Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Materiais. Departamento de Engenharia Metalúrgica, Escola de Minas, Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto. This thesis addresses an integrated simulation and optimization tool for forecasting the execution of annual mining planning. For this purpose, we developed a discrete event simulation (DES) model integrated with mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to incorporate the main equipment cycle and downtime. The MILP model creates work-shift plans for the DES model. It considers ten objectives and solves them hierarchically based on the mining status at each simulation instant. Three case studies involving an iron ore mine with two processing plants are analyzed to test this tool. In the first case, we analyze the impact of the number of loading machines and the tolerance to the iron grade target on the particle size and stripping ratio targets for a work shift. In the second study, four scenarios of an annual mining plan are simulated. Feeding the biggest processing plant is prioritized in case of a shortage of released ore in the mine. Moreover, the prioritization of the grade target and the particle size target are alternate, and the iron grade target varies. Finally, the third study focuses on understanding the impact of the size of the homogenized pile on the feed rate in the processing plants and on the variability of ore grades between these piles. The results of the first study showed that when the appropriate number of loading machines is chosen for a work shift, there is a reduction in the deviation from the targets for grade, particle size, and stripping ratio. On the other hand, the second study showed a greater gain in ore mass for the biggest plant when it is prioritized and when the particle size target is optimized hierarchically before the grade target. Finally, the third case study showed a gain in the mass fed to the processing plant when considering a smaller pile size scenario.

Technological advancements in engineering, computing, and materials science have enabled the design of more slender structures without compromising their strength and safety, allowing for more efficient use of materials. However, these structures can be more sensitive to vibrations caused by external forces, such as wind and earthquakes, making it essential to understand and control these effects to ensure their integrity. One way to mitigate the effects of unwanted vibrations is through the use of tuned mass dampers (TMDs), which are passive control mechanisms consisting of a mass-spring system connected to the structure. This study investigated the application of multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMDs) for vibration control in a structure modeled as a 20-story shear building reduced to a single degree of freedom. Initially, a numerical routine was developed to analyze the behavior of the system formed by the structure and the MTMDs in both the time and frequency domains. Subsequently, the behavior of the system was evaluated using 1 TMD and 3 TMDs, arranged in both interconnected and non-interconnected configurations. The characteristic parameters of the TMDs (mass ratio, frequency, and damping ratio) were optimized using the JAYA algorithm, with the objective of minimizing the maximum amplitude of the frequency response function (FRF). Finally, the uncertainties in the AMS parameters were taken into account using the Monte Carlo simulation sampling method, incorporated into the JAYA optimization algorithm, with the aim of achieving greater effectiveness in the responses. The Monte Carlo Simulation was also employed to compare the response distributions obtained from the optimization processes. Overall, the results were satisfactory, indicating that the inclusion of uncertainties in the optimization process contributed to the development of more effective parameters, better adapted to variations under real operating conditions

Baccharis dracunculifolia (commonly known as Alecrim-do-Campo) is a plant with ethnopharmacological significance due to its use by populations across various regions of Brazil. It is a native Brazilian plant, rich in flavonoids, that absorbs UV radiation, suggesting the potential for its use in natural sunscreen filters. This study aims to evaluate the sunscreen potential of Alecrim-do-Campo. Three extracts were obtained using different solvents. The dichloromethane and ethanolic extracts demonstrated the highest activity, as indicated by their higher Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values. The extracts underwent phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity testing, and quantification of total phenolic and flavonoid content, as well as GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) analysis. By correlating the antioxidant capacity with phenolic compound levels, it was found that the ethanolic extract of Alecrim-do-Campo contains the highest concentrations of phenolic compounds and exhibits strong antioxidant activity. A nanoemulsion containing the ethanolic extract was developed using the phase inversion method, showing promising stability results. GC-MS analysis revealed that the most abundant compound in the extracts is benzenepropanoic acid. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoids and phenolic compounds in both the dichloromethane and ethanolic extracts. The results suggest that Baccharis dracunculifolia is a promising candidate in the search for natural sunscreen filters

Biodegradation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in secondary effluent by microalgae-bacteria consortium.

Trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) are bacteriostatic agents, which are co-administered to pa- tients during infection treatment due to their synergetic effects. Once consumed, TMP and SMX end up in wastewater and are directed to municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) which fail to remove these contaminants from municipal wastewater. The discharge of WWTP effluents containing antibiotics in the envi- ronment is a major concern for public health as it contributes to the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Improving treatment applied in WWTPs is one of the measures to tackle this issue. In this study, a natural microalgae- bacteria consortium cultivated under low intensity LED irradiation was used as a quaternary treatment to assess the removal of TMP alone (50 μg L− 1 ) and also mixed with SMX (TMP/SMX; 50 μg L− 1 of each) from real WWTP secondary effluents from anaerobic treatment systems. The removal of the sulfonamide resistance gene, sul1, was also evaluated. This is the first study assessed the removal of TMP alone and TMP associated with SMX in real effluent using microalgae-bacteria consortium without nutrient enrichment. Biodegradation experiments were conducted for 7 days, residual amount of antibiotics were assessed by low-temperature partitioning extraction (LTPE) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) and sul1 was analyzed by quantitative Polymerase Chain Reac- tion (qPCR). Results showed that SMX removal (48.34%) was higher than TMP (24.58%) in the mixture. The presence of both antibiotics at 50 μg L− 1 did not inhibit microalgae-bacteria consortium growth. After 7 days, there was a slight increase in the absolute abundance of sul1 and 16S rRNA. The main removal mechanism for both antibiotics might be attributed to symbiotic biodegradation as bioadsorption, bioaccumulation and abiotic factors were very low or insignificant. While the application of a microalgae-bacteria consortium as a quaternary treatment seems to be a promising alternative, further research to improve degradation rate aiming at a global removal >80% as required in the Swiss and European directives is encouraged

Seamless steel pipes classified as API 5CT are widely used in oil and gas exploration wells, with K55-grade steel commonly subjected to quenching and tempering (Q&T) to meet mechanical requirements. This study investigates an alternative heat treatment strategy based on austempering post-intercritical austenitizing to develop ferrite–bainite biphasic microstructures aiming to reach this grade. Experimental procedures include computational simulations, dila- tometric analysis, scanning electron microscopy/optical microscopy micro- structural characterization, Vickers microhardness testing, and tensile tests. The combination of intercritical austenitizing at 750 °C and austempering at 400 °C results in a well-balanced microstructure, achieving a yield strength of 532 MPa, tensile strength of 779 MPa, total elongation of 16%, and a hardness of 270 HV, meeting the API 5CT K55-grade requirements. Compared to Q&T conventional treatments, this route improves ductility while maintaining strength and eliminating the need for a tempering stage. These results demonstrate the potential of austempering after intercritical austenitizing as a viable alter- native for manufacturing K55-grade pipes, enabling better mechanical performance

