Improving the Quality of Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Education in Modern Universities: A Discourse

    Get PDF
A teacher plays a vital role in improving the quality of social, cultural and humanitarian (SCH) education. He/she channels and corrects students when they take steps towards a specific goal, delivers knowledge, manages the learning process, and shapes behavioural patterns. This research aims to contribute to the improvement of SCH education quality in modern universities. The study was carried out with the participation of 790 students from 7 universities: Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (Moscow), the Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys, the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, the Voronezh State University, and the North-Eastern Federal University (Yakutsk). The survey reveals uncongenial findings: 30% of the respondents are satisfied with the quality of SCH education in their university, 67% are unsatisfied, and 3% are not sure. The findings allow teachers of humanities and social studies to apply the mechanism described in this study in educational contexts. This research tackles the Elabuga model of education quality improvement in the context of various universities and institutes. The research shows that the Elabuga teaching model has improved the quality of students majoring in humanities and social studies and led to a qualitative and frequent use of innovative methods. Thus, from the US and Russian experience in socio-cultural and humanitarian education, it is evident that Humanities and Social Studies will be more in line with Science and Engineering in years to come

P.B. Shelley\u27s Poem Ozymandias in Russian Translations

    No full text
The article presents a comparative analysis of Russian translations of P.B.Shelley\u27s poem Ozymandias (1817), carried out by Ch. Vetrinsky, A.P. Barykova, K.D. Balmont, N. Minsky, V.Ya. Bryusov in 1890 - 1916. These translations fully reflect the peculiarities of the social and political, cultural and literary life in Russia of the late 19th - early 20th Centuries, namely weakening of the political system, growing of interest to the culture of Ancient Egypt, and strengthening of Neoromanticism in opposition to Naturalism in literature. In the process of the analysis, we used H. Smith\u27s sonnet Ozymandias, P.B. Shelley\u27s sonnet Ozymandias and its five Russian translations. The methods of historical poetics of A.N. Veselovsky, V.M. Zhirmunsky and provisions of the linguistic theory of translation of A.V. Fedorov were used. The article will be interesting for those studying literature, languages, philology

Translating the Untranslatable: Challenges, Sticking Points and Struggles

    Get PDF
The existence of any nation depends on worldwide communication. In the era of globalisation, translation practices have become even more essential. In the context of communication, cultural translation has always been necessary but little is known as to how untranslatable can be made translatable. From this perspective, this research is a timely addition to the science of translation. Translation demand increases from year to year and so is demand for a general review of papers regarding the role and place of untranslatables in translation. This research aims to present a comparative analysis of Kazakhstani writings and their Russian and English translations. Results show that transliteration is the primary way to translate general ethnographic realia into Russian. The second translation method that is often used is the equivalent translation (using words with meanings that are similar to the meanings of the original words). Additionally, translators may create a calque or new words and phrases. Results obtained can be useful when searching for the most suitable translation options

Role of Sensual Image in Scientific Generalisation

    Get PDF
The method of generalisation widely used in scientific research is a variant of the similar logical method. Generalisation in different scientific areas has its own specifics, but in fundamental knowledge, it allows to create general concepts. We explore generalisation in scientific knowledge, focusing on the peculiarities of the formation of general concepts and the role of sensory image in their functioning in scientific theory and the retranslation of scientific knowledge. Scientific, philosophical, religious, literary texts were studied and compared to determine the essence and characteristic features of the generalisation method. Subsequently, the information extracted from these texts was systematised using the methods of similarity and difference. The resulting material based on analogy served as the basis for the conclusion.  The method of concomitant variations turned out to be necessary for establishing the dependence of scientific results on changes in research conditions, which was done on the example of the evolution of generalising images in the field of atomic physics. During generalisation, it is necessary to search for a successful image of a general concept, which is important for understanding its meaning. The image obtained as a result of generalisation of scientific knowledge is an essential semantic unit of a scientific retranslation. General concepts contain generalised images of classes of objects and thus configure the scientific picture of the world. They perform not only a representative but a communicative function in the process of reproducing of scientific knowledge both within science and in society. While scientific knowledge becomes more and more abstract, a sensual image makes it possible to detect relationships that are not accessible to a rational level of knowledge. It also facilitates the transferring of knowledge in learning

