A comprehensive survey of text classification techniques and their research applications: observational and experimental insights
The exponential growth of textual data presents substantial challenges in management and analysis, notably due to high storage and processing costs. Text classification, a vital aspect of text mining, provides robust solutions by enabling efficient categorization and organization of text data. These techniques allow individuals, researchers, and businesses to derive meaningful patterns and insights from large volumes of text. This survey paper introduces a comprehensive taxonomy specifically designed for text classification based on research fields. The taxonomy is structured into hierarchical levels: research field-based category, research field-based sub-category, methodology-based technique, methodology sub-technique, and research field applications. We employ a dual
evaluation approach: empirical and experimental. Empirically, we assess text classification techniques across four critical criteria. Experimentally, we compare and rank the methodology sub-techniques within the same methodology technique and within the same overall research field sub-category. This structured taxonomy, coupled with thorough evaluations, provides a detailed and nuanced understanding of text classification algorithms and their applications, empowering researchers to make informed decisions based on precise, field-

Constraints on the impact history of the Apollo 16 landing site: implications of soil-like breccia noble gas records
The Apollo 16 regolith breccia sample suite provides a record of lunar regolith formation from the basin-forming epoch (~3.9 Ga) through to a time of declining impactor flux (~2 Ga). These rocks have been characterized into three groups: the “ancient,” “young,” and “soil-like” regolith breccias on the basis of their petrographic characteristics, and, in the case of the “ancient” and “young” regolith breccias, noble gas inventory. This study investigates the as-yet unexamined noble gas records of the “soil-like” regolith breccias to understand more recent regolith evolution processes that occurred at the Apollo 16 landing site. The range of gas concentrations measured for each noble gas in these samples is comparable to those previously reported for the local Apollo 16 soils. The “soil-like” regolith breccias were found to be more gas rich than the gas poor “young” and “ancient” regolith breccias, consistent with them having formed from comparatively mature soil(s). Our results further confirm the scientific value of lunar regolith breccias and bulk regolith samples as probes of the impact history and the space environment of the lunar surface across a wide range of time

Compositional variations in shield-stage volcanism in Fogo, Cape Verde islands
The intraplate oceanic island of Fogo (Cape Verde islands) is in the shield-stage of its evolution. It experienced a major lateral collapse ca. 70 ka ago, after which a sequence of lavas about 2 km thick infilled the collapse scar, with eruptions continuing to the present day. Nearly 100 lavas from before and after the collapse have been sampled and analysed for bulk rock compositions. These lavas have been divided into five Formations (2 pre- collapse and 3 post-collapse), using stratigraphic principles. There is little difference in the major and trace element compositions of pre- and post-collapse lavas, and the main process that gives rise to their diversity is fractional crystallization of observed mineral phases. Pre-collapse lavas show a narrower range of bulk compositions than the post-collapse lavas, but this may be because the sampling strategy avoided these more altered and poorly exposed lavas. A group of high-P2O5 lavas, erupted both before and after the collapse, may have been extensively contaminated by local seamount-stage intrusive carbonatites. A subset of 30 samples was analysed for Sr, Nd and Pb isotope ratios. They show a plume component which has interacted with two contaminants: (1) an increase in 87Sr/86Sr and decrease in 143Nd/144Nd with decreasing MgO, which indicates varying amounts of assimilation of an enriched lithospheric component coupled to fractionation (AFC), and (2) contamination of the more fractionated magmas, without further fractionation, involving the suspected carbonatite contaminant which originates from a more isotopically depleted source. Overall trends of increasing 87Sr/86Sr, and slight decreases in 143Nd/144Nd and all radiogenic Pb isotope ratios, with decreasing age of eruption, indicate a general increase in the assimilated lithospheric component throughout shield-stage activity. However, there is no clear evidence of any change in isotope compositions across the period of the collapse. All Formations show similar wide and overlapping ranges of isotope compositions, regardless of the timescales represented by each Formation. This implies that much short-term variation in the magma sources was superimposed on the overall trend of increasing lithospheric assimilation
Addressing the spatial disparity of COVID-19 vaccination services: a spatial optimisation approach
The COVID-19 pandemic has posed global public health threats. The mass COVID-19 vaccination has continuously played a central role in containing this pandemic. To maximise the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination, equal accessibility to vaccination at different spatial scales is critical. Limited research has investigated the spatial disparity and location optimisation of COVID-19 vaccination services. In this study, we utilised the spatial big data of COVID-19 vaccination sites and used the Gini index to measure the spatial disparity of COVID-19 vaccination service levels. Then, we leveraged spatial optimisation models to enhance the spatial deployment of vaccination sites in the study area of England, UK. The results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed methods. Specifically, the spatial disparity of vaccination services is largely mitigated by the optimised configuration of vaccination sites, as the Gini index decreases from 0.84 (before optimisation) to 0.12 (after optimisation). The suggested vaccination sites would improve the equality of vaccination services and reduce the financial costs of maintaining the vaccination programme, which has implications for public health policymakers. This research illustrates that spatial optimisation could be instrumental in effectively addressing public health crises
The ‘Electoral Presidentialization’ of Silvio Berlusconi and Boris Johnson: chaos, controversy and lost chances
This article tests Poguntke and Webb’s (2005, 2013) theory of ‘electoral presidentialization’ through a comparison of Silvio Berlusconi and Boris Johnson. Johnson and Berlusconi were particular examples of ‘electoral presidentialization’, where dominance lies in power as an election ‘winner’ and ‘mediatised leader’. This is highly contingent and reliant on continuous validation; these two leaders failed to translate electoral ‘autonomy’ into concrete and lasting change.
Utilising the three presidentialization ‘faces’ we identify three crucial weaknesses. First, their own electoral and mediatized focus created a pressure to permanently campaign and generate conflict, driving a ‘politics of spectacle’ that distracted from the politics of governing. Second, the centrality of their personality left them exposed to personal scrutiny, which increasingly focused on corruption, wrongdoing, and irregularities. Third, despite electoral command, their ‘presidentialized’ style rested on fragile party and coalition dynamics, leading to volatility and internal conflict
Modified HT-SPOTi: an antimicrobial susceptibility testing to evaluate formulated therapeutic combinations against bacterial growth and viability
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a serious threat to global health, potentially causing 10 million deaths per year globally by 2050. To tackle AMR, researchers from all around the world have generated a selection of various formulated (viz. nanoparticulate, liposomal) therapeutic combinations to be evaluated for new antimicrobial drug discovery. To meet the urgent need for accelerating new antibacterial drug development, we need rapid but reliable whole-cell assay methods and models to test formulated therapeutic combinations against several pathogens in different in vitro conditions as models of actual infections.
Over the past two decades, high-throughput spot-culture growth inhibition assay (HT-SPOTi) has been demonstrated to be a gold-standard drug susceptibility method for evaluating novel chemotherapeutic entities and existing drugs against various microbes of global concern. Our modified HT-SPOTi method serves the purpose of evaluating drug combinations against Gram-positive/negative microorganisms as well as acid-fast bacilli. The newly developed and modified HT-SPOTi assay builds upon the limitations of our previously published method to incorporate antimicrobial susceptibility testing with formulated therapeutic combinations. The modified HT-SPOTi is compared with a range of other antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods and validated using a library of existing antibiotics as well as formulated therapeutic combinations. The modified HT-SPOTi assay can serve as an efficient and reliable high-throughput drug screening platform to discover new potential antimicrobial molecules, including as part of therapeutic formulations.

