Exploring cultural dynamism of ethnomodelling as a pedagogical action for students from minority cultural groups.

    No full text
Mathematics education is inherent to the discourse of globalization, which often states that mathematical knowledge is universal. Certain global mathematical techniques and procedures found in many mathematics curricula around the world often discourage students to engage in creating their own mathematical knowledge. This suggests that dominant cultural values are defined as universal or at the very least labeled as normative, while peripheral mathematical knowledge is tagged as merely simplistic, primitivistic, folkloristic, and/or as forms of obsolete systems. Our main purpose here is to discuss how ethnomodelling promotes a holistic understanding of local and global approaches in mathematics education, which contributes to the development of a glocal comprehension of mathematical practices developed by members of distinct cultures, which means placing them at the center of the educational process. Through the development of ethnomodelling, this pedagogical action promotes connections between day-to-day knowledge and systematized school curricula. Thus, this theoretical article demonstrates how we might consider situating local mathematical practices (margins) at the center (glocal) of the mathematics education process by decentering globalized mathematical knowledge in the search for peace and social justice

The present study aims to analyze the Interactional Didactic Adequacy Criterion revealed by two future Mathe- matics teachers in the process of elaborating a lesson plan involving the perspective of Gamification. From three training meetings carried out through the Google Meet platform, the lesson plan carried out by the participants in the gamified perspective was qualitatively analyzed, based on components and indicators of Interactional Adequacy proposed by the Ontosemiotic Approach. Thus, the recordings of the meetings as well as the ma- terials produced by the participants were considered as data corpus. From the analysis, the data showed that the use of the Gamification Methodology made the Interactional Adequacy criterion more evident, since this methodology is based on the interaction and inclusion of students

Based on a bibliographical review and re-readings of different authors, we aim to bring visibility to the discussion regarding intermodal bilingualism and, consequently, to present a reflection on the acquisition of the first and second languages (L1 and L2) by deaf children. We aim to highlight the importance of the first language, in this case, sign language, as a means for developing competence in the second language, the oral language, in its written modality. We divided the article into an explanation of the contact of deaf children with sign language (SL) as their first language. It discusses the development of oral language (OL) as the second language: first addressing writing and then moving on to issues related to reading. Finally, it reflects on using visual resources and how these visual modes can enhance the second language teaching and learning process for deaf children.

Individuals with severe depressive symptoms present diminished facial expressions compared to healthy individuals. This reduced facial expression, which occurs in most depressive patients could impair social relationships. The current study sought to investigate whether pictures with social interaction cues could elicit diferent modulations of facial expressions and mood states in individuals with depressive symptoms compared to healthy individuals. A total of 85 individuals were divided into depressive and non-depressive groups based on their beck depression inventory scores. Participants viewed pictures containing neutral (objects), afliative (people interacting socially), and control (people not interacting) scenes. Electromyographic signals were collected during the entire period of visualization of the blocks, and emotional questionnaires were evaluated after each block to assess sociability and altruism (prosocial states). In non-depressed individuals, afliative pictures increased the activity of the zygomatic muscle compared to both neutral and control pictures and reduced fear of rejection compared to neutral pictures. During the visualization of the afliative block, zygomatic major muscle activation was higher and fear of rejection was lower in the non-depressive individuals than in the depressive. These efects refected the low expressions of smiling and sociability to afliative pictures in depressive individuals. These fndings highlight the importance of smiling and prosocial states in social interactions, especially in these individuals

Introduction: Although some studies have reported the association between uric acid (UA) and hypertension, evidence on prehypertension is still lacking. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the levels of UA and other cardiovascular markers among prehypertensive and hypertensive patients and assess their risk for developing arterial hypertension. Methods: 157 individuals were recruited: 67 normotensive, 23 pre-hypertensive and 67 hypertensive. Blood samples were collected to measure biochemical parameters and anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were evaluated. We calculated the product of lipid accumulation and the visceral adiposity index to assess cardiovascular risk. Results: Our data showed an increase in UA levels in normotensives (4.9 ± 1.3 mg/dL), prehypertensives (5.2 ± 1.3 mg/dL) and hypertensives (5.9 ± 1.6 mg/dL) (p = 0.004). We found a higher frequency of hyperuricemia in the hypertensive group (34.3%) than in the normotensive group (13.4%, p < 0.05). Hypertensive volunteers had lower levels of HDL-C (p = 0.004 and p = 0.003) and higher body mass indexes (p < 0.001 and p = 0.007), glucose (p < 0.001 and p = 0.033), triglycerides (p = 0.001 and p = 0.005), visceral adiposity index (p < 0.001 and p = 0.002) and lipid accumulation product (p < 0.001 and p = 0.007) than normotensive and prehypertensive participants. We also observed that individuals with UA ≥ 6.2 mg/dL had an increased risk of hypertension of 4.77 (p = 0.003) compared to individuals with levels ≤ 4.3 mg/dL