The Voices of Male Nurses in Kerala: Career Choice and Satisfaction

    Get PDF
There are more male nurses than ever before in India. While there is a large number of studies that focus on the differences in working conditions between male and female nurses and perceptions towards male nurses in western contexts, these studies are almost non-existent in highly patriarchal contexts like India. Utilising twenty semi-structured interviews with male nurses in three cities of Kerala, geospatially located in South India, this research aims at exploring the reasons why male nurses select the profession and their gendered experiences during their career paths. The research argues that male nurses select the profession for increasing their chances to migrate to industrialised countries like Australia and the United Kingdom. However, they face various social and work-related impediments in their career, which include negative perceptions of families and others towards the profession, the discrimination faced in terms of occupational segregation at the workplace, negative perceptions towards their manhood and the difficulties in finding a bride. Male nurses, if unsuccessful in migrating abroad, are not committed to remaining in the profession, particularly after their “shelf-lives” are over. In this case, they are highly likely to move to other professions or migrate to second-option countries in the Middle East. This emerges as a concern for India which is in dire need of nurses and highlights that Indian and State governments need to take prompt actions that would eliminate the stereotypes concerning male nurses, improve the working conditions and reduce discrimination towards male nurses, and in general to include more men in mainstream nursing

Sociocultural Aspects of Leadership: A Look at Gender Roles

    Get PDF
The research aims to examine specifically the gendered aspects of professional and management leadership and evaluate the prospects for overcoming gender inequality in the social sphere. The study involved 350 students comprising of 45% men and 55% women from three different universities of Kazan (Russia): Kazan Federal University, Kazan Federal Agricultural University, and Kazan State Medical University. To accomplish the research objectives, empirical data were gathered using the Bem Sex-Role Inventory and a Sex Typing on Leadership Survey composed by Cann and Siegfried (1990). The findings reveal that only 12% of students were raised in traditional patriarchal families, while the rest was raised in a multicultural environment. The gender-neutral type of leadership is dominant in student groups. This observation suggests a definite trend towards gender equality in management

Understanding Proximate Factors Associated With Perpetration of Intimate Partner Violence by Men In India

    Get PDF
At a time when there is a severe dearth of men centric versions of intimate partner violence and the perpetuation of the same by men shows anomalous surge around the world, it is essential to investigate the predictive factors of the same with its intricacies from perpetrators perspectives too. Understanding the factors instrumental in making perpetrators of violence, especially when violence on women is the demonstration of men\u27s failure to appreciate the inherent poise and parity of women, can enable us to have policy interventions to involve men as a part of solution in our efforts towards combating all forms of violence, resulted from aggressive masculinity with gender stereotypes, which sanctions use of violence as well as a sense of entitlement over women. This study attempts to encapsulate the links between IPV perpetration and perpetrators\u27 attitude towards gender equality, childhood gender inequity & violence experiences and explores the associations between education, age, occupation and income of perpetrators on IPV. A quantitative research design was followed in this study where 1600 men from four different districts, having different gender equality and development indices, within Gujarat, India were selected by proportionate random sampling. The results of this study vividly demonstrate the ubiquity of IPV, a petrifying crime pervasive around the world. It also underlines how strong and deeply rooted patriarchal attitudes internalised within men are intricately linked to their inclination towards IPV. Childhood gender inequity, as well as violence experiences of men, is also emerged as a set of proximate factors found to be significantly correlated with their propensity to be violent towards women. This study immensely contributes towards policy recommendations which will help generations to disapprove of violence on women and grow up with gender equity attitudes. &nbsp
