“A Deed of the Darkest Violence”: rape and the emergence of Sadism in Australian Psychiatry, 1920–1950

to reflect on sexual violence and psychiatry in Australia between the 1920s and the 1950s. Everett’s
murder incited debates about Australian masculinity, class, racial degeneration, and sex crimes. It
led to an unprecedented popular interest in the psychiatric diagnosis of “sadism”. Through an
exploration of public discussions around Everett’s murder, as well as similar sadistic murders of
women in New South Wales at the time, I examine the ways Australian newspapers reported on
sadism as a sexual perversion. What do these sadistic rape-murders reveal about everyday
constructions of the sexual sadist in Australia? How did people gain knowledge of perversions?
Did psychiatric classification systems make a difference? Ian Hacking’s concept of “making up”
people is productive for reflecting on the spread of knowledge about psychiatric understandings
of sexual violence

Consumer choices with wealth preferences and separation of consumption and payment
Get PDFThis paper presents a consumer choice model in which both consumption and wealth are valued. The assumption on wealth can help explain observed costly consumer choices such as paying charges for late settlement of bills, and credit card debt costs. The paper addresses one such costly choice puzzle - the credit card debt, or co-holding, puzzle where cash and credit card debt are simultaneously held. An empirical analysis gives a new perspective on the extent of this puzzle and the model shows, theoretically, how including preferences for wealth can help explain the co-holding by individuals with very high levels of liquidity whose behaviour is thus hard to explain with existing theories for co-holding. The model also has implications for optimal demand levels in payment set-ups where payment is delayed, such as such as the rapidly growing Buy Now, Pay Later financing
The interplay between time spent gaming and disordered gaming: a large-scale world-wide study
Get PDFBackground: ‘Gaming Disorder’ (GD) is now an officially recognized mental health disorder according to the World Health Organization (WHO) framework while ‘Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) remains as a tentative disorder as per the American Psychiatric Association (APA) framework. Although both GD and IGD reflect disordered gaming tendencies marked by excessive time spent gaming, little is known about the extent to which too much time spent gaming becomes particularly problematic. Moreover, emerging research has highlighted the need to further explore how both disordered gaming frameworks perform in the assessment and estimation of disordered gaming symptoms and related behaviors.
Methods: The primary aim of the present study was to shed light on the complex relationship between time spent gaming and disordered gaming and to provide prevalence estimates of disordered gaming across the WHO and APA frameworks. This study adopted an online survey methodology and a cross-sectional design in a large sample of 123,262 eligible gamers from 168 countries.
Results: The results obtained indicated that the prevalence rate of disordered gaming among the participants was smaller when assessed with the WHO framework (i.e., 1.96%) in comparison to the APA framework (i.e., 4.97%). Additionally, the relationship between time spent gaming and disordered gaming varied, and disordered gaming was associated on average with 34.53 h of gaming a week within the APA framework (i.e., with at least five criteria endorsed; higher gaming-time-averages for those endorsing more criteria) and an average of 40.13 h a week within the WHO framework (i.e., with all criteria endorsed).
Conclusions: The relationship between weekly time spent gaming and disordered gaming is multifaceted and varies according to the diagnostic framework adopted. The results highlight the need for further refinement at the diagnostic level in regard to disordered gaming

To this end, the article examines punitive state interventions in the ‘neoliberal heartlands’ of the UK and the US, as set against a backdrop of multidimensional crises that have reconfigured political landscapes, the relationship between labour and capital, and the mode and scope of state punishment. Through a focus on the treatment of socio-economically embedded undocumented migrants, the article highlights the increasingly diffuse punitive repercussions stemming from the growing multi-sectoral, corporate-facilitated surveillance of the labour force
