The Virtual Experience - Examining Visual, Auditory and Haptic Capabilities and Aspects of Spatial Cognition and User Experience in Virutal Reality
This dissertation aims to shed light on both visual and non-visual aspects of spatial cognition and user experience (UX) in Virtual Reality (VR). Four studies were conducted using VR environments, collecting data on the feeling of presence during all four studies. The first two studies examined visual aspects of spatial cognition varying different task factors and UX factors. These factors included graphic fidelity, level difficulty as well as availability of landmark cues to help orientation. The third study then varied non-visual feedback cues in an invisible and out-of-sight object search tasks. The fourth study was a pilot study on UX of using haptic data gloves in teaching and learning in the area of Manual Medicine and Manual Therapy. To examine the UX, a VR application using those haptic data gloves was developed using a User-Centered Design approach, incorporating teachers' and students' opinions in the development. The developed VR application was then tested by practitioners, teachers and students of Manual Medicine and Therapy and data was collected on the usability and UX of both the VR app as well as the haptic data gloves.
The results of all of those studies are then discussed and embedded in the current research, putting a focus on presence, UX and the different modalities and how these factors might influence each other in VR. The dissertation then closes by arguing why multimodal VR experiences should be focussed on as well as giving an outlook on what might be needed to achieve truly multimodal VR experience
Recoverable Robust Periodic Timetabling in Public Transport
An important aspect of optimising public transport is finding a good timetable. On the one hand, short travel times are important from the passengers' point of view. On the other hand, tight timetables without buffer times are prone to delays, which are inevitable in practice and highly dissatisfactory for the passengers. Hence, a good timetable should also have some degree of delay resistance. Often a periodic timetable is desirable, i.e. a timetable which repeats in a regular pattern (e.g. every hour). However, delays do in general not occur periodically, so many robust timetable models only consider aperiodic timetables.
In our work we analyse different robustness concepts in the context of periodic timetabling, where we allow aperiodic delays. The main focus lies on recoverable robustness, which in our context leads to the integration of the Periodic Event Scheduling Problem (PESP) and Delay Management (DM). These two problems are usually considered in two different networks: while PESP is formulated in a periodic network, DM is considered in an aperiodic network, whose construction uses the timetable as input. Hence, a first challenge when integrating these two problems is to bridge the gap between periodicity and aperiodicity by solving PESP also in the aperiodic network. For this purpose we develop a new timetabling model -- Periodic Timetabling in Aperiodic Network (PTTA) -- which finds a periodic timetable using the aperiodic network.
Using this preparatory work, we then develop the Recoverable Robust Periodic Timetabling Problem (RRPT), which is the first one to consider periodic timetables with aperiodic delays. Since we have multiple objective functions, namely the travel time and the worst-case delay, we consider several variants of the problem. Furthermore, we present three equivalent formulations for RRPT, compare their performance in a computational study and identify some properties of recoverable robust timetables.
Due to the high complexity of the problem, which is due to both PESP and DM being NP-complete, solving RRPT to optimality on large networks is an unrealistic goal. Hence, we develop several heuristics for finding feasible and ``good" solutions. By modifying the heuristics and testing them for different parameter choices, we identify the most promising variants.
Apart from recoverable robustness, many other robustness concepts exist in the literature, among them strict robustness, light robustness and adjustable robustness. We apply them to the problem at hand and analyse the relations between the resulting models in special cases. Furthermore, we compare them with respect to the real travel time, which is the sum of the travel time in the undisturbed setting and the worst-case delay, and discuss for which of these concepts considering aperiodic delays is actually equivalent to only considering periodic delays, and for which it does indeed make a difference. We conclude that recoverable robust timetables are superior, but come with the disadvantage of being the most difficult to compute.
For the development and evaluation of new assistant functions for bicycles and new bicycle components, safe and reproducible measurements are very important. Therefore, a test platform in the form of a self-driving bicycle is developed in the following work. By using this test platform, critical maneuvers can be performed without endangering a driver and test sequences that need to be repeated can be performed automated and reproducibly.
