Paper batteries are self-pumping emerging tools for powering portable analytical systems. These disposable energy converters must be low-cost and must achieve enough energy to power electronic devices. The challenge is reaching high energy while keeping the low cost. Here, for the first time, we report a paper-based microfluidic fuel cell (PμFC) equipped with Pt/C on a carbon paper (CP) anode and a metal-free CP cathode fed by biomass-derived fuels to deliver high power. The cells were engineered in a mixed-media configuration, where methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, or glycerol is electro-oxidized in an alkaline medium, while Na2S2O8 is reduced in an acidic medium. This strategy allows for optimizing each half-cell reaction independently. The colaminar channel of the cellulose paper was chemically investigated by mapping the composition, which reveals a majority of elements from the catholyte and anolyte on each respective side and a mixture of both at the interface, assuring the existing colaminar system. Moreover, the colaminar flow was studied by investigating the flow rate by considering recorded videos for the first time. All PμFCs show 150−200 s to build a stable colaminar flow, which matches the time to reach a stable open circuit voltage. The flow rate is similar for different concentrations of methanol and ethanol, but it decreases with the increase in ethylene glycol and glycerol concentrations, suggesting a longer residence time for the reactants. The cells perform differently for the different concentrations, and their limiting power densities are composed of a balance among anode poisoning, residence time, and viscosity of the liquids. The sustainable PμFCs can be interchangeably fed by the four biomass-derived fuels to deliver ∼2.2−3.9 mW cm−2 . This allows choosing the proper fuel due to their availability. The unprecedented PμFC fed by ethylene glycol delivered 6.76 mW cm−2 , which is the benchmark output power for a paper battery fed by alcohol

    No full text
Aim: To assess the association of food consumption according to degree of processing with changes in systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure in adult participants of a Brazilian cohort. Methods: Longitudinal study with 2496 adult participants of the Cohort of Universities of Minas Gerais (CUME Project). Food consumption was categorized by food groups according to degree of processing following the NOVA grading system: unprocessed/minimally processed foods/culinary ingredients (U/MPF&CI), processed foods (PFs) and ultra-processed foods (UPFs). unprocessed/ minimally processed foods/culinary ingredients (U/MPF&CI), processed foods (PFs) and ultra-processed foods (UPFs). Changes in SBP and DBP were categorized (decreased, maintained, increased). Independent associations between exposure and outcomes were verified using multiple generalized ordered logistic models adjusted for potential confounders. Results: After a two-year follow-up, the consumption of U/MPF&CI (% daily caloric intake) reduced the chance of increasing DBP (P for trend ¼ 0.014), with a more evident effect among participants within the 5th quintile of this food group (odds ratio (OR) ¼ 0.55; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.34–0.97]. On the other hand, the consumption of UPFs (% daily caloric intake) raised the chance of increasing DBP (P for trend ¼ 0.005) and was more evident among participants within the quintiles of higher consumption (4th quintile – OR ¼ 1.97; 95% CI: 1.25–3.10; 5th quintile – OR ¼ 1.79; 95% CI ¼ 1.12– 2.86). No associations were found between food consumption according to degree of processing and changes in SBP. Conclusion: Higher consumption of U/MPF&CI and UPFs were independently associated to lower and greater chances of increased DBP in adult participants from CUME Project

    Generalized torsion elements in groups.

    No full text
A group element is called a generalized torsion element if a finite product of its conjugates is equal to the identity. We prove that in a nilpotent or FC-group, the generalized torsion elements are all torsion elements. Moreover, we compute the generalized order of an element in a finite group G using its character table

Exploring DNA-interaction and molecular structure of ruthenium/1,2-bis-(diphenylphosphino)ethane)-based complex.

