Establishing a Hydroponic Protocol for Cultivation of Theobroma cacao L. : Observations from a Greenhouse Experiment (Poster)

    No full text
Climate change increasingly disrupts cocoa cultivation in tropical regions, particularly through erratic rainfall and rising temperatures. Innovative approaches to sustainable production are urgently needed. Hydroponic systems, with their ability to precisely manage water and nutrient inputs, could offer promising additions to conventional soil-based cultivation methods, especially under stress-prone conditions. They also serve as effective platforms for experimental research on plant physiology in controlled environments. This study explored the establishment of a hydroponic protocol for Theobroma cacao L. under greenhouse conditions in Germany. A recirculating drip-irrigation system with automated water and nutrient supply was developed and optimized. Young cocoa plants (seedlings) successfully adapted to the hydroponic environment, showing continuous vegetative and generative growth, including flowering and initial fruit set, within less than one year. These findings contribute to refining hydroponic methods for perennial tropical crops and offer a reproducible framework for future research on climate-resilient cocoa cultivation systems. The developed protocol can serve as a reference for applying hydroponic principles to tropical open-field settings. Furthermore, it facilitates more precise studies of physiological stress on plant development - such as temperature fluctuations or pruning - and provides insights into the timing and intensity of flowering and fruit development under Controlled Environment Agriculture conditions

Quantitative evaluation of environmental impacts and mitigation measures for transport logistics companies— Insights through modeling of an exemplary site

    No full text
Most research on logistics mitigation measures has focused on external approaches like green fuels and emissions trading. This paper presents a study of measures that logistics companies can implement. It proposes an exemplary transport facility where scenarios for reducing environmental impacts are quantified within an annual environmental impact balance. The inventory of the exemplary site is aggregated to the supply of electricity, heat and truck fuel. The baseline scenario employs diesel, natural gas and the average German electricity mix. The diesel truck operation is responsible for over 90 % of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the baseline scenario. GHG mitigation measures at the facility level are applied to estimate how their introduction changes the environmental impact of logistics operations. Given the considerable divergence in the core processes and activities of logistics facilities, the informative value of a generic balance with average values is insufficient. This paper presents a methodology for creating a transferable model with freely selectable parameters. It also discusses deriving unknown consumption values from average data to obtain all necessary information for modeling. The balance model, created using Umberto®11, contains EcoInvent data as well as specific data sets. Both site-related parameter variations and changes in the truck fleet can be examined for their influence on the annual impact balance. The focus is on the energy supply and a variation of the drive technologies, while further reduction measures can be integrated. The carbon footprint can be reduced to climate-positive with the most effective measure being a fuel switch to bio-LNG. The most far-reaching measure in the stationary part of the logistics operation is "green" electricity

Influence of hydroponic cultivation subsystems on vegetative growth, vigour, and metabolite profiles in vanilla

    Get PDF
Vanilla, a high-value crop, faces numerous cultivation challenges, with global demand far outpacing supply. The absence of standardized cultivation practices underscores the need for innovative solutions. This study explores the vegetative growth and metabolite changes in Vanilla planifolia under controlled environment conditions in a recirculating hydroponic system. This system integrates four different subsystems: Nutrient Film Technique, Deep Flow Technique, Aeroponics, and Fogponics. Over an 81‑day period, all subsystems supported biomass production, though they differed in growth performance and metabolite profiles. The Deep Flow Technique achieved the highest fresh mass gain (27.65 g), while Fogponics yielded less than half as much (12.77 g). However, no single subsystem proved clearly superior; rather, each had distinct effects on plant development and metabolism. These findings provide valuable insights into substrate-free hydroponic systems tailored to Vanilla planifolia and support the advancement of innovative cultivation methods to enhance and stabilize vanilla production

On-Farm Application of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for the Determination of Nutrients in Liquid Organic Manures : Challenges and Opportunities

    No full text
Nutrient levels in liquid organic manures (LOM) vary greatly, so it is important to determine the concentrations before field application in order to ensure that fertilisation is tailored to the crop requirements. Precise knowledge of the nutrient content in LOMs is a basic prerequisite for the optimum supply of these nutrients to crops and for avoiding environmental problems caused by over-fertilisation. The constituents of LOMs can be determined on site using various methods. One possibility is near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). This method is already a common procedure for use in the laboratory. This review deals with the suitability of the use of NIRS for the characterisation of LOMs on farm. For on-farm applications, there are many factors such as the ambient temperature or movements and vibrations of the machines which can influence the measurement with the sensors and thus also the measured values. The influencing factors should therefore be taken into account. The reliability of NIRS systems for the on-farm analysis of liquid manure is verified by the German Agricultural Society. For the tests, various LOMs from different farms are measured with NIRS sensors and the quality of the agreement of the NIRS data with laboratory tests is certified for the respective ingredients for each LOM type. In order to exploit the full potential of the NIRS technology in the future, the indispensable calibrations need to be expanded and improved so that the sensors deliver precise and reproducible results for the different LOM types in practical applications
