    Spatio Temporal Analysis of Land Use Change for Supporting Landslide Exposure Assessment

    Located in landslide prone areas, Cipanas and Pacet sub-districts are placed in areas where land uses are very dynamic. Land use change analysis is needed in these sub-districts for assessing its pattern and the driving factors that caused the change. Moreover, the results from the analysis can be used as input for land use change modeling to predict land use in the future for supporting landslide exposure assessment. ἀe objective of this research is to assess spatio temporal dynamic of landslide exposure by integrating land use change modeling using CLUE-S and landslide exposure assessment. ἀe obtained Kappa value was classiḀed as high agreement. Future land use prediction was conducted by considering three scenarios, baseline scenario (no restriction), scenario 1 (restriction in conservation area), and scenario 3 (restriction in conservation area and landslide prone area). Result of future land use prediction year 2031 in baseline scenario dominated by settlement and infrastructure expansion and forest conversion into another land use. However, implementation of scenario 1 and 2 in the model, were successfully restricts forest conversion and development of settle-ment and infrastructure in landslide prone area. Landslide exposure assessment was conducted by combining weighted asset map and landslide susceptibility map. ἀere were two type of asset considered in this research, social and physical asset. Population density was applied as a factor for social asset, while land use was applied as a factor for physical asset. Weight of assets and their factors was determined based on experts opinion by using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach. ἀe result landslide exposure assessment shows that high and medium landslide exposure area follow pat-tern of settlement and infrastructure land use. Future landslide exposure assessment by considering baseline scenario resulted in the increasing of high landslide exposure area in year 2031. On the other hand, by applying restriction in scenario 1 and 2, high landslide exposure can be reduced

    An Examination of the Determinants of The Mode of Transport to Primary Health Facilities in A Developing Region

    Access to primary health facilities is a key determinant of the overall well being of the population in an area.   In rural regions were distances to public facilities are usually longer compared to urban areas, it is not clear if people are still willing to walk to use these facilities. It is pertinent therefore to clarify such uncertainty since walking distance is a standard measure used to plan such public facilities particularly in rural regions. The objective  of this study therefore is to provide a framework to determine the factors that will influence a health care service seeker in a developing region to walk or use other means of transport to a primary health facility.  The case study for this research is Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun state made up of eleven urban and rural wards. One hundred and fifty households were selected at random for interview. Logit regression was used to describe how some predictor variables were used to explain the likelihood of a particular household walking to a primary health facility. The predicting model  in this study was able to classify 80.0% of the cases correctly.   This simply shows that the predictors (independent variables) contribute to the predicting power of the logistic regression model.   The  pseudo R-squares of Cox and Snell’s R-square and Nagelkerke’s R also show that our logistic model is relevant to predicting whether a household will walk or use a vehicle while attending a health facility.   In our study, we noted that settlement status (p=0.00)  and transport cost to health facility (p=0.00) contributed significantly to the prediction.  This study also reveals that the odds for household members in an urban area to walk to the health facility often used  is 88.1%  lower than the odds for a household in a rural area.   It was revealed that households that are poor are 49% times more likely to walk to the health facility they frequently used. The knowledge of the factors that will determine whether health care service seekers in a developing region will want to walk or not will assist government in the planning and provision of health facilities

    Suburban becomes footing for the population who migrate from rural to urban areas, especially from livingand housing. Similarly, when the population in urban areas assume that the city is no longer comfortable to their live,so the only possible choice for them is moving to suburb. The subsequent impact of the phenomenon is tremendousconstruction of residential areas as a result of the high demand for housing. The problem then is the construction ofresidential areas often neglect the interests of the local neighborhood. Thus, the residential area becomes a kind of modernresidential area in a local neighborhood. Then it widen its impacts of inequality between communities in residentialarea with communities in local neighborhood. This paper presents the finding that contributor of income inequality insuburbs areas in Indonesia comes from a modern residential area. The evidence for the argument is the result of TheilEntropy Index calculation on modern residential area is higher than the traditional residential area, which is respectively0.34 and 0.15

    Estimation of Carbon Stock Changes in Above Ground Woody Biomass due to Volcano Pyroclastic Flow and Pyroclastic Surge

    Merapi Volcano National Park (MVNP) is susceptible to volcanic hazard since it is located around Merapivolcano, especially pyroclastic flow. Carbon sequestration in the national park is becoming a priority of forest developmentas stipulated in Government Regulation Number 28 Year 2011 and Number 49 Year 2011. This study aims to knowthe effect of pyroclastic event to carbon stock in MVNP. In this study the natural carbon rate recovery in MVNP wasestimated to determine the growth rate of natural carbon recovery in MVNP. To estimate carbon stock change in MVNP,2006 QuickBird and 2011 GeoEye satellite imageries were used. Object based image segmentation of high resolutionsatellites imagery could recognize physical dimensions of individual trees such as crown projection area (CPA). In thisstudy, carbon stock was derived using allometric equation based on measured diameter at breast height (DBH) in thefield. A model was developed to estimate carbon stock based on DBH estimation in the field and segmented CPA fromthe image. Based on the segmentation process, the model of CPA and Carbon in MVNP was developed. The F scorewhich indicate the accuracy of segmentation of needle leaf and broadleaved of 2011 GeoEye were 0.68 and 0.54 respectively.Logarithmic model which has 6.37 % error was used to estimate broadleaved carbon stock while quadratic modelwhich has 10.31 % error was used to estimate Pine tree carbon stock in MVNP

