Identity and Body in Emerging Adults With Congenital Heart Disease: A Qualitative Exploration
AIM: To explore the identity and body experiences of emerging adults with congenital heart disease. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive study. METHODS: Narratives from 152 emerging adults about living with congenital heart disease and its impact on their identity and body experiences were analysed using template analysis. An inductive and deductive approach was combined, and the frameworks of illness identity and experience of embodiment were used as a starting point. RESULTS: The template analysis generated two primary themes: (1) identity and (2) body, each containing several subthemes. For identity, the subthemes were (1.1) illness identity and (1.2) acknowledgement. For body, the subthemes were (2.1) the dimensions of embodiment and (2.2) the process of embodiment. In addition, the related themes (3) self in light of the other and (4) lack of impact were included. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the unique challenges emerging adults with congenital heart disease can encounter regarding their identity and body experiences. IMPLICATIONS FOR PATIENT CARE: Patient care would benefit from adopting a more holistic and person-centred approach that fosters positive identity and body experiences in emerging adults with congenital heart disease. IMPACT: This study deepens our understanding of how congenital heart disease affects identity and body experiences in emerging adults. Recognising these aspects as crucial to psychological care can facilitate patients in sharing identity and body-related challenges and receiving tailored support. Teleiôsis and Kenôsis. Een exegetische en vergelijkende studie van 'kenosis en exaltatie' in Phil 2:5-11 en Phil 3:12-16
Philippians 2:5-11 is often seen as a 'Christological hymn' while Phil 3:12-16 is typically categorised as a 'Pauline ethical exhortation.' However, this dissertation highlights how Phil 2:5-11 also carries ethical and paradigmatic importance and how Phil 3:12-16 holds Christological and eschatological significance. The study compares the concepts of teleiôsis and kenôsis, focusing on how Paul imitates the model of Christ in his pursuit of perfection. Moreover, the project elucidates how Paul employs athletic imagery, both in its downward and upward trajectory, to visually represent his journey toward perfection, modelled on Christ. The downward movement of Paul, as illustrated by his disclaimer of τετελείωμαι and the backward movement in the athletic imagery, correspond to the kenotic movements of Christ in 2:6-8. In contrast, the upward movement, namely his claim of being among the τέλειοι in 3:15 and his striving as an athlete to win the prize, follows the exaltation of Christ in 2:9-11.
The Pauline concept of teleiôsis which is interpreted as perfection in Phil 3:12-16 is articulated by means of athletic imagery and the φρονεῖν of Christ exhibited through the actions of kenôsis in Phil 2:5-11. Paul acknowledges the inevitability of Christ's model of kenôsis in his own pursuit of perfection, which is presented as a fundamental objective of life. While teleiôsis refers to Paul's disclaimer of τετελείωμαι in 3:12 and his identification of being among the τέλειοι in 3:15, kenôsis refers to Christ's actions to identify with humanity, particularly through the verb form ἐκένωσεν in Phil. 2:7. Just as Christ's kenôsis leads to exaltation, Paul's downward movements by means of the imitation of Christ's kenôsis become a catalyst for the teleiôsis represented by the upward movements. In this context, imitating the kenôsis of Christ is presented as a prerequisite for attaining the most desirable state of teleiôsis. Thus, although teleiôsis and kenôsis seem antithetical to each other in their literal meanings, the implication of these terms in the life of Paul suggests a paradoxical progression from kenôsis to teleiôsis.
This project represents the first attempt to explore Paul's idea of perfection by comparing the concepts of teleiôsis and kenôsis. In Philippians 3, Paul aligns the narration of his life and his pursuit of perfection with the story of Christ. On the one hand, Christ is the forerunner and guarantor of perfection, and on the other hand, he is the source and object of Paul's pursuit of perfection. Perfection is an 'already and not yet' reality, which is attainable in this life in a relative sense, provided that one adheres to the mind of Paul as outlined in the model of Christ. In this sense, perfection is understood as a process of conforming to Christ. Paul's athletic imagery shows that perfection is not a fixed state but a dynamic, ongoing journey of growth, rooted in the mind of Christ. In short, Paul's exhortation on perfection in Phil 3:12-16 can be seen as his personal reenactment of the Christ story described in Phil 2:5-11.status: Publishe
Gemetastaseerde borstkanker: heterogeniteit van de tumor, zijn microomgeving en behandelingsdoelen
This doctoral thesis intends to evaluate, comprehend and explore the field of heterogeneity within the tumour microenvironment of human breast cancer metastases. Multi-omics data will be generated using samples collected in the context of the UPTIDER post-mortem tissue donation program at the KU/UZ Leuven. Using bioinformatic and biostatistical approaches, the project is expected to provide novel information of the intra-patient, inter-metastasis heterogeneity of the tumor microenvironment, as well as to generate organ-specific knowledge. Finally, the thesis intends to place a broader perspective on the field of breast cancer, facilitating a cohesive understanding of the tumour microenvironment, with the ultimate goal to refine the treatment of future patients with breast cancer.status: Publishe

Navigating the healthcare process is similar to piecing together an intricate puzzle, where every medical test is a crucial piece, and the completed image reflects a patient's comprehensive care pathway. With clinical laboratory data representing an estimated 70% of all healthcare data and influencing 70% of medical decisions, this work aims to exploit this data more effectively within a learning health system framework, enhancing patient care through the innovative application of artificial intelligence (AI) and data science.
The research identifies two main challenges in the utilization of clinical laboratory data in the intricate puzzle of healthcare. The first challenge involves the secondary use of laboratory data, including clinical research and the development of clinical machine learning (ML) models, which is often compromised by issues of data quality. The second challenge pertains to the primary clinical use of laboratory data, where the inappropriate selection and utilization of laboratory tests can hinder the delivery of optimal patient care, underscoring the difficulty of ensuring the right test for the right patient at the right time.
To address these challenges, the research proposes a two-pronged AI-driven approach. Firstly, by developing "lab2clean" novel algorithms designed to automate and standardize the data cleaning process, we aim to improve laboratory data quality for accurate research and effective clinical ML models. Secondly, we aim to research how AI can drive a "Clinical Laboratory Intelligent Test Engine (CLINTE)" that can support clinicians in making more informed decisions regarding laboratory test utilization, aiming to optimize patient care.
By integrating the disciplines of laboratory medicine with cutting-edge AI and data science techniques, this research seeks to refine the clarity and fit of each piece of clinical laboratory data, ensuring its meaningful contribution to the comprehensive healthcare puzzle and the overarching goal of a more adaptive and learning health system that supports personalized and evidence-based patient care.status: Publishe