    The mixture of cis and trans-[RuCl2(dppe)2] (dppe: 1,2-bis-(diphenylphosphino)ethane) was prepared and the interaction with CT-DNA was evaluated by several methods, including UVvis DNA spectroscopic titration, viscosity, and electrochemical studies. Investigation suggests that [RuCl2(dppe)2] interacts moderately with CT-DNA. Interestingly, the cis- and trans-isomers interact differently with DNA, as proved by the square-wave voltammetry studies. Finally, the crystal structure of trans-[RuCl2(dppe)2]Cl was obtained from an electrochemical solution and studied in detail, which presents a distorted octahedral geometry and interatomic parameters different from those found in the trans- [RuCl2(dppe)2] complex. Crystal data for C52H48Cl4P4Ru: triclinic, space group P-1 (no. 2), a = 9.240(3) Å, b = 10.9290(18) Å, c = 11.993(3) Å, α = 78.707(11)°, β = 86.712(13)°, γ = 82.598(13)°, V = 1177.1(5) Å3, Z = 1, T = 293(2) K, μ(MoKα) = 0.732 mm-1, Dcalc = 1.467 g/cm3, 8434 reflections measured (6.934° ≤ 2Θ ≤ 51.986°), 4607 unique (Rint = 0.0973, Rsigma = 0.1171) which were used in all calculations. The final R1 was 0.0537 (I > 2σ(I)) and wR2 was 0.1347 (all data)

Sedimentary evolution and sequence stratigraphy of Ediacaran high-grade phosphorite-dolomite-shale successions of the Bocaina Formation (Corumba Group), Central Brazil : implications for the Neoproterozoic phosphogenic event.

    No full text
Extensive phosphorite deposition is observed in the Neoproterozoic after a prolonged hiatus during most of the Mesoproterozoic era. This event is thought to represent an important record of major palaeoenvironmental, palaeoceanographic and biotic changes that shaped Neoproterozoic ecosystems, suggesting close relationships between phosphogenesis and the preservation of key Ediacaran biotas. However, high-grade Ediacaran phosphorite deposits are relatively uncommon, diminishing the opportunity to test current phosphate mineralization–deposition models and their implications for Neoproterozoic research. In this scenario, widespread Ediacaran phosphorite–dolomite–shale successions of the Bocaina Formation (Corumba Group–Central Brazil) are poorly explored in international literature. Nevertheless, recent advances in phosphate exploration gave access to continuous drill core sections and freshly opened mine pits, revealing an unprecedented record of complex phosphatic successions featuring the occurrence of Ediacaran micro-fossils assigned to the Doushantuo–Pertatataka assemblages. This work seeks to constrain main lithofacies, sequence stratigraphy and depositional settings from these phosphatic successions in order to analyse the sedimentary evolution of the unit under the current Neoproterozoic phosphorite research frame-work. These results indicate that the Bocaina Formation records secular sustained phosphate deposition. These deposits are related to unprecedented, microbialite reef rim phosphorites deposited during a lower accretionary rimmed platform stage, followed by the deposition of Doushantuo-like, whole platform phosphorites associated with a later, drowned platform stage, there-fore, reinforcing the evidence for the operation of strong allogeneic controls on phosphate mineralization–concentration. In addition, this study concludes that fossiliferous Ediacaran phosphatic deposits such as the Bocaina Formation are important to understanding Neoproterozoic phosphogenic events, because they may record the transition from a Precambrian to Phanerozoic-like phosphogenesis associated with the instauration of the Ediacaran–Cambrian phosphatic taphonomic window. This evidence hints that the growing dataset from the Bocaina Formation may bring new, exciting perspectives for Neopro-terozoic research as a whole

This research analyzes the concept and characterization of contemporary forms of slave labor in the context of new work configurations developed in the digital age. The main objective is to formulate a conceptualization and determine a legal characterization of what sociologist Ricardo Antunes has called “digital slavery”. The object that is intended to be researched are factual situations that can be legally characterized as slave labor in labor relations mediated by digital platforms (uberized labor). The theoretical framework chosen to confront sociological theory is the conceptualization and characterization of contemporary slave labor in the light of the principle of human dignity and its corollary Fundamental Right to Decent Work. The research is classified, in terms of genre, theoretical, and the procedures used involved, essentially, the collection and analysis of doctrinal, normative and jurisprudential content. The legal-dogmatic approach was adopted as a theoretical-methodological aspect. The investigation has an interdisciplinary character insofar as it intends to establish a direct dialogue with the Sociology of Work and, from there, discuss the legal characteristics that are identified in that construction. In addition, the contributions of Philosophy, History and Linguistics (semantics) to the proposed theme are undeniable and direct, respecting the limitations of the research. In the end, it was possible to conclude for the possibility of legal characterization of "digital slavery", in the criminal, civil-labor and administrative-tax fields, based on an evolutionary interpretation of the norms that prohibit slavery in the internal and international spheres, in an expansion concept in the light of the Fundamental Right to Decent Work, enabling the revelation of “new” rights to “new” subjects of law previously hidden from state protection

