Understanding Higher Education EFL Learners’ Motivation in Southeast Asia Context: A Systematic Literature Review

Motivation is regarded as one of the major factors in language learning. Therefore, it is very important for teachers to recognize and foster individual students’ motivation as well as identify and respond to their concerns. This systematic literature review study aimed to portray students’ motivational level, orientation, and factors that are dominantly affecting motivation among higher education students in the Southeast Asia context. There are two stages comprised in this study—selecting the pool of review studies and discussing the outcomes of the review. Having thorough sorting and eliminating irrelevant and duplicate articles from three databases (Sciencedirect, ProQuest and ERIC), 15 articles derived from Indonesia, Thailand and East Timor were finally selected. This study, then, found that students’ motivational levels were generally high, and they were more extrinsically than intrinsically motivated, in which most students learn English for their future better job (careers). It was reported that the key factors motivated students in the learning process were friends, and teachers (personality, competence, teaching method), and somehow female students have a different motivational level and orientation from male students. Hence, the English teachers are suggested to reconsider using a method or anything which can improve students’ motivation for both female and male students, both extrinsically and intrinsically. further studies are recommended to include a broader search database and also area part of countries

Modern Javanese Canned Gudeg Viewed from Cultural, Food Safety, and Visual Design Perspectives

Gudeg, a traditional culinary dish from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is prepared by cooking young jackfruit with coconut milk and spices. It is commonly served with rice, eggs, chicken, and sambal goreng krecek, which is a spicy blended chili cooked with savory edible soft cowhide. Gudeg is interesting to discuss as it holds a rich history and is a cultural legacy that has been passed down through generations in Indonesia. Over time, gudeg producers have introduced an innovation of providing a visually attractive label on canned packages.  This gives reason for research on gudeg using a cultural, food safety, and visual design perspective. The research found that culturally gudeg was the staple for the Mataram Kingdom army to survive the battle against enemies who wanted to colonialize the area. Next, the food safety test revealed that canned Gudeg Bagong had a microbial count of 1.3 x 10-1 CFU/ml, while canned Gudeg Andrawina Loka had a count of 2.4 x 10-2 CFU/ml. The findings demonstrated that the microbiological analysis met the standards set by Ministry of Health Regulation No. 416/MENKES/PER/IX/1990 and Indonesian Food and Drug Authority Regulation No. HK.00.06.1.S2.4011. Lastly, through visual design research, it was found among others that local and foreign tourists prefer to see the actual photo display of gudeg set with its jackfruit, egg, chicken, and sambal goreng krecek contents

Female Agency through Border-Crossing and Transformation in Native American Women’s Poems

This paper analyzes two poems by indigenous women authors from America, Karenne Wood and Joy Harjo, centering on the deer image, “Deer Woman” and “Deer Dancer,” respectively. The deer image has certain significance for these authors and their communities, because deer were hunted to provide sustenance for their survival. In certain cases, in these communities, boundaries between the deer and the human could not be easily ascertained. The transformation of the deer into the human and vice-versa underscores the fluid boundaries of human relationships with other beings, as well as the power and agency that emanate from such transformation. Through a close reading of the two poems, analysis reveals a conception of female agency that centers on willing transformation and aims for complete union with another in the interest of community survival and well-being. These native women authors’ poetic representations of deer serve as a critique of female agency, which is usually and primarily defined from the perspective of Western feminists

This study provides a comprehensive overview of current publication patterns in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). In this research, the trends investigated are publication and citation growth, researcher’s productivity, and the most impactful publications. In addition to the publication trends, network visualizations of the terms co-occurrence and co-authorship are also presented in this research. A quantitative descriptive method with bibliometric analysis is employed as the research design of this research. The data analyzed are 6333 journal articles related to EFL published in 2011-2021. All of the data are obtained from the Scopus database. From the analysis using Scopus and Microsoft Excel, it was found that the highest publication growth in percent is in 2012 with a 98,6% of publication increase, and the highest publication growth in number is in 2020 with a total of 310 more publications compared to the previous year. Using the same tools, the researchers also found that the most productive author is Karim Sadeghi with 10 publications, and the most cited publication is an article titled 'English achievement and student motivation in CLIL and EFL settings' by David Lasagabaster. Meanwhile, from the network visualizations using VOSviewer, the researchers concluded that there are two major research themes in EFL, namely pedagogy and affective factors in learning, and the most collaborative author based on the co-authorship analysis is Ehsan Namaziandost

Unpacking the Layers: Understanding The Multifaceted Nature of L2 Learning Complexity

The impact of age on language learning is often explained by various factors such as neural mechanisms, biological influences, and learning conditions. This study is a literature review that aims to analyze age influences based on various sources, including journals, books, and proceedings. The study argues that there is a cognitive mechanism known as the language defense mechanism that acts as a barrier to maintain the integrity of L1 information, leading to challenges in acquiring L2 for adults. This defense mechanism strengthens as L1 knowledge increases, making it more difficult to learn L2. The concept of the defense mechanism provides another perspective on models such as fossilization, language interference, the impact of age, and bilingualism in the context of learning new languages

Print Ads and Sexist Appeal: The Portrayal of Women in American Men’s Apparel Ads From The 1950s-1970s

    No full text
Postwar American society developed severe views on how men and women should behave, with family structure being the best way to grow the nation. In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, print ads depicted women as housewives, feminine, self-conscious, and eager to please their spouses. Print ads deceived women by persuading them that appearance and seductive attractiveness in real life were what counted. Women's bodies became objects, which might desensitize them and normalize sexism. The American male-dominated culture shapes and reflects print ads' portrayals of women. American print ads have shaped society by leveraging real-world symbols to convince consumers that the products they see are part of their lives. This research is methodically analyzed using the feminist theory of Betty Friedan (1963) and the gender theory of Erving Goffman (1979) to examine how women are portrayed and how sexism is depicted in 30 selected American men’s apparel print ads from the 1950s–1970s. The results found that American print ads developed a sense of pride in women’s efforts to maintain the house or prioritize the requirements of their partner. Women have been portrayed as everything from incompetent to sexual objects. They expected to find fulfillment in a society of masculine dominance
