    Flipped classrooms and their effect on Omani students’ vocabulary achievement and motivation towards learning English

    This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effect of the flipped classroom strategy (FCS) on Omani grade ten students’ vocabulary achievement and on their motivation towards learning English. This study also sought to explore the challenges that students face while learning via FCS. A total of 48 students participated in the study. There were 24 as an experimental group (taught via the FCS) and 24 as a control group (taught the same vocabulary using conventional teaching strategies). During the intervention, students in the experimental group practiced the core vocabulary using different materials (video clips, PDF files and group discussions via a WhatsApp group before carrying out face-to-face activities in the classroom). During the classroom time, the students engaged in activities with the practice materials individually, in pairs and in groups. The study used an achievement pre- and post-test. The study also used a motivation questionnaire (pre and post) to determine the students' motivation for English language learning for both groups. The findings indicated that the experimental group outperformed the control group in the vocabulary test and that they had high motivation towards learning English. In addition, the study also pointed out some of the challenges of learning via FCS such as connectivity issues, and lack of group cooperation. Considering these findings, practice implications and recommendations for further research are presented

    Students’ preferences and challenges in learning English fully online with Google Classroom

    The Coronavirus 2019 outbreak caused the world to experience a pandemic and paralyze human activities, including the education sector. Consequently, the teaching-learning system changed from face-to-face to online. This study aimed to determine how high school students' preferences and challenges in Pekanbaru city employing the Google Classroom to learn English. This descriptive study involved 30 high school and vocational high school students as the sample who obtained through purposive sample technique. Google Form and interviews with Zoom were employed to gather the data. This study found that Google Classroom was quite effective in helping students replace the learning process during a pandemic with an online learning system.

    Secondary mathematics teachers’ use of learners’ responses to foster justification skills

    This study aimed to understand how secondary mathematics teachers engage with learners during the teaching and learning process. A sample of six participants was purposively selected from a population of ordinary level mathematics teachers in one urban setting in Zimbabwe. Field notes from lesson observations and audio-taped teachers’ narrations from interviews constituted data for the study to which thematic analysis technique was then applied to determine levels of mathematical intimacy and integrity displayed by the teachers as they interacted with the students. The study revealed some inadequacies in the manner in which the teachers handled students’ responses as they strive to promote justification skills during problem solving, in particular teachers did not ask students to explain wrong answers. The teachers indicated that they did not have sufficient time to engage learners in authentic problem-solving activities since they would be rushing to complete syllabus for examination purposes. On the basis of these findings, we suggest teachers to appreciate the need to pay special attention to the kinds of responses given by learners during problem-solving in order to promote justification skills among learners

    The master of arts in applied linguistics graduates’ perceptions on the program and their competencies

    This study determined and analyzed the graduates’ evaluation of the master of arts in applied linguistics program on their perspectives on the contribution of the program to the present work demands, competencies in their work to further advance career and program enhancement. This study used the quantitative-qualitative research methods by using the modified self-administered questionnaires based on Schomburg primarily and interviews. The data revealed that the graduates perceived the relevance, appropriateness, and satisfaction of their program to their work. The graduates were also trained in terms of writing and presenting reports, critical thinking, managing their time and publishing. However, the program needed to enhance the skills in publication which could be attributed to the lack of internal motivation to publish one’s research output and availability of journals for publication. Thus, this study implies that there is a need to strengthen the research agenda of the department. It is indeed recommended that the students should be required by faculty members to submit their final papers for review and publication to a selected journal and publishing the master’s theses before and after earning the master of arts in applied linguistics (MAAL) program should be encouraged, reinforced, and practiced. A scholarly journal could also be created

    Character education trend in Indonesia

    Character education is an educational concept to form and foster a Muslim personality as a whole (syumuliyah). This literature study aimed to determine the implementation of character education and supporting and inhibiting factors for the implementation of character education in formal schools in Indonesia. Data analysis techniques by means of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Based on research findings, the trend of implementing character education in Indonesian formal schools has the same spirit in the content of character education. In formal schools with the status of public schools, the implementation of character education follows government regulations as stated in the Strengthening of Character Education (SCE), which is an implication of Islamic teachings. As for formal schools with private status on an Islamic basis, character education tends to be oriented towards cultivating akhlakul karimah (moral education) combined with government regulations. The implications of this research lead to the cultivation of character values that are embedded in social attitudes and spiritual attitudes as provisions for students' daily lives. The supporting and inhibiting factors for the implementation of character education are also discussed

    Development of primary school fourth-grade students’ fraction calculation strategies through the argumentation method

