positive fibroblast precursors. Our data indicate NO-GC expression in cardiac pericytes and SMC in naive myocardium and in activated fibroblast in fibrotic heart tissue. NO-mediated signaling may modulate fibrotic responses underlying the action of NO-GC stimulators used in the therapy of heart failure

One of the most important achievements in theoretical physics in the last decades has been the development of the holographic principle. The important achievement of this principle is to illustrate that physical models have the potential to describe both quantum physics and gravity at the same time. In particular, the holographic principle states that a gravitational theory defined in a region of spacetime is equivalently described by a quantum field theory on the boundary of this region. Since the quantum theory is defined on the boundary of the gravitational theory, we study the correspondence of these theories by examining the boundary behavior of gravitational fields. We interpret gravity as an effect emergent of the geometry of spacetime. This geometry is usually characterized solely by curvature, and holography is routinely applied in this case to examine the boundary field theory. The essential new aspect of this thesis is that I consider holography based on geometries which feature non-trivial torsion and non-metricity. These field strengths characterize geometry similar to curvature. Motivated by holography, I focus in particular on the gravitational boundary behavior of geometries described by curvature, torsion and non-metricity. \] If spacetime has a boundary, we generically need to introduce a Gibbons-Hawking-York (GHY) boundary term to render the variational principle well-defined. The first main result of this thesis is a universal GHY term that makes the Dirichlet problem well-defined in spacetimes which are allowed to have non-trivial curvature, torsion and non-metricity. I derive this universal GHY term for space-, time- and lightlike boundaries. As an important corollary, I observe that no GHY term is needed for actions which only depend on torsion and non-metricity. The method I develop allows to calculate GHY terms very efficiently compared to traditional approaches, even when considering theories with vanishing torsion and non-metricity. This enables us to calculate GHY terms for theories for which it was previously highly involved. Furthermore, the universality of my method allows to generalize existing results to spacetimes with non-vanishing torsion and non-metricity as well as to arbitrary dimensions. I illustrate this calculation for general relativity (GR), four-dimensional Chern-Simons modified gravity and Lovelock gravity. All of these examples correctly reproduce existing results for GHY terms in spacetimes with space- or timelike boundaries if torsion and non-metricity are constrained to vanish. I generalize these results to include torsion and non-metricity as well as lightlike boundaries. In the latter case only little is known about GHY terms. My method provides the first consistent approach that allows to technically handle the involved derivation of lightlike GHY terms. \[ By means of the methods I have introduced for deriving the universal GHY term, I examine the boundary behavior of the geometrical trinity of general relativity. This trinity consists of three theories that equivalently describe the dynamics of GR by either curvature, torsion or non-metricity. The bulk actions of these theories differ by a boundary term SD˚AS^{\mathring{D} A}. I generalize the geometrical trinity of general relativity to spacetimes with boundaries by including appropriate GHY terms. Careful analytic manipulation reveals that SD˚AS^{\mathring{D} A} is a difference of GHY terms. I show that its role is to render the variational principle correct for each way of expressing the bulk action. Since GHY terms are needed only for actions which depend on curvature, we conclude that the GHY term reminiscent of SD˚AS^{\mathring{D} A} must be eliminated in the curvature-free theories involved in the geometrical trinity. This provides the full equivalence of the actions in the geometrical trinity of general relativity in spacetimes with boundary and shows that the torsionful and non-metric sides do not require additional boundary terms. \] I develop a new perspective on the geometrical trinity of general relativity by proving that all of its theories may be described by the Einstein action. I supplement the Einstein action by a boundary term which makes it covariant. The Einstein action is constructed using the Levi-Civita connection \(\mathring{\omega}^\mu_{~\,\nu}\) which is the connection of a theory with vanishing torsion and non-metricity. I show that \(\mathring{\omega}^\mu_{~\,\nu}\) may equally well be interpreted as a connection which has non-trivial torsion and non-metricity. From this point of view, the equivalence of the theories contained in the geometrical trinity of gravity becomes tautological as all of them are described by the exact same action. I show that the trinity of GR may be generalized to a geometrical trinity of gravity by realizing that every torsion-free, metric-compatible theory of gravity may be described equivalently in terms of torsion and non-metricity. I render the variational problem of these equivalent actions well-defined by discussing their GHY terms. \[ I obtain essential new results by applying the method of holographic renormalization to the torsionful equivalent of GR. This involves the construction of a Fefferman-Graham expansion for coframes in the vicinity of the boundary of spacetimes with negative cosmological constant. This coframe expansion reproduces the expansion of the metric tensor underlying the Fefferman-Graham theorem. It allows to apply holographic renormalization to the torsionful equivalent of the Schwarzschild black hole. I explicitly construct the counterterms which are needed to make its on-shell action finite. Furthermore, I prove that torsion holds thermodynamical information by calculating the free energy of the boundary field theory. This is the foundation of an encompassing understanding of holographic renormalization of gravitational theories defined on geometries with curvature, torsion and non-metricity.

