Character sheaves and modular representations of finite reductive groups

    Get PDF
In this thesis, we study finite reductive groups and their modular representations in non-defining characteristic. In 1990, Geck stated a conjecture on the unitriangularity of decomposition matrices of these groups. Decomposition matrices encode the link between ordinary representations (over a field of characteristic zero) and modular representations (over a field of positive characteristic \ell ). In 2020, Brunat--Dudas--Taylor showed this conjecture for unipotent blocks for a very good prime number \ell , introducing Kawanaka characters. Thanks to the Morita equivalence between unipotent blocks and non-isolated ones, Feng--Späth extended this result to non-isolated blocks in 2021. The aim of this thesis is to study possible generalisations of Brunat--Dudas--Taylor result. Firstly, we extend this result for a bad prime \ell in the case of simple groups for the unipotents blocks. Inspired by the Brunat--Dudas--Taylor method, we study the decomposition of some Kawanaka characters in terms of ordinary characters in the unipotent blocks. In order to do so, we compute the values of the characteristic functions of characters sheaves on mixed conjugacy classes, based on previous work of Lusztig. Lastly, we show through the examples of G2 G_2 and F4 F_4 how the obtained method allows us to study the unitriangularity of isolated blocks for exceptional groups of adjoint types

    Get PDF
The use of automated shuttle systems in high-bay warehouses, particularly in systems with small load units, has increased significantly in recent years. One of the particular attributes of shuttle systems compared to conventional stacker cranes, or even manual storage, is the cyclical load on the supporting structure of the racking system itself. The shuttle vehicles move on rails in the racking system, which also serves to transfer the load to the rack supports for the stored goods. This greatly increases cyclic load on the racking components, brings the risk of fatigue failure to the forefront. Instead of cost extensive monitoring methods of the relevant components over the entire service life of the racking system, it is more cost effective to ensure fatigue resistance in the design phase. The characteristics of components subject to fatigue loading include the use of thin-walled, cold-formed, and galvanized components, which are generally not welded. Other attributes include the large number of notches resulting from the tight bending radii on one hand and the numerous punched holes typical of racking systems on the other. In this project, extensive scholarly research was carried out to identify a suitable fa- tigue analysis for the fatigue loading of automated high-bay warehouses with shuttle systems. The local strain approach emerged as a appropriate concept due to its high flexibility and comprehensive applicability. This concept is characterized by it abili- ty to have numerous input parameters of the fatigue analysis that can be estimated analytically, as well as determined numerically and/or experimentally. As part of this work, extensive experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to deter- mine a suitable procedure for fatigue analysis. These investigations included strain- controlled Wöhler tests, incremental step tests, and stress-controlled Wöhler tests, as well as numerous preliminary investigations, such as residual stress measurements, roughness measurements, and hardness measurements. In addition to simulating the manufacturing process of the rail, the numerical investigations included purely elastic and elastic-plastic volume element simulations and shell element simulations. This resulted in a wide range of input parameters for the fatigue analysis. The objective of the presented work is, among other aspects, to identify the essen- tial differences for the input parameters determined in various ways and to analyse how the determination of an input parameter, i.e. analytically, experimentally or nu- merically, affects the calculated service life. Furthermore, recommendations for the analytical, experimental, or numerical determination of these input parameters are to be given in order to provide different procedures that vary in numerical and ex- perimental effort and the resulting calculated service life. This has been conducted through an extensive parameter study and sensitivity analysis. This work is intended to contribute to navigating through the flexible and versatile local strain approach in order to determine the required service life of the rails of an automated high-bay warehouse, economically and reliably

Study and Implementation of Wall Modelling for Large Eddy Simulations of Turbulent Wall-Bounded Flow by Means of the Lattice Boltzmann Method

    Get PDF
This thesis describes the implementation of the immersed boundary method with Cartesian grids for large eddy simulations in the lattice Boltzmann context. Wall modelling allows the use of the advantages of the lattice Boltzmann method for LES without the high computational costs caused by wall-resolved approaches. However, this presents challenges because the near-wall nodes lie in a wide range of y + values, and the adjacent nodes are not perpendicular, as in the body-fitted mesh used in traditional solvers. These problems are addressed by a reconstruction procedure for the distribution function, which consists of near-wall friction velocity interpolations for smooth and stable boundary behaviour with coarse grids. In addition, accurate explicit wall functions consistent with the turbulence model were implemented to reduce the computational effort while maintaining accuracy. Finally, near-wall turbulence modelling was enhanced using a hybrid RANS–LES model with a blending region. The implemented code was verified for the turbulent channel flow case for different frictional Reynolds numbers, showing reasonable results. A complete discussion of the required algorithms, common modelling errors, results, and possible future work is provided

