Language changes over time due to social and cultural factors. These changes are evident through language varieties such as standard and non-standard languages, dialects, accents, and registers. This research focuses on one type of language variation, namely slang. Slang words show that language is constantly changing. For example, there are many new slang words that emerge and old ones that are no longer used or replaced. Slang also reflects people’s creativity because through slang we can see how someone can be very creative in making new words or modifying existing words. This research aims to identify the slang words that appear in the comments section of the TikTok during June to December 2022 and analyze the word formation process of each slang found. The authors used the qualitative descriptive method in order to present the data thoroughly. This study found that there were 39 slang words that appeared repeatedly and there were six most common word formation processes found in TikTok comments, namely blending, clipping, borrowing, acronym, affixation, and multiple processes. The most frequent processes are blending and clipping. The least frequent word formation processes are affixation and borrowing

Beyond the Darkness: Exploring the Myth of Solar Eclipse in The Total Solar Eclipse of Nestor Lopez and Every Soul A Star

Children's literature often serves as a tool for conveying complex phenomena, and one such phenomenon is the solar eclipse. While lunar eclipses have been a recurring theme in children's literature, solar eclipses have received less attention in this context. Nevertheless, in the wake of the remarkable total solar eclipse in the United States in 2017, certain children's literary works have been popular because of the use of the solar eclipse as a central theme. Noteworthy examples include The Total Solar Eclipse of Nestor Lopez by Andrea Cuevas and Every Soul A Star by Wendy Mass, both narrate tales set against the backdrop of a solar eclipse. This study examines the role played by the solar eclipse in character development and the incorporation of mythical elements within these selected novels by employing David Leeming's theory of myth, through a close reading. This study demonstrates how the solar eclipse symbolizes character growth, fostering enhanced self-confidence and self-acceptance, thereby reflecting the mythological notion that solar eclipses possess transformative potential. Furthermore, these novels encompass myths such as the act of biting during a solar eclipse, the transformation, the rituals during the eclipse, and the euphoria of the solar eclipse. However, this study also reveals instances of misinterpretation of these myths, thereby highlighting potential issues of cultural appropriation, which may contribute to children's misunderstanding.Children's literature often serves as a tool for conveying complex phenomena, and one such phenomenon is the solar eclipse. Full text link
Considering the great responsibility and the role of teachers as educators, teachers must have professional competence and determination to reach the projected educational goal. This competence should be developed continuously by the teachers themselves and/or facilitated by the principal as the leader in the school. Therefore, good leadership is required to guide and direct the teachers as should. The principal’s leadership quality can be seen in the success of the school he/she leads. This study examines the school principal’s leadership and English teachers’ professionalism at a private A-accredited high school in Palembang. A qualitative method in case study design was utilized in this study. A school principal, a vice-principal, and three teachers of English were involved as the participants of the study. The data were collected through interviews and observations and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that the school principal’s leadership plays a significant role in enhancing teachers’ English professionalism. The principal’s leadership styles are transformational and participative, which are characterized by vision articulation, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. The study also found that teachers of English at this school are highly professional. They have a strong commitment to their teaching profession and are constantly striving to improve their teaching skills and knowledge

Semiotic Analysis of Bias Language in Online News: The Case of the Indonesian Teacher Marketplace Policy

News discourse is often regarded as an objective and formal form of discourse. However, the definition of news is rather elusive. News must be something extraordinary and captivating enough to attract public attention. This research discusses a semiotic analysis of online news, specifically on Beritasatu.com, concerning the new policy for teachers in Indonesia, known as the Teacher Marketplace, proposed by the Minister of Education, Nadiem Makarim. This policy, an online database of teachers that allows schools to immediately choose available teachers, was perceived as an insult to the teaching profession. Consequently, social media platforms such as online news pages, TikTok, Instagram, and others saw online demonstrations suggesting that the government is demeaning teachers by ‘selling’ them in an online database. This research focuses on the headlines, lexical choices, language use, typography, and photography in 15 news articles related to the Teacher Marketplace on Beritasatu.com. Using the interactive model analysis to analyze the data, the results revealed 15 harsh headlines, 27 harsh lexical choices, 18 instances of unpleasant language, 10 satirical photographs, and standard typography across the online news. These findings highlight the need for news readers to be more aware of harsh language in certain online news platforms

