Experimental data on water vapour adsorption on silica gel in fully packed and Z-annulus packed beds
Experimental data on water vapour adsorption on silica gel in four packed bed configurations namely fully packed bed (FPB), large annulus packed bed (LAPB), medium annulus packed bed (MAPB) and small annulus packed bed (SAPB) are presented. Raw temperature data from designated mass transfer zones (MTZ) in the packed beds and on their corresponding walls are presented along with data of the inlet and outlet moist air conditions. Pressure transducers installed at the inlet and outlet provided pressure data. The presented data also covers the material properties of the silica gel for adsorption obtained through material testing and analysis in the laboratory.
With detailed experimental methodology and comprehensive material and water vapour adsorption data, this article can help other researchers to validate and verify the performance of their adsorption systems. The material property data presented can also help investigators to use appropriate experimentally determined property values of silica gel in their theoretical studies. Furthermore, this data can serve as a basis of comparison for heat and mass transfer in other experimental adsorption systems
Forecasting tourism recovery amid COVID-19
The profound impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on global tourism activity has rendered forecasts of tourism demand obsolete. Accordingly, scholars have begun to seek the best methods to predict the recovery of tourism from the devastating effects of COVID-19. In this study, econometric and judgmental methods were combined to forecast the possible paths to tourism recovery in Hong Kong. The autoregressive distributed lag-error correction model was used to generate baseline forecasts, and Delphi adjustments based on different recovery scenarios were performed to reflect different levels of severity in terms of the pandemic’s influence. These forecasts were also used to evaluate the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism industry in Hong Kong
On the use of movement-based interaction with smart textiles for emotion regulation
Research from psychology has suggested that body movement may directly activate emotional experiences. Movement-based emotion regulation is the most readily available but often un-derutilized strategy for emotion regulation. This research aims to investigate the emotional ef-fects of movement-based interaction and its sensory feedback mechanisms. To this end, we de-veloped a smart clothing prototype, E-motionWear, which reacts to four movements (elbow flexion/extension, shoulder flexion/extension, open and closed arms, neck flexion/extension), fabric-based detection sensors, and three-movement feedback mechanisms (audio, visual and vibrotactile). An experiment was conducted using a combined qualitative and quantitative ap-proach to collect participants’ objective and subjective emotional feelings. Results indicate that there was no interaction effect between movement and feedback mechanism on the final emo-tional results. Participants preferred vibrotactile and audio feedback rather than visual feedback when performing these four kinds of upper body movements. Shoulder flexion/extension and open-closed arm movements were more effective for improving positive emotion than elbow flexion/extension movements. Participants thought that the E-motionWear prototype were comfortable to wear and brought them new emotional experiences. From these results, a set of guidelines were derived that can help frame the design and use of smart clothing to support us-ers’ emotional regulation
Is foreign direct investment globalization‐induced or a myth? A tale of Africa
Foreign direct investment (FDI) provides many African countries an important source of capital inflow. Despite notable improvements in these capital-scarce countries' economic, political, and social conditions, foreign investors have not considered them viable host locations. Since FDI brings enormous spillovers to its host, some countries have recently institutionalized globalization as the catalyst for reversing the trend. Against this backdrop, we examine the FDI–globalization nexus across 47 African countries for the 1996–2016 period. Using the augmented mean group estimator, the results suggest that FDI in Africa is indeed globalization-induced. Moreover, we find this positive nexus to be driven by the economic dimension of globalization. Overall, we demonstrate the potential of globalization in stimulating an FDI boom in Africa
Does liquidity drive stock market returns? the role of investor risk aversion
