Pilot study: Impact of school director-led workplace professional development training for in-service teachers
Get PDFTeacher’s attitudes and strategies can be influenced by workplace professional learning, which in turn affects student engagement and learning. Although educators are accountable for their professional development, the school must be learning-centered and able to provide resources for all members of the institution to improve their teaching and learning skills for the overall development of the school. The project's goal was to perform a pilot intervention study on the impact of school director-led workplace professional development for in-service teachers to provide evidence and recommendations on the impact of school director-led workplace professional development training for teachers. The intervention study on school director-led workplace professional development training for teachers on formative assessment indicates that there were significant changes in teachers’ understanding and use of formative assessment. The result found that there is statistical difference between the teacher’s pre- and post- intervention survey response on formative assessment workplace professional development training. The evidence stands as a recommendation for school directors, teachers, the ministry of education and other stakeholders for quality teaching and whole school development
Students’ perspective on online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic
Get PDFThe COVID-19 pandemic has impacted changing the model of learning activities. Teaching and learning activities that have usually been done face-to-face have now turned into online learning. This study identified student perspectives on online learning activities for Department of Civics Education students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Halu Oleo University, Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study used a survey method by distributing questionnaires in the form of Google Forms to students, and a total of 227 students participated in this study. Our study focused on online learning media, learning effectiveness, lecturers' abilities, obstacles, and student recommendations regarding online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data analysis in this study was carried out descriptively, presented in the form of frequency, percentage, and graph. The study results found that the most effective online learning media felt by students at the Department of Civics Education were Google Meet and Zoom Cloud Meetings. Besides, the majority of students considered online learning to be no more effective than face-to-face lectures. Lecturers need to provide two-way learning materials through discussion as well as question and answer. Furthermore, the main determining factors that cause online learning to be ineffective are network constraints and internet quotas. Therefore, students expected the lecturers to understand the network constraints experienced by students during online learning and recommend implementing learning activities for blended learning (combination of online and offline) while still complying with the health protocols
Electronic module as learning needs to write exposition texts for junior high school students
Get PDFThis study was a step toward the creation of an e-module to creat flips book-based exposition texts for junior high schools. The purpose of this study was to offer an examination of students' demands when creating exposition papers. A survey was used for the investigation. The data for this inquiry was gathered through a questionnaire. In this study, a Likert scale was utilized to examine students' attitudes, opinions, and perceptions of the built electronic module. This research made use of a checklist-style questionnaire with a range of assessments of 1 to 5. The questionnaire was distributed to students from four junior high schools. This sampling technique was based on the sampling quota established by the researcher. The data analysis technique involved converting the category value into an assessment score and examining the result. According to the findings, 61.5% of students had difficulties in interpreting the material of exposition text, and the rest of 80.1% desired that the exposition text writing content be presented using entertaining, interactive, and innovative learning methods. This showed the need for the preparation of electronic modules for writing flip book-based exposition texts
A critical review of whole theory: Stationenlernen learning technique and German language learning outcomes
Get PDFThis critical review aims to describe the integrity of paraphrasing the theory or references and scientific journals that become references. The contribution of this research is as a reference and input to develop the creativity of critical thinking of the quoters. The method used is listening and analyzing the journal's contents as a source of data; critically identifying the parts of the journal containing quotations, direct quotations, and paraphrasing of the theories being referenced. The results of the critical review show several weaknesses, including several quotes that are not accompanied by relevant data and references, errors in citing reference sources. In addition, quotations or paraphrases have paid attention to the integrity of meaning with several techniques, namely complete and partial paraphrasing techniques. Partial is divided into two; according to the research formulation, the theory is paraphrased and several points of the combined theory are paraphrased because they are closely related and complementary. This critical review implies that it is a follow-up study to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of a scientific article based on relevant theories, studies, and previous research results
The effectiveness of peer educators and guidance counselling teachers to the knowledge of reproductive health
Get PDFAdolescence is the most vulnerable period to reproductive health problems. These problems include early pregnancy, unsafe abortion, sexually infections transmitted (STIs) including the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), sexual abuse. Access for sexuality education and reproductive health services to comprehensive and youth-friendly was limited. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of peer educators and guidance and counselling teachers in adolescent reproductive health level of knowledge. This is a quantitative study with a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design with treatment groups using peer educators and teacher as control groups. The sample size was 70 respondents. Data was collected by questionnaire that already had validity and reliability test. Data analysis used univariate, t-test and logistic regression. The results of this study showed that the provision of information was more effective through guidance conselling teachers (p=0.000, exp B=14.5). This study recommends that improve adolescents’ reproductive knowledge need to optimize the role of guidance and counseling teachers in providing information
