Learning-based Dynamic Risk Indicators (LADRI) for Risk Prediction in Automated Driving Systems

    Get PDF
As Automated Driving Systems revolutionize the intelligent transportation landscape, ensuring unparalleled safety becomes increasingly essential. Moreover, as automation levels rise, the responsibility for safety shifts from the driver to the system developers. This transition necessitates a reevaluation of safety assumptions and the creation of a risk assessment framework to assess system failures within an ADS. The challenges of continuous risk assessment and early hazard identification for ADS is multifaceted. Firstly, it is crucial to achieve comprehensive scenario coverage, as current standards often focus on a limited set of predefined conditions and may not encompass the wide range of potential real-world scenarios an ADS might encounter. Secondly, integrating complex system interactions is challenging because traditional approaches may not fully account for the detailed interactions among various ADS subsystems or effectively analyze the associated risks. Thirdly, integrating and analyzing diverse data streams is essential but challenging, and current frameworks may not adequately address this aspect. Lastly, validation under various operational conditions and continuous model improvement is vital, with standard validation processes potentially not accounting adequately for the wide variability in operational conditions faced by ADS and failing to specify measures for open traffic scenarios. The LeArning-based Dynamic Risk Indicators (LADRI) framework addresses these challenges, aiding safety engineers in early hazard detection for ADS development. It employs a Plan-Do-Train-Adjust-Assess cyclic process, enabling continuous improvement in risk assessment across diverse dynamic driving conditions. This approach leverages advanced learning algorithms and incorporates risk-specific context information from both the operational environment and the ADS itself, providing runtime contextual insights for the model to accurately predict severity and controllability indicators. This strategy bridges traditional gaps in risk assessment by allowing the evaluation of severity and controllability to adapt to different dynamic environments, instead of relying on subjective judgment. By monitoring the risk spectrum during driving operations, safety engineers can identify specific risk profiles, thereby enhancing safety mechanisms for subsequent iterations of risk assessment. Iteratively applying this framework allows developers to transition from unknown-unsafe regions to known-safe regions, thus progressively enhancing safety. A use case of Highway-Lane Following with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) functionality is utilized, creating extensive testing across a variety of driving scenarios, on different road shapes under diverse conditions, which has demonstrated the framework's robust capability for accurate risk prediction. The analysis underscores the importance of integrating time-based, distance-based, and impact-based risk features for a comprehensive risk assessment. These findings, supported by comprehensive model performance metrics and evaluations, position the LADRI framework as an advanced tool to enhance the risk assessment process.

Advanced Methods for Model-Driven Safety Analysis and Verification

    Get PDF
The semiconductor industry is experiencing rapid growth, which is driving the need for innovative development methodologies, particularly in the digital design domain. In addition to ensuring correct behavior, designers must guarantee that the chips operate at predefined levels of reliability when used in automotive products. Safety considerations have become an integral part of the development process following the adoption of the ISO 26262 safety standard for automotive safety-critical systems. ISO 26262 ensures that these systems behave according to required safety levels by mitigating the risk of hazardous malfunctions. The standard recommends fault injection to verify and analyze safety-critical systems; however, this process often proves to be laborious and error-prone. To combat these challenges, advanced and automated methods are required. Accordingly, this thesis automates the safety verification process, utilizing model-driven architecture principles to enhance productivity, quality, and reliability. The thesis proposes the generation of mixed-granularity models to represent designs, where gate-level models represent safety-critical components and Register-Transfer Level (RTL) represents the rest of the design. The mixed-granularity model is achieved through model transformation, and formal equivalence checks are applied during this process to ensure the correctness of the transformation. This approach also enables fault injection directly into the design, reducing the overhead caused by the use of additional fault injection tools. The absence of bugs of this process is guaranteed by equivalence check. Furthermore, the ability to inject faults at the design level has enabled the development of a novel fault emulation framework utilizing FPGAs. This proposed framework scales well to large hardware designs and has been successfully applied to several RISC-V based CPU subsystems with a runtime advantage over traditional simulation-based fault injection frameworks. Moreover, an automated flow based on formal methods has been developed that verifies the functionality of design hardening mechanisms and their integration into processor designs. This flow delivers high-quality verification results without requiring white-box design knowledge. Furthermore, the thesis introduces an automated and efficient approach for generating Software-Based Self Tests (SBST) tailored for RISC-V processor cores. This method involves testing processor cores through instructions, providing a viable alternative to hardware-centric solutions. Additionally, the SBST is combined with a novel Program Flow Checking (PFC) technique to achieve high fault coverage and high fault detection rates that comply with ISO 26262 requirements. The proposed PFC is a mixed hardware/software solution that detects faults by monitoring program flow execution. The proposed solutions have proven to be effective in numerous industrial designs. The achieved results demonstrate that automated approaches significantly reduce development costs and are less susceptible to errors. Through a holistic generation flow, multiple safety verification techniques have been explored, encompassing methods based on simulation, emulation, and formal verification

