This Master Thesis is to analyze the Greek Tragedy of Antigone (441 BC), taking into account the processes of interrelationship, transposition, and film representation in contemporary cinema to understand, as the main object of reflection, the process of rewriting the film Antigone (Sophie Deraspe, 2019), by Canadian filmmaker Sophie Deraspe. The study has a qualitative approach, characterized as analytical-descriptive. There were used Bibliographic and film analyses as research methods. The research used the decomposition and clipping of scenes, dialogues, and excerpts from the film Antigone. Discussions revolve around young Algerian refugee Antigone Hipponome as an immigrant in Montreal, Canada, with her family. The notes allow us to deepen fundamental questions about the interdiscursive, comparative, intermedial, and transpositive characteristics between Sophoclean tragic narrative and cinema, whose analytical focus also draws attention to the political and social debates that permeate the film in the 21st century. By visualizing the processes of cultural and intertextual dialogue, some of the precepts about comparison, intercultural adaptation, and intermediality between dramaturgy and cinema were understood. Therefore, from the discussions undertaken, it was possible to perceive that the tragic work of Antigone and its cinematographic rewriting, proposed by Sophie Deraspe, imply a dynamism in which the literary myth takes effect in contexts of appropriation, production, and circulation in contemporary times

The influence of cartographic representation on landslide susceptibility models : empirical evidence from a Brazilian UNESCO world heritage site.

The influence of cartographic representation of landslides on susceptibility models is well-known but often neglected by academic studies, which rarely explore its practical implications. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by evaluating the impact of different landslide sampling strategies on statistical models of landslide susceptibility in Ouro Preto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in South-eastern Brazil. The study’s main objective was to assess how different landslide sampling strategies affected statistical susceptibility models. It adopted an innovative methodological approach that categorized dependent variables between training and test subgroups, adopting both balanced and unbalanced divisions of dependent variables, and focusing on shallow and deep landslides. In addition, the study introduced a systematic and critical approach to cartographic representation, providing valuable insights for future research and practice on landslide susceptibility mapping. Eighteen models were produced using an inventory with 57 historical landslides mapped with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. The area and volume of these landslides were determined. Three divisions of dependent variables were adopted between training and test subgroups: one balanced division, with large and deep landslides in both subgroups, and two unbalanced divisions, with a predominance of large and deep landslides in the training subgroup or test subgroup. The construction of landslide susceptibility models employed the information value method, validated through success and prediction curves. The results show the significant influence of cartographic representation (point or polygon) on the quality of statistical models and the spatial distribution of susceptibility classes. The polygonal cartographic representation and balanced partition of dependent variables produced the best results. However, it is emphasized that this cartographic representation is not universally optimal in other contexts. The worst result was obtained using a point and random cartographic representation. Overall, findings indicate the need for more accurate landslide inventories and databases, possibly through standards and regulations

Reading is one of the fundamental cognitive processes for student's development. To this end, various skills are activated when reading, including inferential skills, which are essential and support the study of other areas of knowledge. Therefore, reading cannot be understood solely as decoding linguistic signs. Based on this principle, the aim of this paper is to discuss the inferential skill of reading and how it is dealt with in the reading activities of advertisements in elementary school textbooks (LD). The aim is to contribute to reflections in the light of the theoretical framework that has approached reading not just as a decoding skill, but one that is committed to the formation of a critical reader. To this end, inferential skills are considered to be an integral part that should not be neglected in this process of reader education. The choice of the object of study is justified by the fact that it is a theme present in the work of teachers with reading, as well as highlighting the importance of inferential ability in the process of teaching and learning reading skills, understanding that teaching reading for the exercise of citizenship legitimizes the participation of the individual in their social environment in which inferential ability will be necessary for understanding various types of texts. In this sense, the research is characterized by the analysis of activities that make up the textbooks of the 6th to 9th grades of elementary school, with regard to the work of the reading strategy: inference. The results to be discovered could contribute to the pedagogical practice of Portuguese language teachers in relation to the place that teaching reading skills should occupy in the student's educational process

Assessing and managing safety risks to downstream communities (in hindsight) : what went wrong in the licensing and impact assessment procedures of Brazil’s deadliest dam breaks?