Impact of polymorphic microfibers for establishment of neuronal model

The biological and mechanical environment of cells is better mimicked in 3D compared to 2D cell cultures. However, creating accurate 3D cell culture models particularly for ultra-soft tissues like brain or spinal cord is challenging since the hydrogels that match these properties are mechanically fragile. Therefore, implementing reinforcing structures, such as microfibers, is essential to provide the necessary support. Particularly, fibrous systems are of interest since they offer natural fibrillar structures similar to the extracellular matrix. This study focuses on exploring the interactions between a motor neuron-like cell line and multiple microfiber-morphologies and mechanics. Monitoring cell-microfiber interactions over time we unveiled various dynamic undetected behaviors and interactions happening upon contact depending on the used microfiber properties. These highly defined microfiber fragments were fabricated using multiple processes—electrospinning, Melt Electrowriting, and microfluidic spinning—with properties differing in size, mechanics, and surface chemistry. The excellent control over our microfiber systems enabled the investigation of single parameters in an isolated manner. In addition, we quantified the observed varying movement modes of the monitored cell-microfiber tandems. The study demonstrates the significance of microfiber design for biological applications and establishes methodological foundations for the implementation of customized microfiber systems in the field of biofabrication

Introduction: Schizophrenia imposes a significant burden on global public health and is associated with pervasive stigmatization, perpetuating misconceptions of danger and incompetence. This review examines the efficacy of simulation interventions in reducing stigmas associated with schizophrenia and fostering empathy towards affected individuals. Methods: A comprehensive literature review spanning from August 2021 to September 2022 identified 14 relevant studies meeting inclusion criteria. Results: Analysis revealed a diverse landscape of simulation-based interventions, characterized by variability in methodological rigor, intervention design, and technological modalities. While some studies demonstrated promising outcomes in stigma reduction and empathy enhancement, methodological limitations and inconsistencies underscore the need for cautious interpretation of findings. Furthermore, mixed outcomes in stigma characteristics and empathy development highlight the complexity of intervention effectiveness. Discussion: Despite these challenges, simulation interventions, particularly when integrated with additional components, hold potential in mitigating stigmatization and promoting empathy. Future research should prioritize methodological rigor, comprehensive outcome assessment, and tailored intervention strategies to advance the field of stigma reduction in schizophrenia

Comparing virtual reality–based and traditional physical objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) stations for clinical competency assessments: randomized controlled trial

Background Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) are a widely recognized and accepted method to assess clinical competencies but are often resource-intensive. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR)–based station (VRS) compared with a traditional physical station (PHS) in an already established curricular OSCE. Methods Fifth-year medical students participated in an OSCE consisting of 10 stations. One of the stations, emergency medicine, was offered in 2 modalities: VRS and PHS. Students were randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 modalities. We used 2 distinct scenarios to prevent content leakage among participants. Student performance and item characteristics were analyzed, comparing the VRS with PHS as well as with 5 other case-based stations. Student perceptions of the VRS were collected through a quantitative and qualitative postexamination online survey, which included a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (minimum) to 5 (maximum), to evaluate the acceptance and usability of the VR system. Organizational and technical feasibility as well as cost-effectiveness were also evaluated. Results Following randomization and exclusions of invalid data sets, 57 and 66 participants were assessed for the VRS and PHS, respectively. The feasibility evaluation demonstrated smooth implementation of both VR scenarios (septic and anaphylactic shock) with 93% (53/57) of students using the VR technology without issues. The difficulty levels of the VRS scenarios (septic shock: P=.67; anaphylactic shock: P=.58) were comparable to the average difficulty of all stations (P=.68) and fell within the reference range (0.4-0.8). In contrast, VRS demonstrated above-average values for item discrimination (septic shock: r'=0.40; anaphylactic shock: r'=0.33; overall r'=0.30; with values 0.3 considered good) and discrimination index (septic shock: D=0.25; anaphylactic shock: D=0.26; overall D=0.16, with 0.2-0.3 considered mediocre and <0.2 considered poor). Apart from some hesitancy toward its broader application in future practical assessments (mean 3.07, SD 1.37 for VRS vs mean 3.65, SD 1.18 for PHS; P=.03), there were no other differences in perceptions between VRS and PHS. Thematic analysis highlighted the realistic portrayal of medical emergencies and fair assessment conditions provided by the VRS. Regarding cost-effectiveness, initial development of the VRS can be offset by long-term savings in recurring expenses like standardized patients and consumables. Conclusions Integration of the VRS into the current OSCE framework proved feasible both technically and organizationally, even within the strict constraints of short examination phases and schedules. The VRS was accepted and positively received by students across various levels of technological proficiency, including those with no prior VR experience. Notably, the VRS demonstrated comparable or even superior item characteristics, particularly in terms of discrimination power. Although challenges remain, such as technical reliability and some acceptance concerns, VR remains promising in applications of clinical competence assessment