Accountability of AI-based Algorithmic Decision-Making Systems - from Theory to Software Engineering Practice

    Get PDF
Rapid advancement and widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have revolutionized numerous domains, transforming how we live, work, and interact. However, along with the immense potential of AI-based systems, there are significant challenges and risks that need to be addressed. One critical need is the regulation of such systems, particularly those making decisions about people as well as their property, so- called algorithmic decision-making (ADM) systems. Traditional regulatory approaches are inadequate for AI-based systems due to their vast input and state spaces, reliance on training data, complex inner structures, and the fast-paced nature of technological developments. Existing regulatory frameworks struggle to keep up with these novel challenges, requiring new approaches to ensure the responsible and ethical deployment of such technologies. Moreover, the current understanding and operationalization of key concepts such as fairness, explainability, and accountability in the context of AI-based systems remain vague, hindering the development of effective methods and solutions. Against this backdrop, the following scientific question arises: How can we address the challenges associated with the development, use, and control of AI-based systems to ensure their responsible and trustworthy deployment? This thesis employs a multidisciplinary approach to address the challenges associated with accountability in AI-based systems. The research is based on gaining an understanding of what such accountability means. Therefore, a generic software development process is dissected into sections, each examined separately to identify transparency and inspectability mechanisms. Building upon these mechanisms, various auditing procedures are explored, and the concept of certificates is introduced to ensure trustworthy audits. After this, testing of data-driven components and AI-based applications is described, focusing on fairness testing and its application within the audit procedures. As all approaches for promoting accountability require sufficient incentives to implement them, this thesis also reviews various approaches aimed at providing such incentives. It examines the role of the risk-based regulation approach suggested by the upcoming European AI Act and the recent Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR) approach, highlighting potential benefits and areas for improvement. The multidisciplinary approach provides a comprehensive toolbox of methods and concepts to establish accountability in AI-based ADM systems. By providing insights into the effectiveness of these approaches, this work contributes to shaping future regulatory frameworks and promoting intrinsic motivations for accountability. Overall, this thesis not only identifies limitations in current approaches but also offers practical solutions and outlines future research directions to further advance the field of AI accountability. By fostering responsible AI development and usage, these results contribute to the long-term benefits of AI in society, ensuring that AI technologies can be deployed ethically, transparently, and in alignment with societal values

