Three-dimensional single-shell dielectric lens design using complex coordinates and local axis-displaced confocal quadrics.
This study proposes an analytical formulation in complex coordinates to synthesise three-dimensional single-shell dielectric lens surfaces. An exact formulation based on geometrical optics is developed, and the synthesis problem is modelled as a non-linear second-order partial differential equation of the Monge–Ampère (MA) type. An alternative numerical scheme based on axis-displaced confocal quadrics is used to locally represent the surface of dielectric lens. The advantage of this approach is to analytically obtain the partial derivatives present in the MA equation. To validate the proposed methodology, numerical results are obtained by an iterative algorithm that allows the simultaneous control of the transmitted beam width and the power density amplitude in the far-field region. To illustrate the synthesis effectiveness, two examples of lens antennas are simulated and analysed
Managing inpatient bed setup : an action-research approach using lean technical practices and lean social practices.
Purpose – This article aims to introduce a guide to improving hospital bed setup by combining lean technical
practices (LTPs), such as kaizen and value stream mapping (VSM) and lean social practices (LSPs), such as
employee empowerment.
Design/methodology/approach – Action research approach was employed to analyze the process of
reconfiguration of bed setup management in a Brazilian public hospital.
Findings – The study introduces three contributions: (1) presents the use of VSM focused specifically on bed
setup, while the current literature presents studies mainly focused on patient flow management, (2) combines
the use of LSPs and LTPs in the context of bed management, expanding current studies that are focused either
on mathematical models or on social and human aspects of work, (3) introduces a practical guide based on six
steps that combine LSPs and LSPs to improve bed setup management.
Research limitations/implications – The research focused on the analysis of patient beds. Surgical beds,
delivery, emergency care and intensive care unit (ICU) were not considered in this study. In addition, the
process indicators analyzed after the implementation of the improvements did not contemplate the moment of
the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, this research focused on the implementation of the improvement in the
context of only one Brazilian public hospital.
Practical implications – The combined use of LSPs and LTPs can generate considerable gains in bed setup
efficiency and consequently increase the capacity of a hospital to admit new patients, without the ampliation of
the physical space and workforce.
Social implications – The improvement of bed setup has an important social character, whereas it can
generate important social benefits such as the improvement of the admission service to patients, reducing the
waiting time, reducing hospitalization costs and improving the hospital capacity without additional physical
resources. All these results are crucial for populations, their countries and regions.
Originality/value – While the current literature on bed management is more focused on formal models or
pure human and social perspectives, this article brings these two perspectives together in a single, holistic
framework. As a result, this article points out that the complex bed management problem can be efficiently
solved by combining LSPs and LTPs to present theoretical and practical contributions to the important social
problem of hospital bed management
Dissolution profile of calcium supplements in Brazil : a critical analysis and formulation proposal.
Low calcium intake is common worldwide and may lead to osteoporosis. Therefore, calcium supplementation is a vital resource to prevent fractures in patients with osteoporosis. The present study aims to assess whether the dissolution
profiles of calcium tablets available in the Brazilian pharmaceutical market are equivalent and interchangeable. Seven commercial samples from the local pharmaceutical market and an experimental formulation containing calcium
carbonate from seaweed Lithothamnium calcareum were evaluated. In addition to the dissolution test, the tablets were characterized according to average weight, hardness, disintegration time, and calcium content. Moreover, we
determined the polymorphic forms of calcium present in the tablets by employing x-ray diffraction. We related the data of these quality attributes by applying principal component analysis (PCA). The results revealed that the formulation
containing calcium carbonate from the seaweed L. calcareum outperformed the other products from the market, with a complete dissolution within 10 min. Statistically significant differences in dissolution efficiency were noted. The
disintegration times for all samples varied greatly from 12 s to 14 min. Polymorphic forms were identified in two samples, and the calcium content of the commercial samples was out of pharmacopeial specification. Thus, the products cannot be considered equivalent. It is recommended to evaluate the manufacturing processes for these supplements

Economic evidence of cartel in the resale of liquefied petroleum gas (lgp) - in Campina Grande-PB.
