Introduction: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a serious endemic disease in many tropical and subtropical countries, with a strong incidence in Brazil. The disease is transmitted by the bite of infected female phlebotomine sandflies, with dogs being the main urban reservoirs of the parasite. The diverse clinical profile and the long incubation period are challenges for the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). Recombinant proteins from Leishmania spp. have been studied as antigens that can increase the accuracy of serological tests. Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of the recombinant protein rLb6H, from Leishmania braziliensis, in comparison to the reference antigens rK39 and rK28, from L. donovani, prioritizing the identification of subclinical infected dogs. Material and Methods: Serum IgG reactivity to rLb6H, rK28, and rK39 recombinant proteins was assessed in dogs with previously parasitological confirmation of CVL, subdivided according to their clinical status, using immunoenzymatic assay (ELISA). Diagnostic accuracy of each ELISA was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: While all antigens showed a better performance in detecting CVL in symptomatic dogs (SD), detection of CVL in the oligosymptomatic (OD) and
asymptomatic (AD) groups was lower, but rLb6H achieved high sensitivity for asymptomatic CVL. Interestingly, the most reactive CVL samples to rK28 were barely detected by rLb6H, while the less reactive to rK28, mostly from the AD group, presented higher reactivity to rLb6H. Conclusion: The recombinant protein rLb6H showed utility in the detection of asymptomatic CVL, displaying a complementary reactivity to rK39 and rK28. Thus, these results suggest that rLb6H could be incorporated into multi-antigen strategies, to increase diagnostic accuracy of CVL.Introdução: A leishmaniose visceral (LV) é uma doença endêmica grave em muitos países tropicais e subtropicais, tendo forte incidência no Brasil.
Claudia Octavia : praise and criticism from a woman.
Octavia is paradoxically presented by the sources. On the one
hand, she is seen as an ideal wife because she is weak and has no relevant
political role in the imperial house. On the other hand, being weak, she does
not occupy properly the position that should be filled by the emperor’s
wife and weakens the imperial house. This article evaluates this paradox
and examines whether the sources described Octavia and her acts or that
information should be taken as the composition of a portrait that is drawn
in interaction with the other members of the imperial household
Neste contexto, a presente dissertação
Lateritic soils, available in extensive areas of the brazilian territory, are materials of great
relevance for engineering mainly due to the magnitude of their spatial geographic distribution.
These soils are characteristic because they present specificities in relation to their behavior,
mainly due to climatic conditions and geological formation processes, thus, these soils present
atypical behavior if evaluated using methodologies developed for soils formed in temperate
zones. In this context, this dissertation aimed to study a sample of laterite soil collected in a
deposit area in the state of Pará, in the following aspects: physical, chemical, mineralogical and
mechanical, in order to obtain data that, when evaluated together, contribute to a better
understanding of its behavior geomechanics. Therefore, physical characterization tests were
carried out, classification using conventional and specific methodologies for tropical soils
(MCT - Tropical Compacted Miniature, expedited tablet method and methylene blue adsorption
test), permeability and tests for geomechanical characterization (triaxial CIU and CID, direct
shear and oedometric densification), in addition to chemical and mineralogical studies using
the techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermo-gravimetry (ATG), Thermo-differential
(ATD), pH determination and chemical analysis total through X-ray Fluorescence (XRF). The
results showed that the soil under study is a laterite clay (LG’), with a low activity coefficient
and with kaolinite as the predominant clay mineral. Furthermore, it was observed that the
geomechanical behavior of the soil in question is directly influenced by its chemical and
mineralogical composition
ANRIL, H19 and TUG1 : a review about critical long non‑coding RNAs in cardiovascular diseases.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. They are non-transmissible diseases that affect the cardiovascular system and have different etiologies such as smoking, lipid disorders, diabetes, stress, sedentary lifestyle and genetic factors. To date, lncRNAs have been associated with increased susceptibility to the development of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, angina and heart failure. In this way, lncRNAs are becoming a very promising point for the prevention and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this review highlights the most important and recent discoveries about the mechanisms of action of the lncRNAs ANRIL, H19 and TUG1 and their clinical relevance in these pathologies. This may contribute to early detection of cardiovascular diseases in order to prevent the pathological phenotype from becoming established
Dynamics of antibiotic resistance agents during sludge alkalinization treatment.
