Flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams using fabric reinforced Alkali-Activated Slag matrix

    Get PDF
Old Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings are facing different degrees of structural deterioration and require proper strengthening to enhance their structural performance as well as to extend their life span. Fabric reinforced Alkali-Activated Slag (AAS) matrix is proposed to strengthen RC beams in this study. Seven RC beams with and without strengthening were prepared and tested under four-point bending. Test results indicate that use of AAS matrix as replacement for conventional cement-based matrix can change the failure mode of the strengthened beams from end-debonding of strengthening layer to slippage combined with rupture of fabric. The AAS-based strengthening strategy is able to enhance the loading capacity and flexural stiffness of RC beams as well as to reduce the strain of tensile reinforcements. Except the specimens failed in the premature debonding, increasing the fabric amount in the strengthening scheme improves the loading capacity of beams. In an optimal case, the yielding and ultimate loads of the strengthened beams are enhanced by 22.2% and 26.4%, respectively. Moreover, an analytical model was developed to predict the characteristic loads of the fabric reinforced AAS matrix strengthened beams. It shows that the analytical model could overestimate the yielding and ultimate loads of the strengthened beams, probably due to slippage and reduced synergistic effect of fabric bundles in the strengthening system. Based on that, two efficiency factors of 0.35 and 0.25, taking account of the area of effective fabric, are obtained and recommended to estimate the yielding and ultimate loads of fabric reinforced AAS matrix-strengthened beams, respectively

Addressing challenges of urban water management in Chinese sponge cities via nature-based solutions

    Get PDF
Urban flooding has become a serious issue in most Chinese cities due to rapid urbanization and extreme weather, as evidenced by severe events in Beijing (2012), Ningbo (2013), Guangzhou (2015), Wuhan (2016), Shenzhen (2019), and Chongqing (2020). The Chinese “Sponge City Program” (SCP), initiated in 2013 and adopted by 30 pilot cities, is developing solutions to manage urban flood risk, purify stormwater, and provide water storage opportunities for future usage. Emerging challenges to the continued implementation of Sponge Cities include (1) uncertainty regarding future hydrological conditions related to climate change projections, which complicates urban planning and designing infrastructure that will be fit for purpose over its intended operating life, and (2) the competing priorities of stakeholders and their reluctance to make trade-offs, which obstruct future investment in the SCP. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) is an umbrella concept that emerged from Europe, which encourages the holistic idea of considering wider options that combine “Blue–Green” practices with traditional engineering to deliver “integrated systems of Blue–Green–Grey infrastructure”. NBS includes interventions making use of natural processes and ecosystem services for functional purposes, and this could help to improve current pilot SCP practices. This manuscript reviews the development of the SCP, focusing on its construction and design aspects, and discusses how approaches using NBS could be included in the SCP to tackle not only urban water challenges but also a wide range of social and environmental challenges, including human health, pollution (via nutrients, metals, sediments, plastics, etc.), flood risk, and biodiversity

Synthesis of single-crystal La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 freestanding films with different crystal-orientation

    Get PDF
We report the synthesis of single-crystal La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) freestanding films with different crystal orientations. By using pulsed laser deposition, water soluble perovskite-like sacrificial layers Sr3Al2O6 (SAO) followed by LSMO films are grown on differently oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Freestanding LSMO films with different orientations are obtained by etching the SAO in pure water. All the freestanding films show room-temperature ferromagnetism and metallicity, independent of the crystal orientation. Intriguingly, the Curie temperature (TC) of the freestanding films is increased due to strain relaxation after releasing from the substrates. Our results provide an additional degree of freedom to tailor the properties of freestanding perovskite oxide heterostructures by crystal orientation and an opportunity to further integrate different oriented films together

A neural network enhanced volatility component model

    Get PDF
Volatility prediction, a central issue in financial econometrics, attracts increasing attention in the data science literature as advances in computational methods enable us to develop models with great forecasting precision. In this paper, we draw upon both strands of the literature and develop a novel two-component volatility model. The realized volatility is decomposed by a nonparametric filter into long- and short-run components, which are modeled by an artificial neural network and an ARMA process, respectively. We use intraday data on four major exchange rates and a Chinese stock index to construct daily realized volatility and perform out-of-sample evaluation of volatility forecasts generated by our model and well-established alternatives. Empirical results show that our model outperforms alternative models across all statistical metrics and over different forecasting horizons. Furthermore, volatility forecasts from our model offer economic gain to a mean-variance utility investor with higher portfolio returns and Sharpe ratio

States, trends, and future of aquaponics research

    Get PDF
As an environmentally-friendly aquaculture and planting system, aquaponics has attracted attention in various fields, such as fisheries, agriculture, and ecology. The existing review qualitatively described the development and challenges of aquaponics but lacked data support. This study selected 513 related documents (2000-2019) in the Web of Science database (WOS) to mine and quantitatively analyze its text data. The keyword co-occurrence network shows that the current aquaponics research mainly focuses on the system components, wastewater treatment, nutrient management, and system production. Research areas reflect obvious regional characteristics. China, the United States and Europe are dedicated to the application of new technologies, the optimization of system production, and the exploration of multiple roles. At present, the aquaponics development is facing many pressures from management and market. Future research requires more in-depth research in the system construction, nutrient management, and microbial community structure to provide a theoretical basis. Moreover, the identity construction within the conceptual framework of green infrastructure is a research direction worth exploring to solve low social recognition for aquaponics

