Refractive index and concentration sensing of solutions using mechanically induced long period grating (LPG) pair
We demonstrate the use of a pair of mechanically induced long period gratings (LPGs) for sensing the refractive index and concentration of liquids for which NaCl solutions of different concentrations and standard refractive index liquids are studied. The effect of varying the refractive index and∕or concentration is reflected in changing output power loss values at resonance wavelengths. For a concentration change from 5 to 20 g per 100 ml, the maximum variation detected in optical output power is 20 pW, while for a refractive index variation from 1.446 to 1.458, it is 11 pW. These studies are quite useful for chemical, pharmaceutical, biological, and process control sensing applications
Design of high power pump source of eye safe laser for geo-scientific application.
The design consideration of high power diode laser at wavelength of 980 nm as pump source for erbium doped glass eye safe laser at wavelength 1.54 m is presented here. The design of high power laser requires precise control of waveguide dimensions, material and doping profile of layers. The maximum optical power is proportional to transverse optical spot size. The transverse optical spot size and threshold current density have been calculated with transverse waveguide thickness. The effect of current spreading on threshold current density is calculated. The geo-scientific application of eye safe laser is also presented
Fiber Bragg grating writing using phase mask technology
Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) are novel components of communication and sensors. The technique commonly employed for production of FBGs involves exposure of photosensitive germanosilicate fibre cores to intense excimer laser radiation through an optical phase mask located in close proximity of the fibre. FBGs were written using this technique in two different fibre samples and their strain and temperature sensing characteristics were investigated. The paper describes the techniques used for fabrication and their characteristic studies
DNA and quantum based algorithms for VLSI circuits testing, Natural Computing
Testing of VLSI circuits is still a NP hard problem. Existing conventional methods are unable to achieve the required breakthrough in terms of complexity, time and cost. This paper deals with testing the VLSI circuits using natural computing methods. Two prototypical algorithms named as DATPG and QATPG are developed utilizing the properties of DNA computing and Quantum computing, respectively. The effectiveness of these algorithms in terms of result quality, CPU requirements, fault detection and number of iterations is experimentally compared with some of existing classical approaches like exhaustive search and Genetic algorithms, etc. The algorithms developed are so efficient that they require only √ N (where N is the total number of vectors) iterations to find the desired test vector whereas in classical computing, it takes N/2 iterations. The extendibility of new approach enables users to easily find out the test vector from VLSI circuits and can be adept for testing the VLSI chips
Design and implementation of controlled drug infusion system.
An inexpensive controlled drug infusion system based around 80C85 microprocessor with RAM, EPROM and peripheral interface devices is developed. In this system, the drop rate selection is done by BCD thumb wheel switches from 1 to 99 drops/min, LCD display is used for displaying the parameters settings, number of drops infused and various alarms messages for patient safety and unique drop sensing assembly is incorporated for accurate detection of falling drops in drip chamber. The prototype has been tested successfully on neonates
IT for management of agricultural resources and development
In India an awareness needs to be created in the farming sector for the market support. direct payments and other support that can be made available in Implementing various schemes to manage healthy crop production, post harvesting and other related parameters by individual farmers through IT. The farmers and their Panchayats need to recognize and understand the important role of Information Technology. It shall enable them to have various kinds of support at the rural level. This paper defines IT in agriculture as a management strategy that uses information technologies to bring data from multiple sources to bear on decisions associated with crop production. Precision agriculture has three components: capture of data at an appropriate scale and frequency, interpretation and analysis of that data, and implementation of a management response at an appropriate scale and time
Development of a Fiber Optic based System to Monitor Landslide Activity
Optical Time Division Reflectometery (OTDR) was originally developed to detect breaks/ losses in optical fiber transmission cables. Its use for monitoring land mass deformation has not been exploited so far. An experimental set up of a Fiber Optic System using OTDR to Monitor Landslide Activity was realised demonstrating this capability. The feasibility study used in an open configuration wherein an OTDR was used for interrogating the optical fiber subjected to a physically simulated micro-bending likely to be caused by landslide activity Distance estimations of micro-bend locations derived from the OTDR traces so obtained, were analysed using serial interface for the Computer and Tek FMTAP software. These were compared with actual physical distances. The paper reports the salient features, scope, operating principle, and details of the experimental set-up of a proposed Fiber Optic System to Monitor Landslide Activity. Economic advantages of the proposed system over the traditional inclinometer method include: no need to physically visit the site for collection of data, inexpensive, less time consuming, easy installation, disposable cable, no need to clean debris from the inclinometer hole before taking measurements; and ability of remote monitoring at multiple locations. The application of the OTDR techniques employing optical fiber lor sensing landslide activity, its further refinement/modifications for remote monitoring are also discussed
