    Identification of Upwelling Area of the Western Territorial Waters of Indonesia From 2000 To 2017

    The Western Waters of Indonesian (WWI) present a diverse interaction of ocean-atmosphere dynamics. One of them represents the event of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and upwelling. The objective of this study is to determine the dynamics of chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl–a), especially during IOD and ENSO. Also, this study is aimed to examine the temporal and spatial distribution of the upwelling area from 2000 to 2017. The data utilized consisted of Chl–a, wind stress, Sea Level Anomaly (SLA), and Sea Surface Temperature (SST). The technique used to determine the upwelling area was by examining the maximum conditions of Chl–a, the low temperature of SST, and SLA. The results showed the sea surface temperature had a relationship with the concentration of Chl–a. It was obtained if the Directional Movement Index (DMI) and N3.4 (Niño 3.4 Index) moved stably (not too fluctuation) resulting in high concentrations of Chl–a. High standard deviations of SST are recognized around the Sunda Strait (June – October). When the standard deviation of SST is high, there is also a tendency for high Chl–a concentrations, while the results of empirical calculations show that large areas of upwelling occurred in January and September respectively at 12,447.72 km2 and 8,146.20 km2. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that the upwelling does not only occur at the coastal area of Western Sumatra (coastal upwelling), but it also occurs in the eastern territorial waters of the Indian Ocean. In addition, the upwelling area has the same pattern as the Chl–a concentration in January - October.

    Assessment of Road Rehabilitation in Ibadan, Nigeria

    The study examined road rehabilitation in Ibadan North East Local Government of Oyo State, Nigeria. The data used in this study was obtained from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data was obtained through a reconnaissance survey and administration of the questionnaire. The reconnaissance survey is appropriate to establish the nature of an environment, event or situation before making decisions. The population for this study consists of all the residents available in Ibadan north local government. Both descriptive and thematic content analysis was employed in the analysis. Findings showed that rehabilitation (3.33) is the most desirable facility in the study area. Construction, maintenance, traffic management capacity building and street naming followed with 3.01, 2.56, 2.42, 2.28 and 2.12, respectively. The study concluded that compensation is an important factor that can enhance sustainable urban renewal programme, and therefore resident whose building was affected are to be compensated so that they could secure a better place for living or for their transaction.

    Model of Agents-Based Branchless Banking Services Development in Urban and Rural Area

    The banking sector has experienced a far leap related to Information Communication and Technology (ICT)-based services. Among them is e-banking that has been used by the community, especially in urban areas. Likewise, the use of ATMs can be used to provide banking services to the wider community, so that it can replace most of the functions of services in banks. However, in communities outside of urban areas such as rural communities there are still limitations in accessing e-banking and ATM services. Limited use of e-banking because this service must use internet media or smart phones to access. Meanwhile, the limited use of ATMs due to the availability of ATMs in rural areas is not as much as in urban areas, considering that rural areas are areas with low settlement densities. Today, banks in Indonesia have provided branchless banking by enabling agents. Branchless banking is found in urban, suburban and rural areas. In previous research, the existence of branchless banking in the form of agents and their utilization by customers has been identified. From previous studies, maps of agent and customer density and analysis related to the condition of regional accessibility have been produced. This research is a further study focusing on sub districts area with high agent density in both rural, suburban and urban areas. The purpose of this research is to analyze the development model of agent-based branchless banking services. Data was collected through primary data through observation, structured interviews and measurement of coordinates of the location of agents and banking services in the form of ATMs and Banks. The final result is expected to be used as a model for the development of branchless banking services in Indonesia.

    Assessment of the Current Pollution Status of Jabi Lake in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria

    This paper was aimed at providing the pollution status of Jabi Lake, FCT Abuja. 13 parameters were tested from raw water collected four sampling points. The physicochemical parameters were measured using Hanna multiparametric meter, while transparency was measured using Secchi disc. Dissolved oxygen, Biological and Chemical oxygen demand were measured titrimetrically using standard method. The concentrations of the metals were determined in triplicates. Flame atomic absorption spectrometer was used in the analysis as well as descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and standard error. The Nigerian Industrial Standard and WHO guidelines for domestic water were used to compare the results of the water from the lake. The study reveals that the mean turbidity ranged between 21.6 – 24.2cm and is above the recommended limits of both WHO and NIS. The range of pH was between 6.3 and 8.8. pH is within a neutral range. The study reveals that the mean value of TDS and electrical conductivity is below the recommended limit of both WHO and NIS guidelines. The study shows that there is high concentration of some heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Mn, Zn, and Fe) in Jabi Lake. Cd, Zn, Fe and Ni are above the permissible limits of the NIS and WHO guidelines, which is an indication of pollution. The study, therefore, recommends that proactive measures be taken on environmental laws in FCT and that environmental/health worker and non-governmental bodies be active in enlightenment campaigns that will alert members of the public to the harm being caused to this important ecosystem