    The Livelihood Analysis in Merapi Prone Area After 2010 Eruption

    As stated in Regent Regulation No. 20 Year 2011 about Merapi Volcano Disaster-Prone Area, Merapi eruption in 2010 affected larger area than before included Kalitengah Lor, Kalitengah Kidul and Srunen hamlet which was now categorized as prone area zone III or the most dangerous area related to Merapi volcano hazard and was forbidden to live at. But its local people agreed to oppose the regulation and this area had been 100% reoccupied. This research examined about the existing livelihood condition in Kalitengah Lor, Kalitengah Kidul and Srunen that had been changed and degraded after 2010 great eruption. The grounded based information found that 80% of households sample were at the middle level of welfare status, meanwhile the high and low were at 13% and 7% respectively. Each status represented different livelihood strategy in facing the life in prone area with no one considered the Merapi hazard, but more economic motivation and assets preservation. The diversity in strategy was found in diversification of livelihood resources which were dominated by sand mining, farming and dairy farming

    ETHNIC CONCENTRATION AREAS IN NEIGHBOURHOOD PERSPECTIVE IN ENSCHEDE, THE NETHERLANDS

    Previous studies suggest that measuring ethnic segregation at a disaggregated level allows capturing variabilityof ethnic concentration areas within a city. However, many ignore the relative locations of each neighbourhoodto identify ethnic concentration areas. It causes misidentification of ethnic concentration areas. Using the 2009population data of Enschede, this study investigated the concentration areas at postcode level. The “scale of theneighbourhood” represents the extent of concentration influenced by population in neighbouring postcodes.Using composite population at different scales of neighbourhood, it was revealed that concentration areas atsub-city level are characterized by isolation and clustering dimensions. Few postcodes are Turkish or Moroccanconcentration areas which are located outside the city center. Small number of cluster and isolated areaindicates that the ethnic concentration in Enschede is relatively low. The study has advanced the hypothesisabout segregation measurement, that spatial proximity to neighbouring areas has a large impact on variabilityof ethnic segregation

    Constraints to Urban Planning and Management of Secondary Towns in Uganda

    Many towns in Uganda are growing at an unprecedented rate. By 2030 more than 50% of Ugandans will beliving in urban centres. This rapid growth of urban centres in Uganda provides for economic opportunities for manyurban residents. It also poses various challenges such as urban sprawl, emergence of informal settlements as well asurban poverty. Over 60% of the urban residents in Uganda live in the informal settlements with no basic services andinfrastructure such as piped water, decent housing, good roads, sewerage systems as well as schools and health centres.This paper aims to examine and understand the constraints to urban planning and management of secondary towns inUganda. Using an eclectic mix of research methods such as face to face interviews targeting key informants, a questionnairesurvey as well as observation, the study found that the current modernist planning approach has not achieved itsintended goal of promoting orderly urban development and improve service delivery in the secondary towns. The studyalso revealed that the urban residents are rarely involved in planning. Besides, there is an apparent mismatch betweenwhat is taught at the local planning schools and what is required in terms of planning in the secondary towns. To addressthese intractable urban challenges, it is critical that the current planning education and curriculum are reviewed to producecreative and imaginative planners that can respond more effectively to the community problems, adopt a strategyto promote strategic spatial planning that is more participatory, carry out public awareness campaigns about the need forproper planning of towns and adopt a strategy for promoting innovative funding programmes such as municipal bonds,use of the stock exchange to mobilise the required investable funds, allow the private sector to access institutional fundssuch as the employee provident fund and promote public-private partnerships

    For a long time, cities have been regarded as the main source of economic growth and development. However, increased size and density of cities have generated high land costs, rent and transport cost, congestion and pollution, and increased social disorganization. The condition is even worse in developing countries – urban migration, over-utilization of housing and infrastructure, persistent slums, and squatter settlements. This books represents a comparative study between the USA and Nigeria related to characteristics of the cities in both countries. This book tries to address the question “How has the United States of America and Nigeria have been able to address the problems of ‘swollen’ cities and metropolitan growth?”. Outcome of several planned new communities and cities in both countries is of paramount importance to the contribution of knowledge on physical planning approaches globally.     Determination of Coastal Belt in the Disaster Prone Area: A case study in the Coastal area of Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

    Mitigation strategy development is needed for protecting coastal communities and preserving coastal resourc-es from the impact of coastal hazards. It is believed that coastal land use planning can be proposed to reduce impact of coastal hazards. ἀe coastal belt boundary development is one of the mitigation approach which is common use in many countries as an inexpensive solution compared to hard structure development. Our study was located in the coastal area of Bantul regency, a low lying coastal area and densely populated region, where some clustered people lives proximity to the sea. In this study, a new method for determining coastal belt boundary was developed in the study area. ἀe Spatial Multi Criteria Evaluation (SMCE) tool of Ilwis plays as powerful tool for assessing coastal vulnerability in term of multi-hazard events. To calculate the width of the coastal belt boundary, the Ilwis-SMCE outcomes were employed. By apply-ing this method, there were three scenarios of the setbacks wide for both direct and pairwise method to be proposed. In general, the coastal area of Bantul Regency is dominated by high vulnerable area respectively impacted by multi-hazard events (tsunami, high wave and erosion-accretion), by incorporating some coastal features, such as topography, bio-physics, economic, and social-culture. ἀe results of the analysis are consistent with what was observed in the actual areas. Taken into account for hazard and vulnerability indices, the coastal belt boundary established in this area should wider than those already determined by existing regulations

    The spatial effect of fiscal decentralisation on regional disparities: the case from Indonesia

    This study investigates the effect of decentralization on regional economic convergence between 1994 and 2004. Using spatial analysis, this research explains the presence of spatial dependence, which it is misleading to ignore it on the common linear regression. The paper argues that there is a strong evidence of spatial autocorrelation among.Indonesia districts and regional convergence rate is higher in the decentralization period. Furthermore, the spatial error model suggested that, despite Jakarta’s major economic and political role, a random shock is insignificant if it introduced to the capital city
