A network analysis of the Internet Disorder Scale–Short Form (IDS9-SF): a large-scale cross-cultural study in Iran, Pakistan, and Bangladesh

    Get PDF
The Internet Disorder Scale–Short Form (IDS9-SF) is a validated instrument assessing internet disorder which modified the internet gaming disorder criteria proposed in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). However, the relationships between the nine items in the IDS9-SF are rarely investigated. The present study used network analysis to investigate the features of the IDS9-SF among three populations in Bangladesh, Iran, and Pakistan. Data were collected (N = 1901; 957 [50.3%] females; 666 [35.0%] Pakistani, 533 [28.1%] Bangladesh, and 702 [36.9%] Iranians) using an online survey platform (e.g., Google Forms). All the participants completed the IDS9-SF. The central-stability-coefficients of the nine IDS9-SF items were 0.71, 0.89, 0.96, 0.98, 0.98, 1.00, 0.67, 0.79, and 0.91, respectively. The node centrality was stable and interpretable in the network. The Network Comparison Test (NCT) showed that the network structure had no significant differences among Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Iranian participants (p-values = 0.172 to 0.371). Researchers may also use the IDS9-SF to estimate underlying internet addiction for their target participants and further explore and investigate the phenomenon related to internet addiction. Raising the pension age

    Get PDF
In 2014 the government legislated for periodic expert reviews of the SPA which would implement the rule that individuals spend on average around one third of their adult lives in receipt of the state pension. Framing the pension age as a technical problem is well understood as a way of trying to remove the policy from political contestation. But it is also a way of defining, or redefining, what the pension is for. The link to life expectancy communicates that state pensions insure against the risk of living a long life and running out of savings (longevity risk). But the old age pension has always had another purpose, which is to insure against the risk of forced retirement. Linking the pension age to life expectancy has the effect of securing insurance against longevity risk while curtailing insurance against forced retirement risk

Humanizing GenAI at work: bridging the gap between technological innovation and employee engagement

    No full text
Purpose– This paper seeks to explore the influence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) on employee performance in the workplace, viewed from a managerial perspective. It concentrates on key elements such as employee engagement, trust in GenAI and attitudes toward its implementation. This exploration is motivated by the ongoing evolution of GenAI, which presents managers with the crucial task of understanding and integrating this technology into their strategic frameworks. Design/methodology/approach– We collected 251 responses from managers and senior managers representing companies that have embracedGenAI inSpain. Ahierarchical regression analysiswas employed to examine the hypotheses. Subsequently, mediating effects and moderated mediation effects were scrutinized using the bias-corrected bootstrapping method. Findings– Thedataanalysis suggests a significant enhancement in employee engagement and performance from a managerial perspective, attributed to improved attitudes and trust toward the adoption of GenAI. This conclusion is drawn from our research conducted with samples collected in Spain. Notably, our findings indicate that while positive attitudes toward GenAI correlate with enhanced engagement and performance, there exists a weakening effect on the significant positive impact of GenAI adoption in the workplace. This suggeststhatGenAIisstillinitsearlystages ofadoptionwithinthesecompanies, necessitatingadditionaltime for managers to develop greater confidence in its efficacy. Originality/value– This study represents one of the pioneering investigations centered on the implementation of GenAI within the workplace context. It contributes significantly to the existing body of literature concerning the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) model in technology innovation adoption within work environments. Studying dystopia helps us think about pressing sociological, environmental, political, and scientific concerns that are part of our every day lives. The genre of dystopia highlights potential ramifications of current and potential developments in our societies and cultures. Moreover, dystopian fiction can reflect on historical events and crises which, fiction reminds us, should never be repeated. In this resource pack you will find excerpts from fiction and key critical sources to help support you as scholars exploring the genre of dystopia

Telomerase RNA gene paralogs in plants - the usual pathway to unusual telomeres

    Get PDF
Telomerase, telomeric DNA and associated proteins together represent a complex, finely tuned and functionally conserved mechanism that ensures genome integrity by protecting and maintaining chromosome ends. Changes in its components can threaten an organism's viability. Nevertheless, molecular innovation in telomere maintenance has occurred multiple times during eukaryote evolution, giving rise to species/taxa with unusual telomeric DNA sequences, telomerase components or telomerase-independent telomere maintenance. The central component of telomere maintenance machinery is telomerase RNA (TR) as it templates telomere DNA synthesis, its mutation can change telomere DNA and disrupt its recognition by telomere proteins, thereby leading to collapse of their end-protective and telomerase recruitment functions.Using a combination of bioinformatic and experimental approaches, we examine a plausible scenario of evolutionary changes in TR underlying telomere transitions. We identified plants harbouring multiple TR paralogs whose template regions could support the synthesis of diverse telomeres. In our hypothesis, formation of unusual telomeres is associated with the occurrence of TR paralogs that can accumulate mutations, and through their functional redundancy, allow for the adaptive evolution of the other telomere components.Experimental analyses of telomeres in the examined plants demonstrate evolutionary telomere transitions corresponding to TR paralogs with diverse template regions

The small GTPase Sar1, control centre of COPII trafficking

    Get PDF
Sar1 is a small GTPase of the ARF family. Upon exchange of GDP for GTP, Sar1 associates with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane and recruits COPII components, orchestrating cargo concentration and membrane deformation. Many aspects of the role of Sar1 and regulation of its GTP cycle remain unclear, especially as complexity increases in higher organisms that secrete a wider range of cargoes. This review focusses on the regulation of GTP hydrolysis and its role in coat assembly, as well as the mechanism of Sar1-induced membrane deformation and scission. Finally, we highlight the additional specialisation in higher eukaryotes and the outstanding questions on how Sar1 functions are orchestrated