A recent trend: application of graphene in catalysis

    Get PDF
Graphene, an allotrope of carbon in 2D structure, has revolutionised research, development and application in various disciplines since its successful isolation 16 years ago. The single layer of sp2-hybridised carbon atoms brings with it a string of unrivalled characteristics at a fraction of the price of its competitors, including platinum, gold and silver. More recently, there has been a growing trend in the application of graphene in catalysis, either as metal-free catalysts, composite catalysts or as catalyst supports. The unique and extraordinary properties of graphene have rendered it useful in increasing the reactivity and selectivity of some reactions. Owing to its large surface area, outstanding adsorptivity and high compatibility with various functional groups, graphene is able to provide a whole new level of possibilities and flexibilities to design and synthesise fit-for-purpose graphene-based catalysts for specific applications. This review is focussed on the progress, mechanisms and challenges of graphene application in four main reactions, i.e., oxygen reduction reaction, water splitting, water treatment and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. This review also summarises the advantages and drawbacks of graphene over other commonly used catalysts. Given the inherent nature of graphene, coupled with its recent accelerated advancement in the synthesis and modification processes, it is anticipated that the application of graphene in catalysis will grow exponentially from its current stage of infancy

An introduction to neighborhood sustainability assessment tool (NSAT) study for China from comprehensive analysis of eight Asian tools

    Get PDF
In comparison to city-level and building-level sustainability research, neighborhood-level sustainable urban development is less studied. One of the ways of achieving sustainability at this level is the use of the Neighborhood Sustainability Assessment Tool (NSAT), which focuses on the sustainable urban development of districts, communities, and neighborhoods. NSAT is comprised of urban sustainable indicators and associated points ascribed towards achieving specific urban agendas, called headline sustainability indicators (HSIs) and themes. In China, neighborhood-level sustainability agenda has just been recently established in 2017. Hence, there is an immediate need for NSAT development of multiple cities responding to specific regions of different climate zones in China. As an example, this study utilizes the case of Ningbo City, located in east China, for such NSAT development. This paper provides a comprehensive analytical and comparison study of eight Asian NSATs to highlight compatibilities and extract specific indicators for a new NSAT development for China. The results from this comparative and analytical study, developed through a multidimensional approach of sustainable pathway model (SPM) inform a new NSAT development in a new context. This novel contribution is significant in a context where neighborhood sustainability measures are recently developed. This study serves as the starting point for future research of NSATs in China and other countries

Microstructure evolution and elemental diffusion behavior near the interface of Cr2AlC and single crystal superalloy DD5 at elevated temperatures

    Get PDF
As one of the promising MAX phase materials for high-temperature applications, Cr2AlC is considered as a potential substitution bond coat material in thermal barrier coating systems. In this paper, the microstructure evolution and elemental diffusion behavior near the interface of the diffusion couple composed of Cr2AlC and single crystal superalloy DD5 were investigated at 1100 °C, 1150 °C, and 1200 °C. Elemental interdiffusion between Cr2AlC and DD5 occurs significantly, resulting in the formation of a thick layer of Kirkendall holes after 20 h heat treatment at 1100 °C and higher temperatures. The outward diffusion of Ni into Cr2AlC and the inward diffusion of Al into DD5 alloy causes the formation of β-NiAl matrix embedded with dispersed Cr7C3 phase. Simultaneously, the precipitation of σ-TCP phase and degradation of the γ/γ′ matrix occurs in the alloy. Additionally, TaC, M2C (where M = Ta, W, Cr), and M23C6 (M = Cr, Re, W) compounds are formed near the interface along with the dissolution of σ-TCP phases. It is further found that Al in Cr2AlC exhibits the highest average effective diffusion coefficient among the four dominant diffusing elements. It also displays the lowest diffusion activation energy which is due to its relatively weak Cr-Al and Al-Al bonds

Equivalent phase current harmonic elimination in quadruple three-phase drives based on carrier phase shift method

    Get PDF
Multiphase drives are entering the spotlight of the research community for transportation applications with their high power density and the possibility of high fault tolerance. The multi three-phase drive is one of the main types of multiphase drives that allows for the direct adoption of commercial three-phase converters and high control flexibility. The elimination of high-frequency current harmonics will reduce the flux linkage harmonics, torque ripple, vibration and noise in machine drives. Therefore, this work introduces a new method to the modelling of equivalent phase current in multi three-phase drives with the double integral Fourier analysis method. A new carrier-based pulse-width modulation (CPWM) method is introduced to reduce the equivalent phase current harmonics by applying proper carrier phase angle to each subsystem in the multi three-phase drives. The proposed angles of carrier signals are analyzed for quadruple three-phase drives, and the corresponding experimental results confirm the significance of the proposed phase-shifted CPWM method to eliminate the equivalent phase current harmonics
