Glyphosate is an agricultural pesticide of great importance in the world. In this sense, several studies have been developed in order to select adjuvants which elevate the efficacy of the product. Two experiments were performed with the goal to evaluate the efficacy of the glyphosate herbicide when associated to different experimental prototypes of agricultural adjuvants, elaborated from non-purified residue ofbiodiesel production. Gross residue from the biodiesel production was used, as well as its dilution in water, and addition of ammonium sulfate, KOH and/or soybean oil. Control of morning glory (Ipomoea triloba L.) was evaluated in experimental plant nursery, as well as the infestation of weeds in the field condition. In general, the presence of adjuvant prototypes in glyphosate herbicide spray did not result in an increase of the control in any experimental condition, as well as, it did not reduce the efficiency of the product

The introduction of new cultivation technologies for soybean, corn and cotton contributed to a significant increase in the productivity of these crops. A highlight among these technological advances is the resistance of these crops to glyphosate, which initially provided for better weed control, especially in areas with a great diversity of species. Additionally, from a practical point of view it can also be highlighted that the increased time span for weed control, looking at the possibility of applying glyphosate at various growth stages of RR® crops. However, the "convenience" provided by the possibility to apply glyphosate post-emergence for crops such as soybeans, corn and cotton, increased consumption of this molecule, resulting in continuous use by producers. The effect resulting from the use was an increased pressure for selection and consequently for the selection of biotypes resistant to this molecule. In addition to this, the presence of volunteer plants of soybean, corn and cotton resistant to glyphosate has been established in management systems, mainly in the succession of soybean-corn and soybean-cotton. This fact brings high control costs and demanded the use of alternatives for the management of these volunteer plants. In this context, the aim of this work to address and present some management strategies to control voluntary RR® soybean, corn and cotton in cultivation systems in succession of soybean-corn and soy-cotton.

The residual effect of herbicides in the soil on sensitive succeeding crops is known as carryover. Most studies on carryover in vegetable crops have been developed in other countries; however, the problems arising from this phenomenon are also a reality in Brazil. The limited information in the literature, together with the absence of alerts and periods of restriction in the instructions for use of herbicides sold in the country for sensitive vegetables grown in succession contribute to the occurrence of major damage to horticulturists. Herbicides carryover can cause injury, visibly or not, in vegetable crops, it can reduce growth and productivity, as well as compromise the quality of the product and even derail the area for cultivation for years. This review describes the dynamics of herbicides in soil and brings together several works about the residual effect of herbicides in vegetable crops. Further, it discusses the possible ways of monitoring cultivated areas through the analysis in laboratories or bioassays, and strategies to minimize the harmful effects in these cultures, which are highly sensitive. In this context, the integrated weed management is essential to reduce the need for herbicide use and accumulation these on the soil, reducing the risk of carryover, as well as legislative action for the inclusion of restriction periods of sensitive vegetables grown in the instructions for use of herbicides.O efeito residual de herbicidas no solo sobre culturas sucessoras sensíveis é conhecido como carryover.

The association of agricultural chemicals complies with many objectives, such as the simultaneous control of organisms, dosage reduction, increase in the efficacy and prevention of cases of resilience to pesticides. The current paper aims to summarize information on the association of glyphosate with nutrients, herbicides and other pesticides. The association of glyphosate with polyvalent cations (e.g.: Ca and Mn), in general, reduces the efficacy of the herbicide, which can be overcome with the addition of ammonium sulfate to the application spray. The association of glyphosate with other herbicides depends on the used dosages, on the vegetable species, on the evaluation period, on the plant's development stage and on the biochemical compatibility between the action mechanisms of the herbicides. The association of glyphosate with systemic herbicides, in general, presents higher compatibility and benefits in contrast to the mixture with contact herbicides. The association of the glyphosate with auxin mimicking agents, in general, results in a synergetic effect. The mixture of glyphosate with ALS inhibitors may generate synergetic, additive, or antagonistic effects, presenting higher dependence on the doses of glyphosate on the mixture. There are many examples of antagonism among glyphosate and contact herbicides, such as inhibitors of GS, FSII, FSI and PROTOX. There is a lack of publications on glyphosate associated with fungicides or insecticides, and they do not prove synergetic or antagonistic effects of this mixture. However, papers that document the metabolization of glyphosate by plants suggest the need to investigate the impact of insecticides and fungicides in the action of the herbicide.

In herbicides spraying, used as ripeners, should be considered the presence of crops growing in adjacent areas, due to the risk of drift of these products. In this context, assuming the sensitivity of corn to this ripener, the aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of glyphosate sublethal rates in corn when applied to V4 and V8 stages of development. The experiment was conducted in Jataí, GO, consisted of 10 treatments established in randomized blocks design where the treatments were arranged in factorial 2 x 5, with four replications. First factor corresponded to spraying at the V4 and V8 stages of development of the corn and the second factor to sublethal rates (0; 3; 6; 9 and 12% of 216.0 g ha-1 a.e.) of glyphosate. Each plot contained 10 rows of hybrid SYN 7G17 with 9 meters length. Visual phytotoxicity effects on plants were not noticeable in both stages of application at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 42 days after application. Growth and production components were not affected by sublethal rates up to 12% (25.92 g ha-1 a.e.) of glyphosate.