Utilitarians, educators, poets: the beginnings of the Westminster Review and the London Mechanics’ Institution
The Westminster Review and the London Mechanics’ Institution were established within months of each other in 1823–24. The prestige periodical, founded on faith in the power of print media to improve lives by the diffusion of knowledge through the social body, and the institution undertaking a more direct and practical route to the same end, were evidently of the same political spirit and historical moment. This article seeks to add texture to the early history of these two initiatives and the radical London milieu that produced them by delving beneath the official documented accounts into the subterranean networks that connected the Westminster and the London Mechanics’ Institution in the mid-1820s. In so doing it complicates a too easy identification of the relationship between them as simply one of shared utilitarian and party political ideology. It looks beyond public manifestos to consider other sources, such as Anna Birkbeck’s album (begun in 1825), which brings familiar figures into different relation, and introduces new names, such as Mary Shelley, into the interwoven threads that represented radical London at this time. Other stories, like that of the Greek Committee, whose secretary John Bowring, also editor of the Westminster, contributed a poem on George Birkbeck to the album, cut across the histories of the journal Bowring edited and the mechanics’ institution he supported. Other actors, such as Lord Byron, and other forms — poems, cartoons — help us to view these years more fully, and resist the binaried accounts of utilitarianism and Romanticism that run through early commentaries and subsequent scholarship. In fact, things were much less clearly defined. Such an approach reminds us that the imaginative arts were an integral part of the conception and practice of both the Westminster Review and Dr Birkbeck’s London Mechanics’ (later Literary and Scientific) Institution
Unveiling the evolution of enterprise digital innovation strategies: insights from US listed companies' annual reports
This paper introduces a new metric for evaluating digital innovation in enterprise transformation using textual analysis of annual reports from US-listed companies. Through network analysis and topic modeling, we identified 12 topics categorized into three main areas: Digital Technology Innovation, Customer-oriented Digital Strategy, and Digital Transformation in Traditional Business Operations. Our research indicates that digital innovation strategies are critical for maintaining competitiveness and have shifted to a more innovation management-oriented approach. We also found differences in digital innovation strategies between companies and industries. Our study contributes to the theoretical significance of enterprise management and sustainable development
Auditory attention influences trajectories of symbol-speech sound learning in children with and without dyslexia
The acquisition of letter–speech sound correspondences is a fundamental process underlying reading development, one that could be influenced by several linguistic and domain-general cognitive factors. In the current study, we mimicked the first steps of this process by examining behavioral trajectories of audiovisual associative learning in 110 7- to 12-year-old children with and without dyslexia. Children were asked to learn the associations between eight novel symbols and native speech sounds in a brief training and subsequently read words and pseudowords written in the artificial orthography. We then investigated the influence of auditory attention as one of the putative domain-general factors influencing associative learning. To this aim, we assessed children with experimental measures of auditory sustained selective attention and interference control. Our results showed shallower learning trajectories in children with dyslexia, especially during the later phases of the training blocks. Despite this, children with dyslexia performed similarly to typical readers on the post-training reading tests using the artificial orthography. Better auditory sustained selective attention and interference control skills predicted greater response accuracy during training. Sustained selective attention was also associated with the ability to apply these novel correspondences in the reading tests. Although this result has the limitations of a correlational design, it denotes that poor attentional skills may constitute a risk during the early stages of reading acquisition, when children start to learn letter–speech sound associations. Importantly, our findings underscore the importance of examining dynamics of learning in reading acquisition as well as individual differences in more domain-general attentional factors
