Unconventional Narrative Structure and The Problem of Latency Phase in Peter Pan Novel
PurposeThis research aimed to explain the human’s latency phase through child characters in Peter Pan novel and its relation to the novel unconventional narrative structure. MethodThe research was qualitative using a descriptive case design. The novel’s intrinsic elements were analyzed to see the complexity of this children\u27s literature that led to the analysis of the latency phase of the child characters through the make-believe play. The analysis made uses of Sigmund Freud’s concept of psychosexual personality development. Results/FindingsThis research found that the novel’s complexity came from its unconventional narrative structure such as the layered sub-plots, unique settings, and characters with complex personalities that were uncommon in children’s literature. It then led to the further analysis of the children who were processing their latency phase through their activities. Focusing on Peter as a captain and a father and Wendy as a mother, all the roles manifested their wishes and desires. ConclusionThe research concluded that the unique, inconsistent, and illogical points from the unconventional narrative structure could be explained through the analysis of the story’s issue about the latency phase, which shows complexity found despite its status as children’s literature
Literature, Covid-19 and Human Greed: A Socialist Realism Analysis of Taufiq al-Hakim’s Short Story “Daulah al-‘As}a>fi>r”
The article aimed to discover whether the element of Taufiq al-Hakim\u27s imagination regarding human greed had relevance to the social reality of society, or is it merely an expression of personal imagination that was not related to the social environment of society? To answer this problem, the researcher used the text analysis method with the main corpus of the short story “Daulah al-‘As}a>fi>r.” The theory used in analyzing this text was socialist realism assisted by a literary ecological approach. The analysis showed that Taufiq al-Hakim\u27s imaginative criticism through his sparrow symbol against human greed had a close relevance to the phenomenon of contemporary human life today, like Covid-19 pandemic. Such pandemic was a natural reaction to human greed who had exploited fellow humans and their environment. It was also reinforced by the fact that all big and powerful countries in the world were overwhelmed to overcome Covid-19. This study recommended that humans should not be greedy, so that the balance of nature can be maintained properly

This study concluded that id dominated all the problems experienced by the main character in the novel
The Social Events and the Development of Arabic Language in the Early Period of Islam
This paper discussed the social phenomena that occurred during the birth of Islam and its influence on the revolution process in developing the Arabic language. The study was a qualitative research with a descriptive design relying on documents and literature of al-Mujtama\u27at al-Islamiyah as the primary reference source. This paper showed the social events that accompanied the birth of Islam had an impact and influence on the growth and development of the Arabic language. The social events during the early period of Islam were a great momentum for the revelation of the Qur\u27an, the entry of Islamic teachings into the Arab ignorant society. The establishment of social interaction relations between Arab and Islamic communities became a powerful event in forming the Arabic language. Thus, the early period of the birth of Islam was a time of transformation in standard Arabic. The events and social phenomena that occurred during the early period of Islam also had implications for the growth process of knowledge originating from Islam. The Arab community had made standard Arabic the primary language in delivering Islamic teachings and the development of science. This paper suggested the need for a further study of the development of the Arabic language viewed from the historical aspect
The History of Moslem Intellectuals: A Case Study at UIn Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta
This study aimed to explain that the intellectual community who studied at and was born from the state Institute of Islamic Studies Syarif Hidayatullah (IAIN Jakarta) in the 1970s to 1985 were the second-generation intellectuals who had their own characteristics. As the study was library research, the data collection was done by examining deeply the written documents or literatures that were relevant with the problems being investigated. The obtained data were then qualitatively analyzed by comparing and connecting the existing variables; and inferences were drawn from the findings to get an ideal concept of building a good national and state life based on the Islamic substantial values. The results of the study showed that second generation intellectuals became international intellectuals as Islamic historians in Southeast Asia, theologians, political or socio-economic analysts, and activists of Islamic movements. The study also pointed out that it was not only the first generation that made the second generation successful in their career and studies, but many factors on and off campus contributed significantly, and affect the next generations continuously from time to time. Evidently, in their development, discussion activities of intra-or extra campus organizations, talked not only about Islam but also political issues, such as the old order government policies. The study concluded that the second generation of IAIN Jakarta Intellectual community played many roles in Islamic studies in national and international level. It suggested that studies on the same topis with different points of views are still necessary to conduct