This study evaluated the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance agents (ARAs) — including antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) — in sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and Valladolid, Spain. It also investigated the dynamics of these ARAs under different treatment processes, such as open-air drying, chemical alkalinization, and hydrothermal processes (steam explosion and autohydrolysis), including combined schemes with anaerobic digestion. The results are presented in five chapters (6 to 10) of this thesis. Chapter 6 discusses the dynamics of ARAs during sludge treatment in WWTPs. Chapter 7 examines the evolution of these agents during open-air sludge drying. Chapter 8 focuses on the removal of ARAs and pathogens in secondary and digested sludge subjected to chemical alkalinization. Chapter 9 explores hydrothermal treatments by steam explosion (SE) and autohydrolysis as alternatives for the suppression of pathogens and resistance agents in activated sludge from Brazil and Spain. Finally, Chapter 10 evaluates the influence of steam explosion and autohydrolysis on methane production, as well as their effects on the removal of ARAs before and after anaerobic digestion. In Chapter 6, ARAs were quantified in all sludge samples analyzed, and none of the investigated resistance elements were completely removed by biological treatment. Furthermore, positive correlations between these elements, physicochemical parameters, and microbial profiles suggest co-selection processes. The results of Chapter 7 showed that open-air drying alone is insufficient to suppress ARAs, especially in digested sludges, which raises concern regarding the agricultural land application of this biosolid. In Chapter 8, the effectiveness of alkaline treatment in suppressing ARAs was strongly influenced by sludge type, exposure time, and lime dosage, with better performance in digested sludge, although still insufficient to fully eliminate resistance elements. In Chapter 9, both hydrothermal processes evaluated promoted significant reductions in ARB and ARGs. However, the results also revealed increases in the apparent concentration of certain antimicrobials, relative enrichment of ARB and ARGs, selective pressure, and persistence of spore-forming and biofilm-forming microbial groups. In addition, differences between sludge treated in Brazil and Spain suggest that treatment efficacy depends on the intrinsic characteristics of the matrix. The results of Chapter 10 indicate that post-treatment by steam explosion of digested sludge was more effective in suppressing ARAs, while pre-treatment by steam explosion favored energy recovery, with greater increases in methane production. Overall, although the treatments evaluated promoted significant reductions in ARAs, none were able to fully eliminate them. The persistence and even enrichment of these elements, together with their positive correlations with physicochemical parameters and microbial communities, reinforce the role of sludge as reservoirs and potential disseminators of antimicrobial resistance. These findings underscore the need for integrated treatment and management strategies, as well as continuous monitoring of ARAs, particularly in the context of agricultural sludge use

This study addresses the development and evaluation of sustainable adsorbent materials aimed at mitigating emerging contaminants in polluted waters, with a particular focus on organically modified layered double hydroxides (LDHs). The literature review highlighted the potential of organo-LDHs for water decontamination, emphasizing their high surface area, ion-exchange capacity, and chemical tunability, as well as the need for further research on their application in real wastewater systems and life cycle assessment. In the experimental phase, hybrid composites composed of organo-LDHs intercalated with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS-LDH) and tangerine peel-derived biochar (SDS- LDH/BC) were synthesized. These materials achieved diclofenac removal efficiencies of up to 90% and 81%, respectively, exhibiting high stability and promising reusability. Finally, a multicriteria metric – ADSUS (Adsorbent Sustainability Index) – was proposed for the integrated assessment of adsorbent sustainability, considering technical, environmental, and economic aspects. The results demonstrate the potential of organo- LDHs and the ADSUS metric as complementary tools for the development of more efficient and environmentally responsible adsorption technologies

Background Self-medication is defined as the use of medicines without a prescription and supervision by a qualified professional. This practice can cause a lot of damage to an individual’s health, such as allergic reactions, dependence, drug resistance, among others. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of self-medication and its association with covid-19 infection among university students at Federal Higher Education Institutions (IFES) in Minas Gerais, during remote teaching due to the covid-19 pandemic. Methods This was a cross-sectional and multicenter study, with undergraduate students from eight Brazilian IFES. Data collection took place between October 2021 and February 2022. The students responded to a self-administered questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle habits and health conditions, available on an online platform. The medicines mentioned by the students were separated by classes, according to the ATC (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical) and cases of self-medication were subsequently identified. Descriptive (frequency) and bivariate (Pearson's chi-square test) analyzes were carried out. A multivariate analysis (logistic regression) was carried out between self-reported infection by the covid-19 virus and the practice of self-medication. Results 8650 students participated in the study, with 26.57% (95%CI: 25.32–27.86) reporting self-medication. Analgesics, antidepressants and anti-inflammatories were the most cited classes. Students suspected of being infected with the covid-19 virus used self-medication more often compared to non-infected students [OR: 1.63 (95% CI: 1.34–1.99)]. Conclusion Self-medication was associated with suspected infection with the covid-19 virus. It is necessary to create actions that make students aware of the problems that this practice can cause