This study aimed to assess the removal of antimicrobial resistance agents (antibiotics, antibiotic resistant bacteria - ARB, and antimicrobial resistance genes - ARGs) from aerobic and anaerobic sludges treated with quicklime (chemical alkalinization). Different mixing ratios (25%, 35%, and 45%) and contact times (2 h and 72 h) were evaluated. The findings revealed that anaerobic sludge responded more effectively to alkaline treatment, achieving better removal rates of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs compared to aerobic sludge. The 45% lime treatment yielded the highest antibiotic removal rates, with average reductions of 19% in aerobic sludge and 28% in anaerobic sludge. The 35% lime treatment was the most effective in reducing ARGs across both types of sludge (average removal of 2 logs). The 25% lime treatment proved most efficient for removing ARB, with average reductions of 4 logs (aerobic) and 5 logs (anaerobic). The contact time between the sludge and quicklime also influenced the removal of resistance agents. An increase in the proportion of antibiotics and the absolute concentration of ARB and ARGs was observed after 72 h compared to the samples analyzed after 2 h of contact. This increase was more pronounced in aerobic sludge samples treated with 35% and 45% lime. Despite the overall reduction, none of the monitored resistant genes or bacteria were completely eradicated in both sludge samples, raising concerns about their potential dissemination into the environment
A metodologia é eminentemente teórica. The rapid development of means of mass communication witnessed in recent decades has led to a true technological revolution with remarkable impacts on today's societies. Sharenting is one of the recent phenomena emerging from the democratization of the internet as a tool for communication, information, and relationships. The purpose of this study is to present the phenomenon of sharenting, its context, and its risks and to verify whether the application of parental civil liability is feasible in cases where the practice causes harm to children. Such analysis will be conducted in light of the theory of civil liability and in consideration of other consolidated legal institutions in Brazilian Law, especially in view of the parental authority and guided by the principle of children’s comprehensive protection. The hypothesis is that there are situations in which sharenting may constitute unlawful conduct and meet all the necessary elements for the characterization of civil liability, so that parents may be subject to an obligation to compensate the child for the damages. The methodology is predominantly theoretical. A qualitative and exploratory research was conducted, adopting a juridical- comprehensive investigation, aiming at the decomposition of the legal problem into its various aspects, relations, and levels, including interdisciplinary aspects. Contextualization was made not only in the legal sphere but also in the social sphere, understanding that the legal problem stems primarily from social reality. Among legal areas, dialogue was especially carried out between Family Law and Civil Liability, with brief references to Constitutional Law. The conclusion obtained indicates the possibility of applying civil liability in the event of damage caused by sharenting, when the paternal conduct that caused the damage is negligent, reckless or constitutes an abuse or omission in the exercise of parental authority. It is also understood that the quantification of liability will depend on factors such as the seriousness of the damage, the degree of reprehensibility of the conduct, its recurrence, among others. Civil liability is therefore added to other instruments capable of promoting comprehensive child protection
Assessing chemostratigraphic and biostratigraphic correlation of Ediacaran phosphorites - Bocaina, Khesen and Doushantuo Formations : diachronic, local signals of the Neoproterozoic phosphogenic-taphonomic event.