This study investigated future changes in land use and their impacts on water resources in the Carmo river basin, Minas Gerais, using a coupled model approach: Dinamica-EGO and SWAT. Dinamica-EGO modeling was carried out using transition matrices, weights of evidence and cellular automata methodologies. The simulation was validated using the exponential decay function and multiple windows, adapted from the traditional Fuzzy methodology, obtaining minimum similarity values of 0.58 for a spatial resolution of 285m. Three future land use scenarios were simulated: Business as Usual (BAU), Optimistic (OTM) and Pessimistic (PES), considering the IPCC's RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 climate pathways. The hydrological modeling was calibrated using RSWAT, through the calibration methodology that uses the Sequential Uncertainty Fitting (SUFI-2) algorithm, obtaining values of KGE 0.66 and R2 0.58. The BAU scenario projects a continuation of historical trends, with a modest increase in forest cover and shifts between agriculture and pastures. The OTM scenario indicates significant growth in forest areas due to proactive environmental policies, while the PES simulates a decline in forest, agricultural and forestry areas, driven by the expansion of pastures and urban areas. The hydrological simulation with SWAT revealed significant reductions in maximum and average flows, reaching 70% and 24%, respectively; and increase of minimum flows (8% to 16%) varying between the scenarios and simulated climate trajectories, when compared to the simulated current values. The optimistic scenario stands out, which emphasizes sustainable management practices, and shows significant potential for vegetation regeneration, expansion of forestry, and resilience in the face of water scarcity. The limitations and difficulties encountered include data harmonization and the adequacy of model calibration parameters, highlighting the importance of high- quality data and robust methodologies. These results highlight the importance of integrated management policies for the sustainability of water resources and land use and occupation. Considering the impact of the Fundão dam-break in 2015, which released millions of cubic meters of mining waste into the environment, the findings of this study are essential to guide environmental recovery strategies and strengthen the resilience of river basins affected by disasters. The coupled model approach used in this study offers a comprehensive view of possible future changes, enriching discussions about territorial and water resources management and the effectiveness of environmental policies

“Welcome to Montero” : as performances de masculinidade negra nos videoclipes de Lil NasX.

    No full text
Lil Nas X is a black, homosexual American rapper. His first studio album, titled "Montero," is a reference to his real name. As a more intimate album, the artist overtly expresses the intersecting aspects of his identity that traverse his body. In light of this, three music videos (INDUSTRY BABY, MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name), and THAT'S WHAT I WANT) are analyzed, presenting a unique visual and musical narrative that connects with the artist's performative identity and political stance. Taking an intersectional perspective (CARRERA, 2021; HOOKS, 2019; ANZALDÚA, 2005; CRENSHAW, 2002), i.e., considering the intersections of identity, it is possible to identify in Lil Nas X's performance (TAYLOR, 2013; SOARES, 2014; AMARAL, SOARES, and POLIVANOV, 2018; GUTMANN and FILHO, 2019; GUTMANN and MOTA JUNIOR, 2020) the negotiation of multiple ways of conceptualizing black masculinities in popular culture (HALL, 1992; FAUSTINO, 2014; CONRADO and RIBEIRO, 2017; HAWKINS, 2017; HOOKS, 2019; RIBEIRO, 2020; PORFÍRIO, 2021; COSTA, 2023). In more practical terms, this research seeks to recognize traces of intersectionality or the construction of the subject in Lil Nas X's music video performance (GUTMANN and MOTA JUNIOR, 2020; SOARES, 2014). In this regard, the Intersectional Roulette (CARRERA, 2021) is employed as an analytical tool to identify traces of deviations and repetitions of intersections mobilized by the researched subject. Considering these issues, a table is constructed, divided into four main axes (DISCIPLINARY INSTITUTION, CONTEXT, TRANSGRESSION, and CONDEMNATION), which helps to understand the narrative construction of the music videos and, consequently, the discourses, symbols, and metaphors mobilized. Thus, through the table, it becomes possible to recognize, analyze, and name the themes materialized by the artist that revolve around the idea of KNOWLEDGE-PLEASURE, HOMOEROTICISM, and BLACK AFFECTION. Through these thematic axes analyzed, a multifaceted performance is perceptible that tensions and destabilizes the normative brands of black masculinity

    Death feigning in ants.

    No full text
In many animals, feigning death is a last resort to avoid being killed by a predator or competitor. While the neurological and physiological correlates of death feigning (DF) as well as its adaptive significance have intensively been studied in numerous arthropods, detailed studies on this phenomenon in ants are rare. Here, we describe DF in ants in detail and show that in many species it can be provoked by experimental manipulation or staged encounters with aggressive competitors in the laboratory. Much less is known about the context and consequence of death feigning in nature and whether it successfully protects ants from ant-eating predators or territorial intruders. We suggest additional research on this often neglected, but easily studied phenomenon, which will help to increase our understanding of its importance and underlying causes

This research is affiliated with the branch of history theory that investigates the relationship between literature and history and their mutual contributions. By analysing historiographical metafictions published by English-language authors between 1969 and 1975, it also hopes to contribute to research on postmodernity and its poetics. The works studied constitute a well- defined group, within the very different universe of historiographical metafictions published in the second half of the 20th century and present a similar relationship with referentiality. We investigated the hypothesis that they are capable of bringing their readers closer to issues important to the writing of history and that, in addition, they contain indications of the historicity of their own time. Our research shows that even authors with a Marxist orientation dedicated themselves to issues linked to the linguistic turn and, through works with formats with a wide audience reach, they brought to readers reflections on the construction of the discourse of the past, its locality and the existence of pasts silenced by such construction. Published in a period marked by the great diffusion of the ideas of the linguistic turn, the works address the narrative dimension of the past, both in its form of access and in its representation. Furthermore, the historiographical metafictions analysed proved to be a document of their own time, reflecting their themes, their approaches and allowing considerations about their historicity