Saflufenacil herbicide can be one more alternative to control aquatic environment weeds, but at the time of or after the application of the herbicide bad weather such as rain, may invalidate the chemical control of problematic species occurring in this environment. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of different rain periods after applying saflufenacil herbicide to control water hyacinth and water lettuce plants. The study was conducted in plastic pots with 2.5 water liter capacity and kept in greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was completely randomized with nine treatments and four replications. Treatments consisted of rainfall simulation performed through a stationary sprayer in periods after the application of the herbicide: 0; 0.25; 0.5; 1; 2; 4; 6; and 12 hours, as well as a period without rain. Saflufenacil was applied at a 33.6 g ha-1 dose and evaluations were performed 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after herbicide application. The occurrence of rain at intervals of more than two hours after the application of saflufenacil did not change the effectiveness on water hyacinth. As for water lettuce plants, there was an effective control with a minimum of four hours for the occurrence of rain after application of the herbicide.

Does pre-emergence herbicides control individual plants and clumps of volunteer corn RR® F2 in soybean?

The grown of RR® soybean preceded by corn RR® increased the occurrence of volunteer corn plants interfering with soybeans. The volunteers originate from the grain lost during harvest corn. Losses occur as individual grains, which give rise to individual plants, and in the form of ear corn or pieces containing various grains, which give rise to the clumps. The volunteer corn if not controlled interfere with soybean and reduces significantly the yield, even in a population less than a plant m-2. Pre-emergency herbicides used for weed control in soybean have control effect on volunteer corn RR® F2, however, few studies have demonstrated its efficiency. The objective was to evaluate the control of clumps and individual plants of volunteer corn RR® F2, provided by spraying herbicides chlorimuron (25 g ha-1), diclosulam (25.2 g ha-1), chlorimuron + sulfometuron (18.7 + 18.7 g ha-1), imazapic + imazapyr (78.7 + 26.2 g ha-1), clomazone (360 g ha-1) and pyroxasulfone (119 g ha-1) applied in soybean pre-emergence. Two experiments were carried on field in the design of a randomized block with four replications. The herbicide imazapic + imazapyr was efficient to control clumps while diclosulam, chlorimuron + sulfometuron and imazapic + imazapyr controlled individual plants showing superior control to 80%. Although the results show control of corn, the yield of soybeans decreased in all treatments when compared to control without corn, suggesting that is necessary additional herbicidal post-emergence applications, especially in high infestation of corn

The cultivation of beets is frequently done in a crop rotation system with cereals such as corn. In this case, herbicides with residual effect applied during corn growth can harm the establishment and growth of beets grown in succession. Therefore, three experiments were carried out in a greenhouse to evaluate the residual effect of atrazine and tembotrione, in isolation or in a mixture, on the initial growth of beets. The treatments consisted of six dosages corresponding to 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% of the recommended dosage. The evaluations were on: plant intoxication, shoot dry matter and SPAD index. Atrazine and tembotrione had a negative effect on the initial growth of beets, presenting reduction in the values of shoot dry matter and SPAD index, as well as increase in the intoxication as the dosage also increased. When the herbicides were applied in a mixture, the effect was enhanced, causing the death of plants in the highest dosages (40 and 50%). Due to these results, the cultivation of beets after the application of atrazine and/or tembotrione in corn crops may become impracticable due to the carryover potential in these situations.O cultivo da beterraba é frequentemente realizado em sistema de rotação de culturas com cereais como o milho.

    Get PDF
The severity of diseases in plants can be affected by practices such as the application of herbicides for the control of weeds. Therefore, we aimed to present and discuss the relationship between the use of herbicides and the severity of diseases of cultivated plants. After contact, the pathogens try to infect and colonize the hosts, which, in turn, use mechanisms to defend themselves from infection. The trichomes, the cuticles and the epicuticular wax are barriers against penetration. Phenolic compounds, enzymes and phytoalexins are substances synthesized by plants and toxic to the pathogens. The herbicide action influences the severity of diseases indirectly on the defense mechanisms of plants or directly when it presents toxic effects to the pathogens. The effect of adjuvants in the commercial formula of herbicides causes degradation of trichomes, epicuticular waxes and cuticles, favoring penetration of pathogens. Harmful effects on the physiology and secondary metabolism of plants, caused by herbicides, affects the synthesis of the above mentioned defense compounds. However, the herbicide molecules may inhibit the germination of spores and the growth of fungal hyphae, which results on the reduction of the infection and colonization. Necrotic points resulting from herbicide action may make plants less prone to the occurrence of rust, mildews and powdery mildews, caused by biotrophic fungi. Herbicides also have secondary effects such as population reduction of alternative host plants and vector insects. The relationship between herbicides and the severity of diseases in crops is an important tool for the phytosanitary management in an integrated way.