In a first step, a prototype is built up and two models for simulation and controller design are derived. These models are based on models known from the literature, but instead of using the steer torque as an input, the steer rate is used.
Various calibration methods and state estimators are then developed in order to obtain the bicycle states which are not directly measurable. The state estimator, which estimates the orientation and speed of the bicycle, uses a simple sensor configuration, so that it can also be used in series applications.
An important part of this work is the development of a lateral dynamics controller. This controller must be able to stabilize the bicycle and follow a given target yaw rate. To reduce the influence of the steering dynamics, only steer rate-based controllers are developed. First, a linear quadratic integral controller is designed, which is extended by notch filters to attenuate resonances in the drive train. In order to be able to react to changes of the target yaw rate in advance, this controller is then extended to an optimal preview controller with an integral part (OPI controller), where instead of the current target yaw rate, a forward-looking target yaw rate trajectory is given.
To realize the requirements for the test platform, a new concept for path following control is developed and tested on the prototype: The OPI controller for lateral dynamics control is combined with methods of pursuit path following control and fifth order polynomials to generate target yaw rate trajectories.
The resulting overall system performs very well in both simulation and experiments and can follow paths with minimum curve radii of 1.8 m reliably and without large oscillations
Die Fridays for Future-Bewegung – Ethnographische Erkundungen
Geleitet von der offenen Geertz‘schen Frage „what the hell is going on here?“ (vgl. Latour, 2017 a, b, 2018 a, b, c) eine zentrale Rolle als „sensibilisierendes Konzept“ (vgl. Blumer, 1954, S. 7) zukommt.
Post-installed injection anchors, using commercially available threaded rods and reinforcing bars, have been extensively applied in civil engineering. As per current knowledge, fasteners can be utilized in both non-cracked and cracked concrete under the action of quasi-static and seismic loads. The qualification and approval of post-installed injection anchors in concrete is carried out according to the currently valid guideline EAD 330499-01-0601.
The assessment of shear load-bearing capacities of injection anchors currently emphasizes the steel tensile strength of the fastening element. However, the influence of steel elongation at the maximum load of the utilized threaded and reinforcing bars used is not considered in any of the guidelines for the evaluation of static and seismic shear tests. Additionally, the effect of composite mortar properties on the shear capacity of injection anchors are not taken into account in the test evaluation.
This thesis aimed to investigate the load-bearing and deformation behavior of shear-loaded injection anchors in cracked concrete. Static and seismic shear tests were carried out with different variations of steel grades and injection mortars. Upon comparing the test results with the calculated shear capacities, it was determined that the computational determination of shear capacity necessitates the consideration of additional influencing factors.
In this thesis, the influence of steel elongation at maximum load and the bond strength of the composite mortar used on the test results of static and seismic approval tests is clarified. The performance of a fracture pattern analysis on the freely grouted injection anchors, in conjunction with the determined material characteristics, provided new insights into the qualitative evaluation of injection anchors subjected to shear stress.
Based on these investigations, recommendations for test performance and qualification of injection anchors in cracked concrete under quasistatic and seismic shear loading are formulated. Additionally, a supplement to the existing guideline EAD 330499-01-0601 is proposed that aims to enhance the accuracy and reliability of shear load assessments for injection anchors
Distinct types of intramitochondrial protein aggregates protect mitochondria against proteotoxic stress
Proteins need to be folded into their native conformation to fulfill their function. However, perturbations of the transport, folding, and assembly lead to the misfolding of proteins and challenge cellular protein homeostasis (proteostasis). Therefore, cells evolved an elaborate chaperone and protease network to deal with such conditions. Chaperone-mediated protein folding and proteasomal degradation clear the cytosol from misfolded proteins. Moreover, misfolded proteins can be sequestered into aggregates to lower the proteostasis network's workload and reduce toxic effects. Proteins imported into mitochondria fold and assemble only upon successful import and are, therefore, no longer subject to cytosolic quality control. Mitochondrial chaperones and proteases that are part of the mitochondrial proteostasis network have been identified and characterized. Still, factors that facilitate, control, and resolve aggregates for the sequestration of misfolded proteins are largely unknown.
