    ANTIDIABETIC ACTIVITY FROM ETHANOL EXTRACT OF KLUWIHS LEAF (Artocarpus camansi)

    Research on antidiabetic activity of ethanol leaf extracts Kluwih (Artocarpus camansi) has been carried out to determine the antidiabetic activity of ethanol extract of leaves kluwih (EELK) of mice using glucose tolerance test. The study began by dividing the mice into 6 groups. Group 1 was given 1% CMC, group 2 to group 4, given EELK 50, 100, 200, 400 mg / kg bw, respectively, and group 6 administered with glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kg bw. Thirty minutes later each group was given glucose 30 mg/kg bw. After 30 min of glucose loading, blood glucose levels of mice were measured, and measured again at minute 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes. The results showed that the glucose tolerance test EELK a significant effect in lowering blood glucose levels compared to controls at 30 and 60 minutes after administration of glucose. At minute 90 to 150, the effect of blood glucose levels EELK restore back to normal. EELK demonstrated ability to reduce blood glucose levels, and EELK doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg bw showed antidiabetic effects better than a dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg bw. Increasing doses showed antagonistic effects: the ability to increase blood glucose levels

    A primate Presbytis thomasi lives in a group with uni-male systems (only one adult make in agroup) at Soraya Research Station. These primates performer their daily activity in one home-range and also protect their home-range with provides a specific vocal (loud-call). There were six groups of Langur with 6-12 individual of each group. The width of home-range shows a variation in each group. The overlapping of home-range ofte causes probles among males and the looser will have to leave as weel as losing all parts of the groups

    IMPACT OF STAND STRUCTURE TO THE DIVERSITY OF TREE SAPLING IN RUBBER AGROFOREST SYSTEM

    The study of stand structure of rubber agroforest system and its effect on tree sapling diversity was carried out in Bungo District, Jambi Province from August 2004 to August 2005. Basal area (BA) and tree density were surveyed using variable-area transect method. Tree sapling species was surveyed using standard plots combined with circular elementary subplots laid along 60 m transect line. The result shown that BA and tree density of rubber agroforest system were lower significantly with forest at the diameter class 30 cm, but at the diameter class 30 cm there were not differ significantly. PCA analysis shown there was a positive correlation between BA non rubber tree with the species diversity and richness indices of tree sapling in rubber agroforest system and there was no correlation between density of non rubber tree and the indices. However, in the forest, BA and tree density were have a negative correlation with the species diversity and richness indices of tree sapling

    GAS CROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF ORGANOPHOSPATE AND PYRETROID COMPOUNDS IN MOSQUITO COILS

    Mosquito coils contain active compounds such as chlorpyriphos, dichlorphos, and d-alletrhrin which may be hazardous to the health. As majority of pesticides are stable heat, they can be changed into stable vapor state by column. a gas chromatographic method of analysis was developed. Gas chromatography for organophosphate compounds, namely chlorpyriphos and dichlorphos, with a OV-17 packed column, and a flame photometry detector equipped by filter for phosphor, which detecs phosphor containing compounds exclusively, avoiding any interference of other non phosphor compounds present in the sample matrix. Gas chromatography for a pyrethoid compound, d-allethrin, utilizes a HP-1 capilarry column with a flame ionization detector, and detect, any ionizable compound. The research was initiated by adjustment of the condition of gas chromatography system to obtain an appropiate separation of compounds a good shape of chromatogram and a tolerable retention time. With a flow rate of nitrogen 55 ml/min, column temperatures of 210oC, a detector and injector temperature of 230oC, the method gave a retention times chlorpyriphos of 6,47 minute and that of dichlorphos of 0,73 minute . The difference in retention time of chlorpyriphos and that of dichlorphos was caused by the difference in molecular weight of both compounds, thin dichlorphos with a smaller molecular weight (220, 98) was eluted faster than chlorpyriphos (350,6). For d-allethrin whit a flow rate of nitrogen gas of 40 ml/min, a column temperature of 180oC, a detector and injector temperature of 210oC, a retention time of d-allethrin of 3,28 minutes was obtained. The mosquito coils tested did not contain any chlorpyriphos nor dichlorphos, and some contained d-allethrin. The d-allethrin content obtained in one of the sample was beyond the tolerated limit

    Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) has been known to cause Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) disease and has been alaso divided into several subtypes (A, B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K) and Circulating Recombinant Form (CRF). Different characteristics of subtype of the virus and its interaction with host can affect the severity of the disease. This study was aimed to analyze HIV-1 genotypes circulating in HIV/AIDS patients from the East Java region descriptively. Information from this research was expected to complement the data of mocular epidemiology of HIV in Indonesia. This study used blood plasma from patients who had been tested to be HIV positive who were seeking treatment or are reffered to the Intermediate Care Unit of Infectious Disease (UPIPI) Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from various area representing the East Java regions. Plasma was separated from blood samples by centrifugation for use in the the molecular biology examination including RNA extraction, nested PCR using specific primer for HIV gp120 env gene region, DNA purifying, DNA sequencing, and homology and phylogenetic analysis. Based on the nucleotide sequence of the HIV gp120 env gene, it was found that the most dominant genotypes in East Java belonged to one group of Circulating Recombinant Form (CRF), namely CRF01_AE and CRF3x_01B, which has been also found in Southeast Asia. In the phylogenetic tree, most of HIV samples (30 samples) were in the same branch with CRF01_AE and CRF3x_01B, except one sample (HIV40) was in the same branch with subtype B

    The study is about a method for enhancing the assessment in e-learning. We study summative assessment that enables teachers or examiners to know if their students have reached an appropriate level of knowledge and formative assessment that enables a student to check how well they are performing in learning. This type of assessment takes the form of a more detailed feedback such as in what aspects a student posses strengths as well as where they have weaknesses. We implement a new approach for enhancing assessment in e-learning by building a system that utilizing a user model to capture users knowledge of a concept and to keep updating it in their user models. We implement the system by using the Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) that were combined with a standard of test called the Question Test of Interoperability (QTI). As the result, more positive and negative feedback can be offered to e-learning users

    BIOLOGY OF PAPAYA MEALY BUG Paracoccus marginatus (HEMIPTERA: PSEUDOCOCCIDAE) IN CASSAVA (Manihot utilissima Pohl)

    The biology of papaya mealy bug (Paracoccus marginatus) in the cassava (Manihot utilissima) had been studied at the Plant Protection Laboratory of the Agriculture Faculty of Syiah Kuala University. The purpose of this study was to investigate the biology of P. marginatus on the cassava leaves. The result showed that the insect development time on cassava leaves were: 8.0 0.79 days for egg stage, 5.3 0.67 days for first instar nymph, 5.5 0.84 days for the second instar of female nymph, 5.3 0.50 days for the second instar of male nymph, 5.4 0.51 days for the third instar of female nymph, and 3.6 0.52 days for the third instar of male nymph (pre pupa), respectively. The development time of IV instar of male nymp (pupa) was 56,6 0,58 days. The development time of the adult stage for female and male progeny were 14 1,24 days and 43,3 0,58 days. The life cycle of female and male were 31,8 3,83 days and 27,8 1,87 days, and the average number of eggs in each ovisac was 413, respectively
