    Get PDF
This paper is library research attempting to explore the way to maintain the local identity in globalization for Indonesian particularly their national religious identity. Taking and tracking documents in the form of data relating to the issues of globalization, religious identity, and  Pancasila and adopting the concept of grounded globalism by James L. Peacock which affirms and seeks embodied connectedness to locale, this paper shares the perspective that Pancasila is still qualified and deserve to be used as a basic foundation to maintain and strengthen the national religious identity of the Indonesian people in the global era. Indonesia does not need to be transformed by global identity. Indonesia has already had its own national religious identity which is global. The five principles of Pancasila need to be actualized as the ground and cultural traits of their global identity. By grounding global identity on Pancasila, Indonesians can enjoy globalization without losing its national identity

    Get PDF
Considering the important role of Individual Differences (IDs) factors in variations in the ultimate success of learners learning second language (L2, this study investigated Indonesian college students’ two ID components, self-perceived communication competence (SPCC) and their communication apprehension (CA), in English as L2. Several rationales become the basis of the present study. Despite the importance of learners’ SPCC in L2 learning as suggested by several empirical studies outside Indonesia, there have not been any specific study investigating learners’ SPCC in the Indonesian context despite the country being the home of one of the largest number of L2 speakers of English in the world. As a seminal study in the context, the study using quantitative methods enables generalisation which could pave a way for further studies in the field in the Indonesian context. A total of 276 non-English major college students participated in the study in a survey using probability random sampling. Using descriptive statistics in SPSS 21, the study found that learners had medium level of SPCC and medium level of CA. Through correlation formula, the study also found that there was moderate significant association between learners’ SPCC and their CA. Through regression analysis, it was found that their SPCC could predict 23% of variance in their CA. The findings urge teachers to provide as many learning opportunities as possible in enjoyable learning environment to increase learners’ perception of their capability, in turn boosting their confidence to speak in English. Based on the findings and several limitations of the study, several suggestions of future studies are presented

Imposition, adoption, and resistance in Lynne Kutsukake’s The Translation of Love: A postcolonial approach

    Get PDF
This paper, which is under Transnational American Studies and Postcolonial Studies, aims to analyze a process of creating a colonial culture which involves cultural imposition, adoption, and resistance in Lynne Kutsukake’s The Translation of Love. This novel depicts postwar Japanese society that lives under American power after the end of World War II while undergo kyodatsu (the period of an economic, social and moral crisis caused by the war). This paper is a qualitative research that utilizes three theories, including cultural imposition, mimicry and symbolic resistance. The finding, shows the devaluation of Japanese cultural identity which used to oppose the claim of “otherness†by the West. In cultural imposition, the United States manages to impose American ideology, language, lifestyle, customs and fashion through various ways such as media, social interaction, social obligation and school curriculum. Meanwhile, in cultural adoption, postwar Japanese adopt American cultures in which it asserts that there is a shift of postwar Japanese cultural orientation that tends to celebrate American culture as a “sign of liberationâ€. Then, in symbolic resistance, postwar Japanese resistance toward the United States as the occupying power is only manifested in subversive everyday gestures which include covert and overt form. In short, this analysis shows that, during U.S. occupation, postwar Japan only becomes “a pawn†in the United States’ postwar plan for global dominance by rebuilding a new Japanese society under American influence

External evaluation in Roald Dahl’s The BFG

    Get PDF
There have been several significant changes in children’s literature in the past few decades; one of them is the change in the narative style. Roald Dahl is one of the most prominent authors of children’s literature that displays this particular change in his works. Dahl is known to utilize a creative narrative style in his works, and this is also seen in one of his children’s novels discussed in this research: The BFG (1982). This research thus aims at analysing one part of the narrative structure called external evaluation which shows the function of narrator in the story as well as the effects of the use of such narrative style on children as the target readers. Using Labov’s theory of narative structure and Genette’s theory of narratology, the results of the analysis shows that Dahl utilizes the function of narrator in the external evaluations to help children as his target readers to get a better understanding of the story as well as to build a close connection with them, resulting in the more enjoyable reading experience for the children

    Get PDF
Many factors are required in order to increase the skills of English of higher education students, specifically computer science students. Of the factors, teachers play a very important role since they are the agents of change in the classrooms; not to neglect that the students are also the agents of their own changes. Using Brown’s 12 pedagogical characteristics of a good language teacher as its theory, this is a report of the first step of design-based research, practical problems encountered by teachers of English to computer science students conducted at two private universities in Indonesia. Among the 12 characteristics, knowledge of approaches to language teaching seems to be the biggest challenge that came upon the teachers. The findings of this step will subsequently be used as the bases to go further to the second cycle of design-based research, which is the development of solutions informed by existing design principles and technological innovations

    Get PDF
This study investigated the interference of Bahasa Indonesia passive voice norm on English sentence. There are many studies that investigated the interference of native language on the learning of target language. Most of the studies talked about interference in the level of lexical, grammatical, phonetic, syntactical, and many more. However, the study about interference of a norm have never been discussed before. Thus, it is important to conduct this study to give some prove that norm of languages may interfere language learning. This study involved 50 students of Tour and Travel Business Department at Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata (STP) AMPTA Yogyakarta. The data was collected by giving students 3 sentences in Bahasa Indonesia and they had to write them in English. The sentences that the students had produced were compared to the correct one. The finding shows that most of the students’ sentences were interfered by the norm of passive voice in Bahasa Indonesia. It is due to the lack of students’ understanding toward the concept of passive voice norms in both of Bahasa Indonesia and English. Thus, the teacher must give clear explanation about the norm of passive voice in both of languages

This paper is an alternative way to teach them as a significant element of pronunciation. The types examined are Regular Past Tense, Regular Plural Number, Third Person Present, The Regular Possessive, and Reduced IS and HAS. Besides the main highlight of allomorph pronunciation, the movie also contemplates some suprasegmental features called word stress and sentence intonation. The teachers may also utilize the movie through four phases. They are warm-up activity, completion, categorization, and production. Bringing a movie that has many benefits into EFL classrooms may lead to a good comprehension of English allomorphs to the students

    Get PDF
This research aims at finding out whether or not the use of extensive reading is effective for teaching writing explanation text to the eleventh grade at Islamic University in Semarang. Quasi experimental research was applied as the method. The researchers took two groups as the sample, they were XI MIPA 6 as the experimental class and XI MIPA 2 as the control class. The total subject of this research was 65. This research used SPSS in analysing the data of writing test through several activities. They were pre-test before treatments, and post-test after treatments. The result of the research shows the significance difference in the writing ability of explanation text between eleventh-graders who were taught by using extensive reading and those were not taught by using it. It can be seen in the result of mean score in the post-test of experimental class which is 64.4118 and control class which is 48.5484 and as a result Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00 < 0.05. Therefore, the null hyothesis of this research is rejected. It means that the use of extensive reading had significantly improved the eleventh-graders’ writing ability of the explanation text in English teaching and learning process of the experimental class at Islamic School in Semarang in the academic year 2018/2019