    One of the most fundamental subjects of primary school mathematics, the concept of fraction plays a key role in students' educational background. Students experience difficulties and misconceptions regarding this concept. Therefore, it is of great importance to understand this subject well and to use different teaching methods and techniques. Various methods can be used in learning mathematics, such as invention method, computer-assisted teaching, problem solving, creative drama and discussion. Argumentation method is a scientific discussion of a claim on a subject by providing data, warrant and backing, and by revealing the rebuttal and the invalidity of the claim. Students gain more skills by interacting with teachers or collaborating with their peers, and that they possess skills that have not been obtained before or that are too difficult to achieve on their own. Therefore, the argumentation method was chosen for its effect on the development of primary school students’ fraction calculation strategies. Having a case study design, this study was conducted with 28 primary school fourth-grade students and 10 open-ended questions prepared by the researchers were used during interviews. The results suggested that primary school students were able to develop fraction calculation strategies through the argumentation method. In general, inventing strategies, using representations, number sense, addition and subtraction, using unit fractions and proportional reasoning were used as fraction calculation strategies. It recommended to use the argumentation method in other critical subjects of mathematics as well

    A bibliometric analysis of collaboration skills in education (2019-2021)

    One indicator of 21st century skills is collaboration; essential skill students must acquire in century learning. This study aimed to reveal research trends over the last three years based on the start of COVID-19 by using content analysis and reviewing bibliometric results related to articles with collaboration keywords. For bibliometric mapping analysis, a total of 500 articles were accessed, and for content analysis, 31 articles were selected between 2019-2021 based on Google Scholar's database corresponding to the education field study of the research. The results showed that digital "health education collaboration" was the most searched keyword, while researchers focused on collaboration in education between 2019-2021. The most commonly used words in abstracts are teaching, creativity, ability, and community. It was evident that the latest articles primarily focused on skills. Bhone Myint Kyaw; AE Kinio is the most cited author in this field. The most cited journals are the Journal of Medical Internet Research, Journal of Surgical Education, The Journal of Technology Transfer, the most prominent journal. The content analysis results showed that "21st-century skill, problem, and implementation" has become the most studied variable in the article

    Gifted students' number sense skills in terms of number sense components

    As a descriptive survey research, this study aimed to investigate the number sense skills of gifted in terms of number sense components. Participant of this research consisted of 123 gifted secondary school students, who were selected according to the convenience sampling method in Turkey. The data of this research were collected in the 2021-2022 academic year. The number sense test was used as the data collection tool. This test is comprised of 20 items which were prepared in line with five basic number sense components. The data obtained from the data collection tool were analysed by quantitative analysis methods. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the number senses of gifted secondary school students differed according to gender and this difference was in favour of the male students. The highest number sense performance according to grade levels belonged to eight grade level students. Furthermore, it was observed that the number sense performance increased in parallel with the grade levels of the students. In addition, when the mean of correct answers for the number sense components was considered, it was concluded that the highest mean was in the understanding of the effect of the operation and the lowest mean was in the understanding of the number concept, respectively

    The effectiveness of IDEA learning model in mathematics concept understanding

    This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of the issue, discussion, establishment, and application (IDEA) learning model in embedding mathematical concepts understanding. It is a quantitative study with a quasi- experimental approach. This research was conducted at Malang Islamic University with students majoring Mathematics education study program and in their first academic year as the subjects. Subjects were divided into two group, experimental and control and measured their result using posttest only control group design. There are six instruments consisting six items used to measure mathematical concepts understanding. The results confirmed that H0 is rejected, while Ha is accepted proved by t count (3.132) more than  table (1.674). It means there is a significant difference between the of both groups (experimental and control). In addition, the results indicated that the IDEA learning models is effective to assist students in understanding mathematical concepts showed by the higher score of experimental groups than control group. Three factors are involved in order to implement the IDEA learning model effectively; namely: individual problem-solving opportunities, active student involvement, and guidance and assistance (from lecturer) on the IDEA learning model. This research is only limited to preservice teacher, further research is required in order to implement this model for mathematics learning at junior and senior high schools’ level

    Hyper content e-module in information behavior course with the assistant of screencast

    In the 21st century, continuous innovation and adaptation in every component of learning is required in education, both in the competency component, material content, strategy and media, as well as its evaluation. This study emphasized the development of an electronic or digital module in the information behavior course, it is one of the courses regarding the characteristics of the student activity level that accommodates information retrieval and strives to use appropriate information. The e-module design is developed utilize the 4D model by define, design, develop and disseminate. The participants of this research involved media experts, material experts and students of the Library and Information Science study program at two universities, which are are Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and Universitas Negeri Malang, there are 20 people in total who used e-modules in limited dissemination on information behavior course. This research revealed the electronic module in the course, the emphasis of the module content design which is enriched with digital-based information sources or in another word called as hyper content that becomes a differentiator in presenting the module content, coupled with the power of audio and visual media or called as screencast. Through this research, lecturers able to prepare independent learning materials by utilizing digital technology
