Development and Investigations of a Fiber Optic Technique for On-line Monitoring of the Quality of Polish of Rice
Optical sensing techniques are well known for precise and non-intrusive measurements. With the availability of optical fibers and fiber optic components in recent years, fiber optics based sensing has emerged as a rapidly growing field with several potential benefits over the conventional electrical and electronic sensors. Intensity modulation based fiber optic sensors are conceptually simple, ruggedised and cost-effective as they can be implemented using less expensive multimode fibers and their assemblies and other components. Experimental investigations have been carried out and a reflectance modulation based fiber optic technique developed for on-line monitoring the quality of polish/whiteness of rice. The paper discusses the aspects of design, implementation & characteristic investigations of the said technique for monitoring the quality of polish of rice and highlights its salient technical feature
Digital Cereal Grain Analyzer
It is a proven fact that certain constituents absorb light energy at specific wavelengths. By bombarding a sample with a very narrow band at a specific wavelength of NIR light, constituents of a sample can be predicted. The light energy absorbed by the samples is inversely, proportional to the reflected light. A computer controls the system, uses Near Infrared (NIR) technology and statistical mathematical treatment to predict the percent of constituent concentration of moisture, oil and protein within a sample The system consists of modular electronics, NIR source, NIR filters and detectors, which automatically scan different wavelengths and thus allow displaying, the percentage contents within a sample The software for the system has been developed using advanced GU1 tools (Visual C++) to make it user friendly and compatible with the existing database applications. The paper discusses the modular design of the system, electronic circuits for signal processing, data acquisition & treatmen
Implementation of Labview based Vibration Monitoring System for Turbine Generator Set in Thermal Power Plants
The paper describes a data acquisition system using Labview software for acquiring data from various transducers namely accelerometers, velocity pickups, proximity probes and other sensors mounted at various locations of a TG (Turbine Generator) 210 MW set, in thermal power plants. Data from transducers can be acquired on different channels and various parameters can be set for each channel like channel number, channel name, sensitivity units and scan rate. Delay between acquisitions can also be set. Data can be stored in the programmable files, containing complete header information. Data can also be acquired continuously. Powerful and convenient data acquisition, storage and retrieval mechanisms ensure that desired data will be available whenever required
Effects of tool feed rate in single point diamond turning of aluminium-6061 alloy
During single point diamond turning, the effects of tool feed rate on surface figure and finish of aluminium-606 alloy are evaluated. The studies arc conducted on 60 mm diameter optical flat surfaces. Twenty-six specimensare diamond turned for varying tool feed rates (0.3 μm/rev to 30.0 μm/rev) keeping all the other machining parameters constant. The aluminium surfaces thus machined, show. a typical roughness of 15 nm, and surface figure of better than a half wave peak-to-valley (PV) for optimum tool feed rate. The tool feed rate between of 1.5-8.0 μm/rev is found to be optimum for a given set of other machining parameters to get the acceptable surface figure: as well as roughness values. An empirical formula with best fit has been formulated to find out the practical roughness achievable for the machining conditions under study
Development of a Photometric System for Continuous Flow Analysis
Most chemical analyses carried out in a clinical laboratory are colorimetric. An improved photometric system is described where a tungsten lamp is the light source, a photo-diode is the detector and a microcontroller 8051 is used for processing and displaying absorbances. The performance characteristics of the instrument are reported. The parameters investigated are photometric linearity, precision and instrumental drif
Effect of Calcination Temperature on Sensitivity of Tin Oxide Thin Film
This paper describes the effect of calcination temperature on the gas sensitive properties of nanocrystalline tin oxide thin film. Nanocrystalline SnO2 thin films were prepared by sol-gel method using inorganic salt as aprecursor material. Influence of calcination temperature was evaluated on the structural morphology and electrical characteristic of the film prepared by spin coating method. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed that with increasing calcination temperature the uniformity of the film increased. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements showed that the grain size increased from ∼20 to 80 nm as the calcination temperature was increased from 100 to 600"C. In general, the preferred direction of smaller grain size is (110). At lower calcination temperatures, both the SnO2 peak and the SnO peaks were seen on XRD but only SnO2 peaks were observed at higher temperatures. The sensitivity of the tin oxide thin film to 500 ppm of alcohol vapors at the substrate temperature of 350"C was also grain size dependent. The sensitivity increased with decrease in grain size
Multi-element analysis of soil from the northwestern region of India by neutron activation, analysis using the single comparator method with special reference to selenium toxicity
The single comparator (k0) instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was employed to determine the elemental composition of soil from the north-western region of India. The radiometric assay was carried out using high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. Seventeen elements were detected including selenium whose concentration was found to be in the range of 1.02 to 6.79 mg/g
Design and development of a unique drop sensing unit for infusion pump.
In the present set-up the precise assembly of drop sensor unit has three IR-LED/detector pairs placed at different planes across drip chamber to detect the falling drop. The prismatic effects due to drops sticking to the walls in front of one pair of transmitter/detector is compensated by other two pairs. This increases a reliability and dependability of the overall system. The unit can accommodate variable sizes of drip chambers available in the market. Details of the above unit are given and the overall performance improvement due to the present device are also discussed
Characterisation and design considerations of a radio frequency glow discharge spectral, source for solid material analysis
This paper reports on the design and fabrication of a radio frequency (rf, 13.56 MHz) powered glow discharge source and its characterization for analytical atomic spectroscopy for solid sample analysis. The most attracting feature of rf coupling is its capability to sputter atomize conductive as well as non-conducive solid materials. The glow discharge lamp described here works under obstructed abnormal discharge condition in which the sample acts as a cathode. The fundamental processes occurring in rf powered glow discharges have been described for its characterization for direct solids elemental analysis. The discharge from the cathode surface, which is in contact with a water-cooled jacket, is observed side-on. The anode orifice diameter has been kept at 6 mm. In order to optimize the lamp performance the effect of discharge power, pressure, and dc self-bias potential, etc. on the emission intensity of copper spectral line (324.7 nm) have been studied
Alcohol sensing of tin oxide thin film prepared by sol-gel process
The present paper describes the alcohol sensing characteristics of spin coated SnO2
thin film
deposited by using sol–gel process. The sensitivity of the film was measured at different temperatures and
different concentrations of alcohol at ppm level. Alcohol detection result shows peak sensitivity at 623 K. The
variation of sensitivity and ethanol concentration has shown a linear relationship up to 1150 ppm and after
that it saturates. The response time measurement of the sensor was also observed and it was found that
the response time is 30 sec. The results obtained favour the sol–gel process as a low cost method for the
preparation of thin films with a high sensing characteristi
