Network-based space-time scan statistics for detecting micro-scale hotspots
Events recorded in urban areas are often confined by the micro-scale geography of street networks, yet existing spatial–analytical methods do not usually account for the shortest-path distance of street networks. We propose space–time NetScan, a new spatial–temporal analytical method with improved accuracy for detecting patterns of concentrations across space and time. It extends the notion of a scan-statistic-type search window by measuring space-time patterns along street networks in order to detect micro-scale concentrations of events at the street-address level with high accuracy. Performance tests with synthetic data demonstrate that space-time NetScan outperforms existing methods in detecting the location, shape, size and duration of hotspots. An empirical study with drug-related incidents shows how space-time NetScan can improve our understanding of the micro-scale geography of crime. Aside from some abrupt one-off incidents, many hotspots form recurrent hotbeds, implying that drug-related crimes tend to persist in specific problem places
Experimentation and collecting practice: balancing flexible policies and accountability in developing born-digital museum collections
This article engages with current approaches to collecting borndigital objects in museums of art and design and reflects on the analysis of two case studies concerned with the respective
acquisitions of a virtual reality artwork and a mobile app. The
authors point to their non-standard preservation requirements
and their unconventional objecthood to advocate for the value of
adopting an experimental attitude to collecting. The case studies
invite us to reconsider experimentation within the context of
sensitive dialogic processes with creators and users who are
unfamiliar with the conventions of museum collecting. Hence, the
boundaries of experimentations are developed in relation to
existing policies, organisational structures and practices, and
defined by the stakes of multiple actors. To conclude, the authors
argue that collecting institutions should prioritise building
capacity and understanding needs and requirements for this
emergent type of object, and embrace uncertainty over the
imperative of long-term preservation in its fullest sense
Variación en el tratamiento nominal en español: una comparación de su empleo entre jóvenes ecuatorianas y españolas en Facebook
Desde la perspectiva de la pragmática variacional (Schneider y Barron, 2008), este artículo compara el uso de formas de tratamiento nominal (FTN) en Facebook entre mujeres jóvenes de Quito, Ecuador, y Andalucía, España. Se examinan similitudes y diferencias en las categorías de FTN y mecanismos de modificación que se emplean, los actos de habla en los que ocurren, la posición que ocupan dentro de un enunciado, y las funciones que parecen cumplir en las interacciones digitales examinadas. El estudio se suma al conjunto de trabajos existentes sobre FTN en contextos digitales (Cautín-Epifani y Gladić, 2019) y variación pragmática regional en español (Schneider y Placencia, 2017; Placencia, 2020a). Los resultados muestran tanto usos compartidos como particularidades regionales. Por ejemplo, aunque se emplean las mismas categorías de FTN en los dos corpus examinados, varían su frecuencia de uso y la utilización de recursos de modificación de las distintas formas. Asimismo, se puede observar la influencia del medio digital en los dos grupos a través del empleo de recursos prosódicos tales como alargamientos vocálicos. En cuanto a su función, las FTN parecen utilizarse en general como expresión de afiliación y refuerzo de las relaciones sociales, aunque pueden desempeñar también otras funciones
The increasing frequency of terms denoting political extremism in U.S. and U.K. news media
The term political extremism is commonly used to refer to political attitudes considered to be
outside the ideological mainstream. This study leverages computational content analysis of big data
to longitudinally examine (1970–2019) the prevalence of terms denoting far-right and far-left political
extremism in more than 30 million written news and opinion articles from 54 news media outlets
popular in the United States and the United Kingdom. We find that the usage of terms denoting
right and left political extremism has been increasing across news media outlets in both countries.
This trend is particularly stark for far-right-denoting terms, which have been growing in prevalence
since at least 2008. Most U.S. and U.K. news media outlets tend to use far-right-denoting terms
substantially more often than they use far-left-denoting terms. The rising prevalence in news media
of terms denoting political extremism is strongly correlated with similar growing usage of terms
denoting prejudice and social justice discourse
Government regulation to promote coordinated emission reduction among enterprises in the green supply chain based on evolutionary game analysis
The green supply chain realizes the unification of economic and environmental benefits through green manufacturing, green circulation and reverse logistics, and represents an important way to reduce emissions. The characteristics of the green supply chain network, however, can encourage some companies to exhibit “free- riding” behavior, participating without being willing to reduce emissions directly themselves. This paper applies an evolutionary game model to a two-level green supply chain composed of green suppliers and green manufacturers in order to analyze a variety of internal and external factors that affect the behavior of both parties in the game, and thence numerically simulate the evolution and stability trend of coordinated reductions in emissions. The results identify many cases of system evolution but the only stable evolution strategy is when both (1) the sum of collaborative emission reduction benefits and government subsidies is greater than the sum of collaborative emission reduction input costs and "free rider" benefits, and (2) the increased rate of unilateral emission reduction benefits is greater than the ratio of costs to original benefits. Income arising from collaborative reductions in emissions, enterprise original income, income from unilateral reductions in emissions in- crease ratio, government subsidy coefficient and achievement reward base can directly affect the system evolution path. The larger these value, the greater the probability of green suppliers and green manufacturers choosing collaborative reductions in emissions, and the faster the system convergence speed. Only the imposition of regulatory punishments above the threshold will affect the "free riding" behavior of enterprises and drive the upstream and downstream enterprises of the green supply chain to reduce emissions faster
Do flow, enjoyment and anxiety emerge equally in English foreign language classrooms as in other foreign language classrooms?
The present study focused on differences in intensity of Foreign
Language Enjoyment (FLE), Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA), and proportion of time in a state of flow among 761 English FL learners and 825 FL learners of Languages Other Than English (LOTE). Participants in the LOTE group reported significantly higher levels of FLE and a higher proportion of class time in a state of flow, as well as lower levels of FLCA than the EFL group – although the effect size was very small. This suggests that the global status and prestige of English does not mean that learners around the world enjoy the classes more, spend more time in a state of flow or experience less anxiety. The relationships between FLE, FLCA and proportion of class time in a state of flow were also found to be higher in the LOTE group, suggesting stronger emotional involvement

Rivers and lakes in Western Arabia Terra: the fluvial catchment of the ExoMars 2022 rover landing site
Oxia Planum, the landing site for the ExoMars rover mission, is a shallow basin on the southern margin of Chryse Planitia that hosts remnants of fan-shaped sedimentary deposits associated with the ancient channel system Coogoon Vallis. This indicates runoff from a catchment in Arabia Terra has transported sediment into the landing site. To explore this fluvial system we created a model catchment for Oxia Planum and, using 6 m/pixel ConTeXt camera orbital remote sensing image data, we digitized the fluvial and lacustrine landforms in Western Arabia Terra in and around this catchment. We find: (a) The catchment has a minimum area of ∼2.1 × 105 km2 and has been episodically deformed by tectonic activity; (b) There were at least two phases of fluvial activity. The first created a mature landscape associated with Coogoon Vallis, which may have deposited alluvial or deltaic deposits in the Oxia Basin. After a substantial hiatus, a second phase of activity incised U-section channels into the pre-existing landscape and channel systems; and (c) Evidence for numerous possible paleolake deposits within the catchment. These are not well connected to the fluvial system and were probably sustained by groundwater activity contemporaneous with both phases of fluvial activity. This groundwater might have modified the mineralogy of Oxia Planum. Oxia Planum probably experienced an alluvial or distal deltaic/lacustrine depositional environment during the mid Noachian, which was later overprinted by a younger phase of fluvial activity
