Assessment of smallholder rice farmers' adaptation strategies to climate change in Kebbi state, Nigeria

    No full text
The future of food production in Nigeria where smallholding agriculture is prevalent is threatened by climate change. Despite the threats, Nigeria has no specific plan or policy to combat it. Therefore, understanding how smallholder farmers adjust to the changing climate and the factors that influence their adaptation choices will facilitate developing a policy to tackle climate change. This study therefore evaluates climate change adaptation techniques among smallholder rice farmers in Kebbi state, Nigeria. The study employs a simple random sampling technique to select 345 respondents. The data was analysed using multivariate probit and ordered probit regression. The findings revealed that marital status, literacy, farm size, farming experience, major occupation, extension visits, amount of credit, and access to climate information influenced adaptation strategy choice. Furthermore, marital status, literacy, household size, farm size, extension visits, and access to climate information are crucial drivers of adoption intensity. This study concludes that smallholder rice farmers in the study area adopt several practices to cope with climate change, however, farmers’ intensity of adoption is low. This study recommends that stakeholders in the food systems in the study area should consider literacy, farm size, extension service, credits, and climate information in designing viable policies toward combating the vagaries of climate

    No full text
The development of human capital as a means of promoting economic progress in Nigeria is the main emphasis of this study. The investigation used time series data from 1981 to 2018. The data analysis method employed was ARDL Bound-Testing. It was discovered that the human capital development factors of education and health had favorable and statistical significance effects on economic growth. The study, therefore, recommended that to achieve a sustainable impetus for economic growth, a robust action plan focusing on the rejuvenation of the country’s educational and health sectors must be entrenched. In addition, the recommendation for an upward review of yearly budgetary provisions to these two

The Nuisances of Terrorism and Human Rights Violations in Nigeria

    No full text
Over a decade now, Nigeria has been battling a violent threat to its corporate peace and stability occasioned by the terrorist activities of the dreaded Islamic extremist group called Boko Haram, mainly domiciled in the North-Eastern region of the country. Since 2009, when Boko Haram began carrying out its campaign of terror on government establishments, including security apparatuses and schools, as well as local communities and individuals in the affected region up till now, Nigeria has witnessed a steady rise in the incidence of grave human rights abuses. Orchestrated both by Boko Haram and the personnel of government security agencies conducting counter-terrorism operations against the terrorist group, the spate of violations of the fundamental human rights of the citizens has become so worrisome as the trend questions the ability of the Nigerian State to fulfil one of its primary obligations of protecting its citizens from assaults and abuses. This study investigates the dimension of this phenomenon based on data derived from secondary sources, including journals articles, books, publications of the Nigerian National Human Rights Commission, publications of the United Nations and other related international bodies, newspaper reports, and websites. The data were analyzed through the thematic and descriptive-interpretive methods of qualitative data analysis. The study finds that the Boko Haram conflict has caused extreme human rights abuses in North-East Nigeria, including destruction of life and property, forced religious conversions and marriages, cruelty against children and utilization of children in combat, among others. The study recommends that the Nigerian government needs to strengthen the equipment capabilities of the security agencies fighting against Boko Haram and motivate them adequately to decimate the group completely as was done to its equivalent, Maitatsine, in the past, and investigate all credible cases of alleged human rights violations impartially to secure justice for the victims, among others. It concludes that proper application of these measures by relevant authorities in Nigeria would definitely provide the country a way out of the prevailing awful situation

Nigeria’s Foreign Policy and the Major Geographical Drivers

    No full text
The thinking in the literature is that states develop different foreign policy interests and priorities depending on their geographical endowments. That is, the foreign policy of a state is sensitive to its geography. This article examines the defining role that geographical descriptors have played in the conduct of Nigeria’s foreign policy. Relying on data generated from major ranking bodies/platforms and other secondary sources, this paper contends that geographical factors have always shaped Nigeria’s foreign policy towards the coterminous or contiguous countries, Gulf of Guinea, ECOWAS region, and African continent. While Nigeria has leveraged its size, location, natural and human endowments to launch itself into global relevance, there are major constraints. These include the ineffective governance of Nigeria’s land and borders and occasional border disputes with the adjoining states, poor demographics in terms of nutrition, health, education and work, and the mismanagement of the proceeds from the country’s natural resource endowments. These problems must be addressed if Nigeria is to harness the full benefits of its geography

Exploring the Drivers of Vulnerability Transitions to Climate Change among Arable Crop Farming Households in Nigeria.

    No full text
Climate change is a global threat to agriculture, especially in Nigeria, which includes rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, droughts, and extreme weather events. Nigeria, as a predominantly agrarian country, is dealing with complex climate change impacts that affect food, employment, and income. Using data from the General Household Survey Panel and a two-stage probability sampling method, this study investigates the vulnerability and transitions of 3,078 arable crop farm households across Nigeria. The study divides farm households into transition groups using descriptive statistics and used the Climate Vulnerability Index (CVI) to assess climate change vulnerability, revealing that more than half (56.76%) are chronically vulnerable to climate change. Access to extension services and irrigation equipment are two factors that influence vulnerability transitions. The study emphasized the dynamic nature of vulnerability, with households shifting from low to high vulnerability over time. Recommendations emphasize the importance of national initiatives to revitalize extension services, especially in the vulnerable northern region. Subsidies for irrigation equipment are seen as critical for increasing crop production in the face of population growth and climate change. It was suggested that crop farmers can engage in nonfarm activities to increase their financial resilience. The study highlights the northern region's pronounced vulnerability, which is influenced by education levels and household size. It proposes policy interventions to address these vulnerabilities, as well as insights into effective climate change mitigation strategies for Nigeria's arable crop farming sector. No full text
A 12-week experiment was conducted to assess the effects of replacing maize with graded levels of enhanced cassava stump (ECS) on the egg productivity and quality of chickens. Cassava leaves and stumps were fermented with the aid of Aspergillus niger (ATCC 16404) in solid state at room temperature (28.5 o C) for 96 and 192 hours, respectively. Thereafter the fermented cassava stump was fortified with 5% fermented cassava leaves to make ECS. Four layer diets were formulated by replacing maize with ECS at 0, 20, 40 and 60% levels. The result showed that the proximate values of the cassava stump were enhanced by fermentation with 195.63, 59.17 and 118.33% increment in crude protein, ether extract and ash respectively. The egg production and quality were influenced (P 0.05) in the control group and diet that contained 40% ECS. The cost of feed decreased as the ECS increased in the diets. The eggshell index improved as ECS level increased in the diets, while the highest Haugh unit (HU) was observed in the diet containing 60% ECS. It was concluded that though the replacement of maize up to 60% by ECS gave better egg quality and economic benefit but for optimum performance, 40% ECS is recommended