In this paper, we explore the relations between liquidity, stock returns, and investor risk aversion as captured by the variance risk premium (VRP). This is motivated by theoretical and empirical evidence in the literature which suggests that investor risk aversion negatively correlates with asset liquidity, and ample empirical evidence documenting liquidity risk premium. We use monthly US data from January 1999 to December 2018 and show that innovations in the VRP Granger-cause stock returns, which in turn drive liquidity. Our findings are consistent with predictions of prior theories and highlight the predictability of the VRP. They also contribute to the on-going debate on the causal relation between stock returns and liquidity. Finally, we explore the channels through which the VRP impacts liquidity and find that the VRP influences market and momentum factors, and that movements in these factors lead to changes in liquidity. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature
Common-mode voltage mitigation of dual three-phase voltage source inverters in a motor drive application
Electric variable speed drives (VSDs) based on two VSDs connected to a multiphase machine are an attractive solution to replace high-power mechanic and hydraulic systems in many sectors of industry and transportation because they present high performance with reduced cost, volume and weight. Among the causes which affect the reliability of dual VSDs, the common-mode current flowing through the machine bearing is an important issue. This paper faces the mitigation of the common-mode current by reducing the common-mode voltage (CMV) generated by the operation of a dual VSD. The CMV reduction is carried out without introducing any extra device and/or passive filtering method. This CMV reduction is performed by applying a specific phase-displacement between the modulation strategies of each single inverter drive. The proposed technique has been evaluated in a down scaled experimental setup in order to test its effectivenes
From eco-urbanism to eco-fusion: an augmented multi-scalar framework in sustainable urbanism
This paper introduces the new concept of “eco-fusion” through an exploratory case study
project. It suggests the importance of multi-scalar practice in the broader field of eco-urbanism.
This study introduces eco-fusion as a multiplexed paradigm, which is then discussed in two different
development models. This paper first highlights the position of “eco” in urbanism by providing a
brief account of key terms and how they relate to one another. It then points out the associations
between eco-fusion and sustainable urban development. Through an exploratory case study example
in China, the practical factors of eco-development are assessed. The study aims to provide
a set of intermediate development stages while maintaining each spatial level’s interface in their
own defined and distinguished contexts. The key objective is to consider integrating the natural
and built environments, which is considered the best practice of eco-development in urbanism.
This study’s findings highlight integrated methods in eco-urbanism and suggest new directions for
eco-planning/eco-design strategies
Mapping the research landscape of nature-based solutions in urbanism
Nature-based solutions (NBS) are an innovative concept that mimics the processes of natural ecosystems, popularized principally in the European Union. With a substantial body of literature amassed since the term’s inception in 2015, there is a need to systematically review existing literature to identify overarching gaps and trends, according to disciplinary focus, geographic scope, and key themes, and direct future research inquiry and policy recommendations. This review consists of bibliometric analysis and thematic analysis for NBS studies in urbanism. NBS studies were found to relate strongly with other concepts of ‘Ecosystem Services’, ‘Green Infrastructure’, ‘Climate Change’, and ‘Risk management and Resilience’, which align with four major thematic goals set by the European Commission. Within NBS scholarship, various sub-themes have emerged, namely, ‘Greening’, ‘Urban Development’, ‘Water’, ‘Wellbeing’, and ‘Governance’. Furthermore, we illustrate that the amount and thematic focus of NBS research have been unevenly distributed worldwide. Analysis of emerging trends shows a recent increase in topics, such as adaptive governance of NBS, and the incorporation of social justice in sustainability transitions. Based on an assessment of extant NBS literature, we offer some recommendations for the future direction of the research fields
Synthesis of dominant plastic microfibre prevalence and pollution control feasibility in Chinese freshwater environments
Microplastic pollution of freshwaters is known to be a great concern in China and these pollutants can be discharged into the coastal environment through fluvial processes, posing threats to the global marine ecosystem. This paper reviewed the literature measuring microplastic pollution in the Chinese freshwater environment and found that microfibres dominate other plastic morphologies in more than 65% of samples collected in surface water, sediments and effluents of wastewater treatment plants and domestic sewers. Current potential sources of microfibre pollution are identified including fishery activities, laundry sewage, and waste textiles according to previous research. Recommendations are offered using the circular economy management framework, such as textile waste reuse and recycling systems in China, for improving current control measures for microplastics in freshwaters