Fixed-length interval estimation of population sizes : sequential adaptive Monte Carlo mark–recapture–mark sampling.
Mark–recapture sampling schemes are conventional approaches for population size (N)
estimation. In this paper, we mainly focus on providing fixed-length confidence interval
estimation methodologies for N under a mark–recapture–mark sampling scheme, where,
during the resampling phase, non-marked items are marked before they are released back
in the population. Using a Monte Carlo method, the interval estimates for N are obtained
through a purely sequential procedure with an adaptive stopping rule. Such an adaptive deci-
sion criterion enables the user to “learn” with the subsequent marked and newly tagged items.
The method is then compared with a recently developed accelerated sequential procedure in
terms of coverage probability and expected number of captured items during the resampling
stage. To illustrate, we explain how the proposed procedure could be applied to estimate
the number of infected COVID-19 individuals in a near-closed population. In addition, we
present a numeric application inspired on the problem of estimating the population size of
endangered monkeys of the Atlantic forest in Brazil
Multi-method characterization of rare blue quartz-bearing metavolcanic rocks of the Rio dos Remédios Group, Paramirim Aulacogen, NE Brazil.
The Rio dos Remédios Group comprises a supracrustal sequence that occupies the base of the Espinhaço Supergroup, São Francisco Craton, Brazil. Its basal formation, Novo Horizonte, crops out in the Paramirim region mainly as metavolcanic rocks that represent one of the fewer occurrences of blue quartz phenocrysts in South America. Their mineralogy consists of quartz and K-feldspar phenocrysts, whereas biotite, muscovite, fluorite, allanite, chlorite, sericite, zircon, and opaque phases occur immersed in a quartz-feldspar-rich groundmass. Such hetero-geneous composition is also supported by x-ray diffraction and chemical data. Electron probe microanalysis in some samples revealed the presence of two distinct groups of biotite (magmatic and neoformed), in addition to the presence of iron-rich white mica and almost pure orthoclase feldspar. Our data suggest that the studied metavolcanic rocks have maintained their magmatic characteristics, which were progressively overprinted by hydrothermal fluids and ductile-to-brittle deformation. The magmatic mineralogy is akin to strongly peraluminous and alkaline magmas, common in anorogenic settings – a fertile site for the origin of blue quartz-bearing rocks worldwide
Long‐and short‐term vegetation change and inferred climate dynamics and anthropogenic activity in the central Cerrado during the Holocene.
A paleoecologic analysis of pollen, macrocharcoal and trace elements from a lacustrine sediment core located at Lake Feia, central Cerrado (Goiás State, Brazil), was used to evaluate the relationship between vegetation, fire and climate during the Holocene. The development of cerrado vegetation appears to have begun 6000 years ago, initially with the establishment of an open cerrado, followed from 4800 cal a BP by a change to a woody cerrado driven by an increase in summer insolation. The increases in precipitation levels in the central Cerrado during the last 5000 years are related to the increased influence of the Amazon in central Brazil, which has facilitated biomass burning and anthropogenic activities in the region of Lake Feia. Multi‐centennial‐scale changes in water level‐related and gallery forest pollen assemblages indicate three main dry episodes, at 3440–2760, 2700–1690 and 1330–1150 cal a BP, linked to regional shifts between northern and southern South American summer monsoon boundaries. The presence of low continuous fire activity does not appear to have affected vegetation recovery, whereas two intervals with increased fire activity, at ~3300 and ~1300 cal a BP, indicated a slower recovery
The extremal problem for Sobolev inequalities with upper order remainder terms.
Given a smooth compact Riemannian n-manifold (M, g), we prove existence and compactness results of extremal functions for sharp Sobolev inequalities which are closely related to the embed ding of H1,q(M) into L qn/(n−q) (M) where the L
q remainder term is replaced by upper order terms.
