RELIGION, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIAL CHANGE: REPRESENTATIONS OF MUSLIM WORLD IN ACADEMIC ANALYSES OF THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE ARAB SPRING
This article deconstructs the dominant constructions and portrayals of the Muslim world in literature on social media and civic engagement in relation to the Arab Spring. A critical reading of literature on social media and ‘Arab Spring’ shows that analyses by Western scholars and commentators are still grounded in ‘modernist dualism’ and orientalist understandings. The article starts by tracing the history of technology to argue that analyses of social media’s educational and civic potential within the Western context in general, is continuation of arguments about earlier technologies in relation to societal development. However, when it comes to analyzing social media and civic engagement particularly in the Muslim world this tendency gets muddled with another well-established trend, that of Orientalism. The overall impact of this tendency results in restricting majority of arguments within the essentialists/determinists paradigm. Such analyses essentialize the technological aspects of social media as universal and constitute the West as civilized, democratic, multicultural, and progressive. On the other hand Muslim world is represented as uncivilized, undemocratic, uncultured, and chained in past traditions. Thus, there is a need for a nuanced understanding of the relationship between the social media and civic engagement in the Muslim world, which can be conceptualized by framing the issues within a postcolonial critique of neoliberal globalization. INTEGRASI KEILMUAN DALAM PENGEMBANGAN KURIKULUM DI UIN SE-INDONESIA: Evaluasi Penerapan Integrasi Keilmuan UIN dalam Kurikulum dan Proses Pembelajaran
Abstract: This research is based on the reasoning that transformation of IAIN to UIN can not release the expectation to do the integration of science and shake off dichotomy both Islam and science. The dichotomous of Islam and science appear in cosequence of the differences at the level of ontological, epistemological and axiological in religious sciences (Islam) and general sciences. In response to preliminary research and findings with respect to science integration in UIN, researchers assume to do comprehensive research to find out at analyzing the implementation of the integration of science in UIN throughout Indonesia, especially in the context of curriculum design and the learning process. PEMBELAJARAN KIMIA MELALUI METODE EKSPERIMEN BERBASIS LINGKUNGAN ALAM SEKITAR DITINJAU DALAM PERSPEKTIF ISLAM
This paper aims at describing teaching and learning activities in chemistry lesson through environmental-based (contextual-based) experiments that are viewed from the perspective of Islam. Islam teaches its followers to study their environment in order to find solution for many problems. One of the problems posed by chemistry teachers with regards to conducting chemistry experiments is the lack of laboratory equipments. In fact, if environment has been studied well, Islam has provided anything we need including the need to conduct chemistry experiment. Verses in Quran, especially al-Baqarah: 185, an-Nisa: 28, al-Hajj: 78, and Hud: 61 implied that our environment provides more than enough for us to do experiments. The problem of not doing the experiments was that because teachers are not studying their environment well enough. This paper describes some ideas in which environment helps chemistry teachers to be able to conduct chemistry experiments without losing the chemistry concept. DOI: 10.15408/tjems.v1i2.126