Dynamics of Microcystis surface scum formation under different wind conditions: the role of hydrodynamic processes at the air-water interface

    Get PDF
Due to climate change, Microcystis blooms occur at increasing frequencies in aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Wind-generated turbulence is a crucial environmental stressor that can vertically disperse the Microcystis surface scum, reducing its light availability. Yet, the interactions of Microcystis scum with the wind-generated hydrodynamic processes, particularly those at the air-water interface, remain poorly understood. Here, we explore the response of Microcystis (including colony size and migration dynamics) to varying magnitudes and durations of intermittent wind disturbances in a mesocosm system. The flow velocities, size of Microcystis colonies, and the areal coverage of the water surface by scum were measured through video observations. Our results demonstrate that low wind speeds increase colony size by providing a stable condition where Microcystis forms a scum layer and aggregates into large colonies at the air-water interface. In contrast, wind disturbances disperse scum and generate turbulence, resulting in smaller colonies with higher magnitudes of wind disturbance. We observed that surface scum can form rapidly following a long period (6 h) of high-magnitude (4.5 m s-1) wind disturbance. Furthermore, our results indicate reduced water surface tension caused by the presence of Microcystis, which can decrease surface flow velocity and counteract wind-driven mixing. The reduced surface tension may also drive lateral convection at the water surface. These findings suggest that Microcystis reduces surface tension, likely by releasing surface-active materials, as an adaptive response to various wind conditions. This could result in an increased rate of surface scum re-formation under wind conditions and potentially facilitate the lateral expansion of scum patches during weak wind periods. This study reveals new insights into how Microcystis copes with different wind conditions and highlights the importance of the air-water interface for Microcystis scum dynamics

Theoretical concept for in-situ condition monitoring of rotary shaft seals using surface strain-based analysis of the deformation state

    Get PDF
In situ condition monitoring of rotary shaft seals could significantly improve the reliability of future seals in numerous applications. A superficial application of strain gauges capturing the state of deformation could offer a cost-effective retrofit solution for indirect measurements of central operational parameters. Within a simulative investigation of the sealing system, possible sensor positions for determination of the preload as well as the friction torque prevailing in the sealing contact are therefore identified as two parameters directly related to the operating condition. Further investigations of the potential sensor signal with focus on its time-dependent behavior prove the theoretical feasibility of the measurement concepts developed and provide promising prospects for an initial technical implementation.

Procedural Modeling and Image Synthesis for Virtual Surface Inspection Planning

    Get PDF
Product manufacturing is performed in a massively automated and increasingly customized manner. However, overall production speed is limited by automation of inspection since each product has to ensure the required quality. A widespread and often-used quality assurance method is visual surface inspection. Automated surface inspection relies on an inspection plan and defect recognition algorithms. Both inspection planning and defect recognition algorithms development heavily rely on the availability of representative image data containing various product surface textures and imperfections showing a wide variety of possible surface responses to different viewing and lighting conditions. Due to the advancements in manufacturing, defects in products occur rarely, with different frequencies of appearance, followed by a subjective and laborious annotation process. Further, since the surface texture is often not relevant to product performance and thus not controlled, products with different surface textures are not treated as different product samples and thus not provided. Motivated by aforementioned problems, this work introduces the following contributions: (1) image synthesis requirements for industrial quality inspection and a novel realistic image synthesis pipeline satisfying those requirements (Chapter 4), (2) texture synthesis requirements for industrial quality inspection and a procedural approach to parameterized surface texture modeling incorporating domain knowledge (Chapter 5) and (3) defect synthesis requirements for industrial quality inspection as well as a procedural approach to parameterized defect modeling (Chapter 6). The contributions presented in this thesis, make it possible to obtain, in a controllable and automated manner, the required amount of image data, containing realistic and varying surface textures resembling machining surfaces as well as diversified geometrical defects with automated, pixel-precise annotations (Chapters 7,8). The presented contributions enable the inspection planning and development of machine vision algorithms for defect recognition to be performed completely virtually, by inspection planning experts, without computer graphics knowledge