In this study, I aimed to characterize the formation of protein aggregates in the mitochondrial matrix. On the one hand, I elucidated the role of the matrix disaggregase, Hsp78. Hsp78 associates with protein aggregates upon the induction of heat stress or when misfolded model proteins are imported into the mitochondrial matrix. By employing microscopy and proteomic analysis, I showed that Hsp78 interacts with protein aggregates and helps to recover from stress by refolding them. At the same time, non-productive refolding of aggregates leads to proteolytic degradation via the matrix master protease Pim1. On the other hand, I identified the mitochondrially encoded protein Var1 as a novel component of the matrix proteostasis network. Var1 is a mitochondrially encoded protein of the mitochondrial ribosome, but I discovered that Var1 has a second, independent function as it induces the formation of aggregates, which I named Var1 bodies. This aggregation-prone behavior is associated with the proteins' unusual sequence of many asparagine repeats. Hsp78 and Var1 bodies are distinct structures, absorbing different sets of proteins. Moreover, whereas Hsp78 aggregates form only transiently, Var1 bodies are persistent and are not resolved once stress conditions are over.
My findings show that the formation of aggregates in the matrix shows clear parallels to that in the cytosol: Hsp78, like Hsp104, binds various protein aggregates from which some get un- and refolded while others are degraded by the Pim1 protease. Var1, on the other hand, acts like the cytosolic prion-protein Rnq1 that forms insoluble protein deposits that absorb and sequester other cellular proteins
Exploring Decision-Making Competence in Sugar-Substitute Choices: A Cross-Disciplinary Investigation among Chemistry and Sports and Health Students
Interdisciplinary teaching approaches have gained significant importance in today’s educational landscape. Among these approaches, decision-making competence plays a pivotal role by nurturing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Focusing on the decision-making process regarding the sensibility of using sugar-substitutes, this study addresses three key questions. (1) Do chemistry and sports and health students differ in evaluation-competence? (2) What criteria do they use in evaluating the decision-making problem? (3) How do they use ChatGPT (OpenAI, San Francisco, CA, USA), an AI tool, in decision-making? Through surveys, the study revealed two evaluation-competence factors, identified decision-making criteria, and analyzed querying behavior using ChatGPT. The results revealed nuanced differences between the two student groups in the factors of evaluation-competence. While both groups showed improvements in recognizing moral dimensions and considering alternatives, chemistry students displayed enhanced abilities in establishing evaluation criteria and empathetic thinking. Furthermore, differences emerged in the criteria selected for decision-making and querying behavior, indicating varying engagement with ChatGPT. This study offers insights into enhancing interdisciplinary education and underscores the need for tailored interventions to address diverse student needs
Turning corporate social responsibility (CSR) inside-out
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) professionals play a critical role in integrating sustainability within organizations, responding to complex global challenges, and navigating multifaceted organizational dynamics. This dissertation explores the occupational landscape of CSR professionals through the lens of legitimacy. It adopts a multi-dimensional approach, analyzing emerging themes, challenges, and strategies to illuminate the complex dynamics shaping their roles.
The first study systematically reviews existing literature to map the evolving landscape of CSR professionals, identifying four primary research foci: economic, political, and socio-cultural environment; organizational dynamics; occupational characteristics; and individual-level psychological dynamics. The second study employs qualitative methods to examine how CSR professionals cultivate internal legitimacy within organizations, unveiling key strategies and their relationship to occupational self-perception. The third study develops and validates a corporate profession legitimacy (CPL) scale, providing a robust tool for measuring the legitimacy of corporate professions and offering insights into the legitimization processes of CSR roles.
By integrating perspectives from CSR, professionalization, and legitimacy theory, this research contributes to a nuanced understanding of CSR professionals' strategies, challenges, and impacts. It advances the academic discourse on modern management occupations and provides actionable insights for organizations aiming to enhance the effectiveness and acceptance of CSR initiatives. Furthermore, the findings offer a foundation for future research into the professionalization and legitimacy of emerging corporate roles in a globalized context