Cultural Transplantation and Legal Paradox: The Case of the Indonesian Judicial Commission Versus the Supreme Court
The purpose of this research was to prove that solving a legal problem needed an interdisciplinary approach, more than merely pure law. It relates to the working culture of law, inter-subjective understanding and reform willingness. The research was done based on descriptive and qualitative method. It included content analyses of the use and misuse concept of regulation, its effect in actual practice and cultural barrier of law enforcement. The finding of this research proved that law enforcement was not like copying a paper. It related closely to the tradition, usage and custom of people. Transforming society only by introducing new regulation and state institution without cultural restoration ended in failure. Thus, the conclusion was the establishment of Judicial Commission in Indonesia, aimed at transforming the Supreme Court, to be more independent, impartial and accountable by supervising the ethical behaviour of the judge. But Judicial Commission is hampered by many difficulties legally and institutionally. Judicial Commission could not work and achieve its goal to bring about Supreme Court more transparent, not only because of legal obstacles but also cultural impunity
Religion, Political Contestation and Democracy: Kiai\u27s Role as Vote Broker in Madurese Local Political Battle
This study aimed to know how the kiai as religious figures who had the highest social status in Pamekasan Regency carried out their work as vote brokers. This study was a qualitative research with a case study method. The research depended on verbal data and information of vote raising done by public figures in a Madurese local election. Intensive interview with some kiai as the key informants was done to get the intended information. They were chosen as primary data sources because they were public religious figures whom the people adhere to. The result showed that kiai with their social capital as vote brokers mobilizing the masses properly attracted political bosses who competed in the local election. Kiai with their religiosity played as an intermediary in delivering material for intended voters. However, it was unethical when the kiai as a religious figure provided material for voters. As a local figure who has a good image in a community, kiai became a major element in the progress of the democratic process. It can be concluded that the kiai as a highly respected religious figure contributed to the democracy to be well organized in the future
Pela Gandong for Social Reconciliation and Peacebuilding in Ambon
This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of Pela Gandong in the process of social reconciliation and peacebuilding in Ambon. Using a sociocultural approach, this qualitative research attempted to examine the theory of social reconciliation in the peace-building process between two conflicting groups. The data that had been collected in the form of interviews, FGDs, and documentation sources related to pela gandong were qualitatively analyzed. The results of the research showed that structural segregation becomes a barrier to the process of social reconciliation because some communities and local elites still maintained inter-group beliefs about the existence of a common enemy due to past conflicts. Pela gandong played a role in strengthening social reconciliation amid actor antagonisms that were difficult to subside, factions among local elites that were still strong, and people who were still trapped in past traumas. Based on the spirit of pela gandong, the government and civil society, including educational institutions in Ambon, presented a peaceful atmosphere with various initiatives, starting from the formation of multi-ethnic villages, providing facilities and infrastructure for harmony, strengthening the curriculum for local wisdom "Pela Gandong" and “Pendidikan Orang Basudara” (POB), to strengthening interfaith mediation institutions in Maluku: Baku Bae, Maluku Interfaith Institution, and Maluku Interfaith Institution for Humanitarian Action. All of them were an effort to create a peaceful Ambon, make Maluku a laboratory for peace, a learning medium for other regions in Indonesia
Equivalence Levels of Literary Corpus Translation Using a Freeware Analysis Toolkit
Machine translation has the potential to make huge contributions to translation industries, but it seems, for now, that machine translation equivalence has led to a crucial point for literary translation by using machine translation because of the problem of the equivalence itself. This paper, therefore, aimed to see the equivalence degree of literary translation resulted by machine translation, i.e., freeware toolkit AntConc 3.5.0 software 2019. The data were collected from English-Indonesian J.K. Rowling\u27s Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix novel by using the software to find the equivalent translation. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively based on the strategy of translation equivalent level proposed by Mona Baker (1992). The analyzed data revealed that the equivalent level of the software mostly occurred in a word level, above word level, and grammatical level. The software was likely difficult to find a textual level and a pragmatic level of translation equivalence because they required a context and still needed human involvement as part of a greater creative project of translation which were not done by the machine translation. After all, Antconc 3.5.0 as Computer Assisted Tool (CAT) brought a huge contribution to translation industry, helped to analyze large corpora particularly to find the degree of translation equivalence in word and above word level