The Neoproterozoic phosphogenic event records biotic and biogeochemical changes that seem to indicate intrinsic relationships between phosphogenesis and phosphatic fossil preservation. However, chemo-litho and biostratigraphic correlations conducted on fossiliferous, phosphatic successions of the Doushantuo Formation, South China, evidence a highly heterogeneous record, featuring diachronic depositional ages, variable taxonomic diversity and inconsistent, “noisy” δ13C records. Similar detailed chemo-litho and biostratigraphic correlations targeted in high-grade phosphorite strata have not been performed along Ediacaran units elsewhere. Considering the significance and scarcity of Ediacaran high-grade phosphorite strata, establishing a comprehensive correlation framework within and between those units is fundamental to understanding Ediacaran biogeochemical and biotic evolution. This work aims to integrate new δ13C isotope stratigraphy, and existing Doushantuo-Pertatataka acritarch assemblages and geochronological records from Bocaina (Brazil), Khesen (Mongolia) and Doushantuo (China) Formations. Phosphaterich strata in those units feature inconsistent δ13C signatures characterized by negative values showing large bed-to-bed variations, possibly reflecting local modification of original marine signals by phosphogenesis, suggesting caution against the use in global/regional chemostratigraphic correlation. The record of phosphatized acritarch assemblages shows contrastive taxonomic diversities, and a small number of common taxa including Megasphaera. Whereas the presence of biozonal Doushantuo Formation taxa on Khsesen Fm, resonates with growing views of strong environmental resilience and large temporal ranges of acanthomorph acritarchs throughout the Ediacaran-early Cambrian, the scarcity of similar taxa in the Bocaina Fm may question the reliability of Doushantuo Fm acritarch biozones in other paleogeo-graphic or paleoenvironmental scenarios. Alternatively, the low taxonomic diversity recorded in Bocaina and Khesen Fms may also reflect the effects of the late Ediacaran decline in acritarch diversity. Further, combined evidence of selective paleoenvironmental phosphatization, local geochemical signals, narrow time spans and heterogeneous taxonomic diversity found in phosphatized DPK acanthomorph assemblages indicate the local nature of Ediacaran phosphatic fossil preservation events. Finally, evidence for diachronic preservation between high-grade phosphatic strata and phosphatized microfossils show non-causal relationships between Ediacaran phosphogenesis and phosphatic fossil preservation, highlighting the punctuated, intrinsic local nature of those events
The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between attendance at cultural events and cultural,
economic, and social capital of vocational technical education students of Ouro Preto city (Minas Gerais, Brazil) having as theoretical reference the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu. For the execution of this purpose, questionnaires were applied in vocational schools. We sought to investigate indicators of these capitals attributed to respondents through descriptive statistical analysis and ordinal logistic regressions. A positive relationship was found between attendance at cultural centers and a person’s cultural capital, inherited cultural capital, and economic capital. In addition to these factors, the social aspect suggests that attendance at cultural events is not necessarily tied to individual or family factors. The study presented intends to contribute to broaden the debate on public access to free events in the city
Comparative study of a novel lateral flow rapid test with conventional serological test systems for the diagnosis of canine leishmaniosis in Croatia and Brazil.
Control of canine infections with Leishmania infantum (L. infantum), a major zoonotic disease in Brazil and southern Europe, is becoming increasingly important due to its close proximity to humans, the increasing import of dogs from endemic regions and the impact of climate change on vector spreading. Simple, rapid and reliable diagnostic tests are therefore needed to detect infected dogs. Here, we re-evaluated different serological methods for the diagnosis of canine leishmaniosis (CanL) in Croatia and Brazil. The diagnostic performance of the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and the VetLine® Leishmania ELISA (GSD Frankfurt, Germany) was compared with three rKLi8.3-based diagnostic test systems, the rKLi8.3 ELISA (GSD Frankfurt, Germany), the INgezim® Leishma CROM (GSD Madrid, Spain) lateral flow test (LFT) and the VetBlot® Leishmania LineBlot (GSD Frankfurt, Germany). CanL symptomatic dogs were efficiently diagnosed by all tests, except the VetLine® Leishmania ELISA, which is based on whole Leishmania antigens. The advantage of rKLi8.3 was also observed in oligo- and asymptomatic dogs from Brazil and Croatia, although with reduced diagnostic efficiency compared to symptomatic dogs. Similar to IFAT and rKLi8.3 ELISA, the LFT did not cross-react with other common canine pathogens; it showed very high specificity for healthy dogs from endemic regions in both countries and did not react with healthy, vaccinated dogs in Brazil. In conclusion, serodiagnostic tests based on the rKLi8.3 antigens are superior to whole parasite antigens, and the LFT has the advantage of providing a laboratory-independent, rapid and specific diagnosis of CanL