Lecturers’ checklist instrument to monitor students’ understanding in distance learning
Get PDFThis paper aimed at exploring the results of participant self monitoring using a checklist instrument in distance learning with flipped classroom setting. The participants were 11 lecturers of Bioprocess Engineering Study Program at Institut Teknologi Del (IT Del), Indonesia. The objective of the checklist instrument was for the lecturers to monitor their students’ understanding about the lessons given each week. The data generated from the instrument was analysed descriptively. The results found that pre-class, in-class and out-class are important parts of learning in flipped classroom setting. The data showed that 56% of students achieved good understading of the knowledge taught by their lecturers. The same idea as in-class, attendance checking and interaction between students and lecturers had a key factor in the learning process. It was found that students’ understanding increased by 20% (very good), 62% (good) and 18% (moderate) through questions and answers, discussions, and tests at the end of class. Those were the modes of interactions that had been done in class. In line with an out-class checklist, giving assignments and feedback could improve students understanding into the level of very good (61%), good (27%) and sufficient (10%). with using a checklist tool, participants in this study self-monitored their progress in a flipped classroom while taking distance learning courses online to improve the quality of their class
Kahoot!-based evaluation instruments on acid-base materials
Get PDFThis research aimed to developed an evaluation instrument based on Kahoot! valid, practical, and reliable in evaluating student learning. This research is a model of development that use Borg and Gall. There were seven stages performed, starting with research and data collection, planning, product design development, initial field trials, review of initial trial results, main field trials, and refinement of field trial results. This research was conducted at Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak Senior High School. As nine samples for the initial field trial and 29 samples involved for the main field trial. Three instruments developed by the researcher were validity, practicality, and reliability. The research data was obtained from the instrument as a result of the validation of materials experts and media experts, as well as questionnaires for teacher and student responses to the Kahoot! based evaluation instrument. The percentage of teachers and student responses to the instrument were 97.22% and 83.33%, respectively (very practical). Validation of materials experts and media experts with the respective percentages of 81.73% and 80.47% (very valid) and the obtained confidence value is 0.89 (very reliable). The results of this study indicated the instrument can be used in the evaluation of learning about acid-base materials
Teaching experience on online learning in higher education: Generational analysis
Get PDFA transition in learning model implementation occurred in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online learning answers the needs of long-distance learning. However, not all higher education institutions are thoroughly prepared for online learning. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the online learning experience at higher education institutions from the perspectives of multigenerational teaching staff. This study utilized mixed-method research through a quantitative and qualitative study. A total of 93 participants; male (n=40) and female (n=57) teaching staff filled out a research questionnaire consisting of closed and open questions about online learning. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analysis. The results indicated positive and negative contributions of the online learning process that affect the effectiveness of online learning according to multigenerational teaching staff perspectives. These findings contribute to the global discussion about the online learning process in higher education and recommend the usage of online learning for teaching staff across generations, complemented with an effective instructional design that would help provide a rigorous learning environment
Challenges and adaptation on online learning during COVID-19 pandemic
Get PDFCoronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has impacted the continuity of learning in education aspects. This research aimed to analyze the challenges and the adaptative strategy of online learning for urban vocational school teachers and students during COVID-19. The research applied a descriptive qualitative design in supporting the data needed. The sample of the study was taken randomly from a vocational school in Indonesia consisting of seven students and four teachers in English subject teaching class. In gathering the data, observation and interview were used as research instrument and it was analyzed using Braun’s thematic analysis. The data gathered revealed that vocational school students face some challenges when learning online in English teaching subject during COVID-19 pandemic and did the adaptation dealing with the situation. The interview exposed the challenge faced by the vocational school teachers and students during online learning covering lack of lesson understanding, low creativity in using learning sources, lack of psychological bond with the teacher, internet stability, lack of face meeting exposure, and learning accessibility. The adaptive strategy implemented by the respondents mainly link with technical stuff like stabilizing internet coverage, searching the learning resource more intensive, and providing learning module
State defense internalization in a university: Theory of planned behavior approach
Get PDFUniversitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur (UPNVJT) is a university with state defense education’s characters. In practice, those character did not cover the academic field as a whole. Through the theory of planned behavior (TPB), the research carried out the process of internalizing state defense values in thesis writing as a form of character graduates. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach involving stakeholders at UPNJT, namely LP3M and head of department. Data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) software. The results found that two TPB variables, namely attitudes and subjective norms in the organization, had an influence on the intention in implementing state defense values. The intention in implementing state defense values will influence perceived self-efficacy of state defense values. Meanwhile, the subjective norms of the perpetrators and the perception of behavioral control in accordance with the state defense values have no influence on the intention in implementing the state defense values