    Get PDF
The thesis presents a cost-effective approach to enhancing the autonomy and optimization capabilities of smart sensory electronic systems (SSES) through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) at the lowest levels of automated test equipment (ATE). This integration aims to realize self-configuring, self-optimizing, and self-healing ("self-X") properties in SSES, leveraging the transformative power of machine learning to revolutionize traditional sensory systems. In the era of Industry 4.0, where the fusion of advanced digital technologies with the physical production and operational processes defines a new industrial revolution, the application of AI and machine learning in SSES represents a critical step forward in realizing intelligent, efficient, and highly adaptable manufacturing and production environments. This work primarily focuses on electronic design automation (EDA) from the development of tuning knobs for enhanced adaptivity, through the advanced designing of extrinsic optimization techniques, culminating in the seamless integration of these methodologies on hardware specifically dedicated to the assessment and optimization of the chip. The implementation of a chip performance assessment unit on this hardware is crucial for enabling the development of self-X properties in SSES. The reconfigurable, fully differential indirect current-feedback instrumentation amplifier (CFIA) is intrinsically optimized using a single test sinusoidal signal stimulus and measures the total harmonic distortion (THD) at the output. Additionally, a power-monitoring module is integrated into the CFIA circuit to assess power consumption, ensuring a power-efficient and reliable configuration. The implemented assessment unit effectively manages data acquisition, THD computation via FFT, and executes an advanced optimization algorithm for dynamic system configuration, facilitating an adaptive and efficient data management and transmission protocol. The design of the architecture has been kept generic to ensure its easy integration with higher-level system designs, enhancing its applicability across diverse technological applications. Preliminary tests conducted on the fabricated chip, using the default configuration pattern from post-layout simulations, revealed an unacceptable performance behavior of the CFIA. Nevertheless, the proposed in-field optimization successfully restored the circuit’s performance, resulting in a robust design that meets the performance achieved in the design phase. This architecture resulted in a 34% 34\% increase in power efficiency while achieving a THD value of 72 -72 dB with a 2Vpp 2V_{p-p} differential input signal at 1 MHz. Dynamic intrinsic optimization across a temperature range of 20C -20^\circ C to 40C 40^\circ C and a 25% 25\% reduction in supply voltage revealed the system's adaptability to process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations. A novel experience replay particle swarm optimization (ERPSO) algorithm, embedded on Red Pitaya FPGA boards, acts as an AI agent for intrinsic in-field optimization of the CFIA. The proposed ERPSO algorithm expands the classical PSO selection process with an experience replay buffer (ERB) to reduce the likelihood of trapping in local minima. The ERB archives previously visited global best particles and uses an adaptive epsilon greedy method in velocity updating. The ERPSO algorithm's performance is verified using eight popular benchmarking functions. The evaluation of robust optimization for CFIA, using surrogate-based and archive-based methodologies, is conducted through simulation-based results due to timing constraints. Benchmark functions and direct application to CFIA highlighted this method's effectiveness in reducing the average expected error (AEE) and improving correlation metrics. This facilitated precise tuning of CFIA to achieve desired performance levels while effectively managing uncertainties and imperfections. An evaluation of filter optimization using reconfigurable non-intrusive sensors provides a comprehensive examination of a novel approach to optimizing filter characteristics, particularly cutoff frequencies, through indirect measurements. The typical indirect measurement approach using regression models for the device under test (DUT) performance prediction is integrated with ERPSO for reconfigurable non-intrusive sensors. This work's novelty lies in optimizing the non-intrusive sensors by copying the DUT's tuning knobs, indirectly optimizing DUT performance without interrupting its operation. In-field optimization is based on low-cost sensor measurements, achieving a 92% 92\% correlation performance metric for regression tasks. The study also presents the filter's dynamic performance under temperature variations, illustrating robustness. The filter recalibrates with a maximum 3% 3\% discrepancy from intended cutoff frequencies, emphasizing its resilience and optimization strategy. A reinforcement learning approach further addressed layout-induced deviations, reducing the need for extensive physical measurements and adapting to fabricated chips. The practical application of a reconfigurable analog front-end with self-X properties for the tunnel magneto-resistance (TMR) sensor, provided by Sensitec, demonstrates seamless integration with higher system hierarchies. Configuration bits derived from the optimization algorithm highlight the integration of theoretical and algorithmic progress with practical implementation. The research successfully demonstrates the potential of AI and machine learning to enhance the autonomy and optimization of SSES. Future work will focus on uninterrupted optimization processes, such as implementing real-time operating systems (RTOS) or time-triggered embedded systems (TTES) to interleave calibration and measurement tasks. Additionally, further investigations will explore the intrinsic evaluation of non-intrusive sensor-based indirect measurement techniques and the application of reinforcement learning methods to reduce the need for extensive physical measurements, thus enhancing the efficiency and robustness of smart sensory electronic systems. These future directions aim to provide more robust, adaptable, and cost-effective solutions for next-generation industrial applications.

Influence of the particle morphology on the spray characteristics in low-pressure cold gas process

    Get PDF
This study investigates the influence of particle morphology on spray characteristics in low-pressure cold gas spraying (LPCGS) by analyzing three copper powders with distinct shapes and microstructures. A comprehensive morphology analysis was conducted using both 2D and 3D imaging techniques. Light microscopy combined with image processing quantified particle circularity in 2D projections, while X-ray micro-computed tomography (µCT) enabled precise 3D reconstructions to determine sphericity, surface area, and volume distributions. The results showed significant variations in the particle morphology of the investigated feedstock copper powders, with irregularly shaped particles exhibiting lower circularity and sphericity compared to more spherical feedstocks. These morphological differences had a direct impact on the particle velocity distributions and spatial dispersion within the spray jet, as measured by high-speed particle image velocimetry. Irregular particles experienced stronger acceleration and exhibited a more focused spray dispersion, whereas spherical particles reached lower maximum velocities and showed a wider dispersion in the jet. These findings highlight the critical role of particle morphology in optimization of cold spray processes for advanced coating and additive manufacturing applications

    Salicylic acid: new pathways arising?

    Get PDF
While the role of salicylic acid (SA) for plant immunity has been investigated for decades, its function in regulating plant growth and development has only come into focus recently. Several studies indicate that SA – auxin crosstalk plays an important role in mediating SA-induced effects. However, not all findings can be explained by this crosstalk alone and SA-specific effects on intracellular organization have been reported such as inhibition of endocytosis and changes of vacuolar pH and morphology. Notably, several SA-related functions seem to be independent of the SA receptors Nonexpressor of Pathogenesis- Related genes (NPRs). This review summarizes the effects of SA on intracellular organization and predicts the existence of as yet unknown signaling pathways to explain the current findings. We provide a short general introduction including SA biosynthesis and SA signaling and address how NPR-independent intracellular changes necessitate specific signaling to regulate growth and development