The role of the pedagogue in non-school education spaces has become a growing field of investigation in the area of education. This finding may be related to the current training demands required by contemporary society and with Resolution CNE/CP no 01/2006, which established the guidelines for the Pedagogy course and highlighted the need for the course to provide knowledge about non-school spaces. The research presented here sought to investigate how the training and professional trajectory of pedagogues who work in non-school education spaces, specifically, in treatment and health promotion spaces (hospitals, centers and other units linked to the area of health), spaces for the promotion of culture (museums and other cultural facilities) and spaces for deprivation of liberty (prisons, penitentiaries, socio-educational centers), in the State of Minas Gerais. As specific objectives, the investigation proposed to characterize the professional profile of the pedagogues who work in non-school education spaces in the Minas Gerais scenario; understand how the training in the Pedagogy course took place based on the subjects’ perception; identify how the professional insertion of pedagogues in non-school education spaces occurred; explain the factors that interfere with the professional performance of pedagogues in non-school education spaces. This is a qualitative study that adopted bibliographic, documentary and field research as technical procedures. The questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used as data collection instruments. To treat the collected data, the content analysis technique was used. The data produced indicated that, in the perception of the pedagogues and the pedagogue interviewed, the higher education institutions where they and he completed their graduation offered the Pedagogy course aimed at school education, regardless of the time in which it was carried out. The findings attested that training for non-school education spaces has been shown to be insufficient or has not been included in Pedagogy courses, as training for teaching and the school environment is prioritized. The most common reason given by pedagogues and pedagogues for joining non-school education spaces is the interest in working outside the school space. The factors that interfere in the professional performance of pedagogues and pedagogues refer to the articulation between the area of education and the final area of the institution, the mobilization of pedagogical knowledge and collective work. Pedagogues and pedagogues carry out activities intrinsically related to the education of the target audience linked to the spaces investigated in this research, with the organization of pedagogical work being a common action for all professionals. Based on the data evidenced and based on the interest that the pedagogues and the pedagogue expressed in non-school education spaces, it is stated that training for these spaces is a training necessity. It is argued that the training of pedagogues for non-school education spaces must be systematically included in the Pedagogy course and that the peculiarities of performance in each of these spaces must be known in greater depth with a view to achieving more consistent training

Supporting decision-making process on higher education dropout by analyzing academic, socioeconomic, and equity factors through machine learning and survival analysis methods in the latin american context.

    No full text
The prediction of university dropout is a complex problem, given the number and diversity of variables involved. Therefore, different strategies are applied to understand this educational phenomenon, although the most outstanding derive from the joint application of statistical approaches and computational techniques based on machine learning. Student Dropout Prediction (SDP) is a challenging problem that can be addressed following various strategies. On the one hand, machine learning approaches formulate it as a classification task whose objective is to compute the probability of belonging to a class based on a specific feature vector that will help us to predict who will drop out. Alternatively, survival analysis techniques are applied in a time-varying context to predict when abandonment will occur. This work considered analytical mechanisms for supporting the decision- making process on higher education dropout. We evaluated different computational methods from both approaches for predicting who and when the dropout occurs and sought those with the most- consistent results. Moreover, our research employed a longitudinal dataset including demographic, socioeconomic, and academic information from six academic departments of a Latin American university over thirteen years. Finally, this study carried out an in-depth analysis, discusses how such variables influence estimating the level of risk of dropping out, and questions whether it occurs at the same magnitude or not according to the academic department, gender, socioeconomic group, and other variables