    No full text
Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is a policy tool used all around the world to predict, mitigate, and manage the impacts and risks of development proposals. This tool, if well implemented and articulated with licensing procedures, can result in improvements of project design and in the prevention and mitigation of environmental and social harms. But sometimes EIA can fail, as illustrated the collapse of the Brazilian tailings dams Fundão and B1, in 2015 and 2019 respectively. Despite having gone through licensing and EIA procedures, the two dams collapsed, killing almost 300 people. This study set out to understand how the vulnerability of downstream communities to dam breaks were predicted and managed in the dams’ EIA processes. This study also tried to understand whether the EIA process of a newly approved tailings dam in Brazil (Maravilhas Dam III) improved the prediction of safety risks to downstream communities. The study was based on literature reviews and a content analysis of eighty-four (84) key documents related to the dams’ licensing and EIA procedures. The study found that the risk-related studies of the dams were based on a variety of methods (e.g., Preliminary Hazard Analysis, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Dam Break simulations, Contingency Plans) that were implemented in different phases of the licensing procedures. It was possible to identify several flaws and limitations in these methods, such as vagueness, late implementation, fragmented reviews of interdependent risks, and low influence on decision-making. Both the Fundão and B1 dams were approved despite the lack of in-depth and up-to-date risk assessments. Public consultations were generally weak and plagued by tokenism. Post-approval procedures, while informed by monitoring, audits and inspections that confirmed problems in the dams, were unable to educate developers and State authorities about the likelihood of failures and the safety risks to communities. Overall, the Fundão and B1 cases show the importance of not only predicting but also managing risks in a timely, transparent and articulated manner. The Maravilhas III Dam, compared to Fundão and B1, was found to have sounder evaluations of safety risks and stronger public participation. The regulatory and voluntary frameworks concerning tailings dams have improved in recent years. The projects of Fundão and B1 could not receive an environmental license had they been subject to the current Brazilian legislation, because they proposed a now-banned technology (upstream dams) and had vulnerable communities located in self-rescue zones, which is now legally unacceptable. Despite these regulatory changes, there is still room to improve regulations, guidelines and Terms of References for risk analysis and its articulation with impact assessment and public participation. The article discusses the academic implications of the cases to international audiences and put forward several practical recommendations

    No full text
Large volumes of waste are generated from the manufacture of slabs, roofing, and tiles using slate stone. The use of waste in the construction industry is prevalent due to the environmental advantages associated with the implementation of circular economy standards. This paper examines the production of Portland cement CEM II using heat-treated slate waste. The fineness index results were 10.95 % for the 75 μm sieve and 23.53 % for the 45 μm sieve. Assessment of reactivity using mechanical methods showed that mortars produced with 20 % slate waste (SW) achieved a strength of 42.35 MPa and a mechanical index of 84.93 %. Direct measurement (FTIR), along with chemical methods (Frattini Test and Saturated lime test), confirm the pozzolanic activity of the slate waste. The environmental impact assessment demonstrated a reduction in the carbon dioxide emission rate by 21.49 % (6.54E+02 kgCO 2-eq/t) with the use of Portland cement CEM II/CSW. The valorization of slate waste can contribute to the availability of an alternative source of raw material and the reduction of natural resource consumption. However, further studies on mechanical performance and durability are necessary for this waste to be applied in structural cementitious matrices

This Master's Completion Work is the result of the Postgraduate Program strico sensu Professional Master's Degree in Family Health (PROFSAÚDE), inserted in the line of research ―Health care, access and quality in basic health care‖, in the study of Care Home Care (HC) in Primary Health Care (PHC). The study was divided into two axes, descriptive and exploratory. Axis 1 aimed to describe the experiences of doctors from the Family Health Teams of Ouro Preto/MG, in the scope of the actions performed and the skills of such professionals; the Competency-Based Curriculum of the Brazilian Society of Family and Community Medicine was used to evaluate attributes related to AD, highlighting the average presence of actions, knowledge, skills and attitudes of each group of competences highlighted by such curriculum. The result showed that doctors practice and feel competent in the ―prerequisite‖, ―essential‖ and ―desirable‖ attributes, but have little practice and confidence in the ―advanced‖ ones. Axis 2 carried out with 30 Brazilian doctors, to select eligibility criteria for AD1, at the end of two rounds of questionnaires using the modified Delphi technique, obtained a strong consensus (>75%) for: bedridden, dependence on AVDB, palliative care , mobility changes, advanced underlying disease, untrained caregiver; and weak consensus (50% to 75%) for: use of osteomias/oxygen, dependence for AVDI, post-hospitalization, physical disability and changes in cognitive function or communication. Conclusion: the actions and competencies of doctors from the eSF in Ouro Preto/MG describe that they perform and feel competent with the attributes specific to AD1, but not those that are specific to the scope of AD2/AD3, showing the importance of articulation of PHC and SAD in the RAS to offer comprehensive care within the scope of AD. The delphi study for eligibility criteria for AD1 showed that the focus on diseases with functional loss, which makes it impossible to travel to health units, as well as the absence of a trained caregiver who would help overcome the difficulty in carrying out daily activities or even locomotion, predict insertion in AD1; These criteria open space for research that will add evidence to the results raised by this work

Thermal insulating coating mortars with mining and steel residues and the proposition of a “thermal insulating admixture”.