    Groundwater resources mapping for small island using Geoelectrical Technique the case study of Ternate Island

    The measurement of 2D geo-electrical using Wenner Alpha configuration was conducted in the shore line of northern part of Ternate island, in order to know the depth of interface and to analyze the aquifers in conjunction with estimation of ground water potential. Water quality analysis is also conducted in some dug wells, such as in situ water temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and salinity.Due to laboratory analysis, the values of measured parameters of water quality from some dug wells meets to the standards referred, especially for drinking water. The result of interpretation from geo-electrical data showed the depth of interface less than 10m.  From a drilled well data near shore line, indicate about 5m deep of interface. Base on geo-electrical survey, water quality analysis and field observation can be concluded that Ternate Island has limited potential of ground water, especially related to amount of fresh ground water. Which is now days, no alternative source yet of clean water for domestic use.

    Specifications of Cartographic Symbols for Indonesian Tactile Map

    Visual impairment people require a means of information transfer which different from normal people, it needs to be touched or amplified by audio, including maps that apprise them of the objects and events occurring on Earth. Cartographic Sciences have developed  tactile maps that offers touchable symbols for supporting blind and partially sighted people in recognizing the spatial distribution of geographical phenomena and their intercorrelation. Creating an informative tactile maps need a specific design of symbol, ancillary information, and map reproduction that meets the need and the capacity of its users. Unfortunately, there has been no international standardization for these map features that could be used as a foundation to build a standardization for our national tactile map. Therefore, this research adopted and modified the designs of tactile symbols published by the National Mapping Council of Australia, the Guidelines for Design of Tactile Graphics by American Printing House, the use of tactile variables by Vasconcellos, the Specifications of Topographic Elements Mapping by Bakosurtanal, and the application of visual variables of Bertin for cartographic mapping. The resultant symbol designs from the modification were applied to develop the tactile maps of Yogyakarta City on swell paper. Then, through interviews with map users (visually impaired people in the city), we evaluated these symbols from two aspects, comprehension of tactile variables and the types of the tactile maps required

    The Spreading of Vernacular Architecture at the Riverways of South Sumatra, Indonesia

    The development of past settlements was supported by riverways connecting many regions with ethnic diversities. Inter-ethnic dissemination and contact created new cultural combinations. In the southern part of Sumatra, there are two types of stilt houses: highland architecture and lowland architecture. Both architectures are developed by different ethnic groups spread along different riverways. This study focuses on identifying and analyzing the influence of the riverway in the typology of the vernacular stilt house. The architectural typology data was confirmed by field observations and interviews. The analysis was carried out through the Geographic Information System to correlate the influence of the riverway and the ethnic culture on the distribution of the architecture and its transformations. The results show that the river as a transportation route takes up a more dominant role in the spread of architecture than the boundary of the ethnic culture. The cultural significance shows that the highland architecture in the upstream area has a more original and simpler character than the lowland architecture in the downstream area. The riverway exposes diverse cultures to blend into more complex architecture

    Predictive numerical modeling of groundwater drawdown impacts in Jakarta

    An excessive groundwater usage is happening in Jakarta, Indonesia, due to the population growth and industrial development so that it experiences a significant groundwater drawdown which could enhance the risk of seawater intrusion and land subsidence. Existing conditions in 2018 show that seawater intrusion occurred at the Western and Central coastal area and land subsidence happen in the Northern and Central part. This research, a numerical simulation, is conducted by modeling such causality during the critical period, the next 20 years. The result shows that for every groundwater drawdown of 10 m/year, it will cause intrusion 0.7 km/year in the Western and Central and 1.1 km/year in the Eastern area after 2028. The 10 m/year groundwater drawdown also results in land subsidence of 5.7 cm/year in the Northern and 2.5 cm/year in Central Jakarta. This result is useful as an input for groundwater management policies and to prevent the environmental impacts occurred at other large coastal cities.