An SFL Analysis of Dialogues in Elementary EFL Textbooks

Textbooks play a vital role in language instruction. The study aims to examine the three metafunctions of language based on the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory. As such, a descriptive qualitative approach along with content analysis is employed to examine dialogues that were selected conveniently from two elementary EFL textbooks. The findings indicate that the relational process is the most frequent process type indicating the ideational function of the two textbooks. For the sake of interpersonal function, declarative sentences are mostly utilized. Meanwhile, the textual function is mostly reflected by the T (Thing) and DT (Deictic + Thing) nominal group pattern. These findings have pedagogical implications for teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL), particularly for elementary school students; providing simple language patterns that help students build a foundational vocabulary and understanding of grammar for proficient communication. The theoretical implication of the findings is the importance of scaffolded learning that helps learners grasp basic linguistic concepts before moving on to more complex and dynamic language us

Vocational English Lecturers’ Professional Identity: A Closer Look to the Six Domains

The growing research on teachers’ identity focused mostly on pre-service teachers, beginning teachers, and teachers at the secondary level. Research on teacher identity in the tertiary context has indeed been carried out, however, not much research has focused on the identity of English lecturers in vocational institutions, which arguably face more challenges compared to non-vocational counterparts. Teachers’ identity impacts the teaching process, in the way teachers see themselves, value their roles, and what their beliefs about teaching. These things significantly influence how they approach their work in the classroom. Aiming to fill in the gaps and add to the literature regarding the identity of vocational lecturers, this study seeks to answer three questions: (1) How do vocational English lecturers define their identities related to the six domains namely self-image, motivation, commitment, self-efficacy, task perception, job satisfaction, of teacher identity? (2) What are the things that cause the vocational English lecturer to define their identity, based on the six domains? (3) What are the advantages of knowing the teachers’ identity regarding the challenges that the vocational English lecturers face in their professional lives? The research used the purposive sampling method in qualitative research and was based on the saturation principle to determine the number of research participants. Using questionnaires and interviews with three participants as well as three-stage coding techniques and inductive analysis, this research found various positive identities within all six domains of teacher identity. These identities stem from both personal and contextual factors. Despite these promising findings, vocational English lecturers encounter certain challenges, notably with students who often have limited academic abilities, resulting in feelings of inadequacy, and a lack of enthusiasm for the English learning process

English for arts and design is a vocational English developed to facilitate non-English students, studying visual design communication. The goal of the course is to enable the students to use English and communicate effectively in the context of visual design business. To achieve this learning goal, the lecturer should design a meaningful and effective course design.  Among various approaches to ESP course design, this article describes the text-based approach. Because the students are from a non-English department, this strategy will help them learn English more effectively. When the lecturer uses this approach, they provide students with sufficient scaffolding. These scaffolding are useful for assisting students to gain confidence in using English. Gradually, their learning goals can be achieved effectively.  Thus, this article aims to describe how to design an effective ESP course for Visual Design Communication students and report its implementation in the classroom. This paper will hopefully provide some practical insights in designing ESP courses and in using text-based approach  in ESP classrooms

Exploring Moral Values: Readers’ Responses to the Holocaust in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

The Holocaust is one of the dark events in history that must be remembered. There are many works in contemporary culture or even literature that apply the Holocaust theme. Unfortunately, these works make the sensitive part of this dark history deviate from the truth, which is crucial for the generation who learn about the Holocaust. Therefore, this research examined a novel with a holocaust theme titled The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. This novel is one of the novels that has become a reference for many people who want to know about the Holocaust and has even been used as learning material for young students yet received many harsh criticisms such as historical inaccuracy even though this novel is considered historical fiction. Thus, it is necessary to study this novel further in order not to mislead the readers. This research will examine readers' reviews on the GoodReads online platform. Because now is the digital era, many people are doing online reading activities and writing reviews on this platform. Analyzing reader reviews also determines the quality of the novel itself. This research will also use the transactional reader response theory by Louise Rosenblatt. Therefore, it shows how changes in meaning occur between the text and the reader's perception
