    Get PDF
Colonialism continuously brings about the complexity of excess either to the colonizing country or the colonized country. This essay discusses the post-colonialism effect on African society reflected in Sembene Ousmane’s A Black Skinned Girl. It tells an African black skinned-girl with her obsession to be a successful housemaid in France, yet living a life in misery and sorrows she has passed through every day as a result of her mistress’s colonial conduct. The European white-skinned woman does such a cruel treatment to the African black skinned-girl since she thinks that she has a very dissenting cultural and racial identity. Anti-colonial resistance done by the African black skinned-girl really means nothing, not changing the heart-breaking fate but her death. Not merely oppression, but also African natural resource richness that her white-skinned master and mistress have already exploited

This paper as a result of a research describing the way the young learners negotiate meanings through their choices of speech functions and the realization of those speech functions through the choices of mood after they are being treated at school. The corpus of the data of this research is a stretch of approximately sixty-minutes dialogue between 5 primary school children and their teacher; the speech functions are categorized based on the Speech Function Network developed by Eggins and Slade (1997). It is found that children learning English as a foreign language can perform similar speech functions as adult in their spoken interaction. Responding to questions is an important skill to develop. Sometimes students cannot give suitable responses to some specific questions. In order to be able to give suitable response to a question students have to understand what a given question expects. Failing to anticipate what the question asks will lead the students to give unsuitable response. Giving feedback to the students in anticipating what a question asks is believed to be able to improve their abilities to respond to the questions appropriately.I conducted classroom research on the teacher's feedback to improve the students' question-response skill in my listening class in EFL setting. Sixty-nine participants were the fourth-semester students taking Listening IV in 2005. They were asked to listen to and answer the recorded oral questions taken from a standardized model test. The test results were evaluated and the researcher gave feedback to the students by giving the key and discussing the case specific to each question item. After giving teacher’s feedback, the participants were asked to listen and respond to a number of questions and the result, again, were evaluated. This cycles were iterated for 3 times. The teacher's feedback comprises sound recognition, guessing the word's or phrase's  meaning, and grammar. The research findings showed significant improvement on the students' question-response skill indicated by the increased mean score especially after implementing the third cycle