    No full text
The present work developed a thermal insulating coating/plastering mortar from the complete replacement of the natural aggregate by friable quartzite (QTZ), with the addition of steelmaking slag powder (SSP). Despite having promising characteristics, no studies so far have taken advantage of the thermal insulating properties of the SSP. Initially, the QTZ and PEA were characterized according to physical, chemical, mineralogical, and morphological analyses. The mortars were prepared with Portland cement, hydrated lime, air-entraining admixtures (AEA), fine aggregates, and SSP. Four mixes were produced: (1) reference (REF) (with natural sand); (2) QTZ + AEA (NO SSP); (3) QTZ + AEA + 5%SSP, and (4) QTZ + AEA + 10%SSP. The following tests were carried out: flow, water retention, specific gravity (density), water absorption by immersion and by capillarity, flexural strength, compressive strength, adhesive strength, UPV, morphology, shrinkage, thermal conductivity, specific heat, and potential of environmental contamination. As result, the QTZ presented physical characteristics similar to those of the natural aggregate, except for the high content of powdery material. The mortar with 5% SSP had the lowest thermal conductivity (56% lower than REF) and the highest specific heat (37% higher than REF). The SSP’s mineralogical composition and resulting pore system were the most influential factors for these properties. Therefore, the SSP can be considered a “thermal insulating admixture” and the use of these residues is technically feasible to improve the thermal performance of buildings

Identification, characterization and quantification of xanthones from Fridericia formosa leaves extract with antiviral activity.

    No full text
Fridericia formosa (Bureau) L.G. Lohmann (Bignonaceae) is a neotropical liana species found in the Cerrado biome in Brazil. It has been of great interest to the scientific community due to its potential as a source of new antivirals, including xanthones derived from mangiferin. In this context, the present study aimed to characterize and quantify the xanthones present in the ethanol extract of this species using high performance liquid chromatography. Additionally, the antiviral activity against Chikungunya, Zika, and Mayaro viruses was evaluated. The chromatographic analyses partially identified twenty-six xanthones, among which only fourteen had already been described in the literature. The xanthones mangiferin, 2′-O-trans-caffeoylmangiferin, and 2′-O-transcoumaroylmangiferin, are present in higher quantities in the extract, at concentrations of 9.65%, 10.68%, and 3.41% w/w, respectively. In antiviral assays, the extract inhibited the multiplication cycle only for the Mayaro virus with a CE50 of 36.1 μg/mL. Among the isolated xanthones, 2′-O-transcoumaroylmangiferin and 2′-O-trans-cinnamoylmangiferin inhibited the viral cytopathic effect with CE50 values of 180.6 and 149.4 μg/mL, respectively. Therefore, the extract from F. formosa leaves, which has a high content of xanthones, has antiviral potential and can be a source of new mangiferin derivatives

The processing of materials used in civil construction contributes to high rates of global CO2 emissions. This sector needs adaptations in its material manufacturing processes to make them more sustainable. The compressed earth block (BTC) appears as an alternative capable of replacing the traditional ceramic brick, as it generates lower CO2 emissions, energy savings and the possibility of incorporating waste that could be discarded in the environment. In view of this, this work aims to evaluate the mechanical properties, durability and mineralogical of BTC produced with iron ore waste from Gesteira (RMFG) and stabilized with Portland cement and eucalyptus biomass ash (CBE). For this, the materials were characterized regarding their physical, chemical, mineralogical, thermal and microstructural properties. Subsequently, BTC prototypes were molded and, after curing times of 7 and 28 days, they were tested to assess quality. The results of the compressive strength test indicated that the inclusion of Portland cement at levels of 10 - 7.5% in the mixtures provided resistance greater than the recommended 1.6 MPa. On the other hand, the inclusion of CBE in the mixture reduced the resistance as the substitution content increased. The prototypes proved to be efficient in terms of water absorption (<20%). An ideal content of 7.5% Portland cement and 2.5% CBE proved to be viable for manufacturing BTC, meeting the resistance and durability parameters
