Towards a critique of “The consumer society” and the end of the transcendence of alienation in Jean Baudrillard.

    No full text
The article critically analyzes Jean Baudrillard's work "The Consumer Society", polemicizing against the author's theses on the nature and the roots and imbrications of consumption in capitalism in the second half of the 20th century. In this context, it seeks to return to classic theses and arguments of marxism, sustaining the impropriety of the detachment between the forms of consumption and the forms of activity, of production, and sociability that matrix and preponderate the interactions between partial complexes of the economic totality. Thus, Marx's analysis of the commodity fetish is unintelligible without consideration of commodity production and its capitalist specificity, nor can the category of alienation and the consideration of its conditions of possibility of supersumption be sufficiently considered, if they are detached from their internal, active, practical-sensible and social forms

Cosmoplatformization : digital platforms from the Global South.

    No full text
This article aims to challenge the concept of platformization based on dynamics specific to the Global South, considering the different ways of understanding technics in various cultural contexts, cosmotechnics, or ancestral technologies. Those aspects result from territorialized knowledge forming networks of networks when interacting with digital platforms. This process (a byproduct of digital platforms) involves many dynamics, such as data infrastructure, markets, and governance. To problematize and expand on the concept, we present examples of traditional peoples and their practices, supported by a narrative literature review, to contemplate a sympoietic practice and thus inspire other ways of thinking about platformization. This procedure led us to a proposal we call cosmoplatformization, which we hope can be included in future research. Keeping the theme of the digital and the South in mind, this text addresses particular technological appropriations that lead to technopolitical actions and an exercise in thinking about the digital experience and its theorization

    No full text
To evaluate the association between dietary quantity and variety, by extent and purpose of processing, and Framingham cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk score among rotating shift workers. Methods: The cross-sectional study included male shift workers. Dietary intake was assessed using a 24- h recall method conducted by trained interviewers. Food items were classified using two approaches: the first was based on the amount of food consumed in each food group. Fruits, vegetables, and legumes (FVL) intake, is classified as recommended at 400 g per day by WHO guidelines. Ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) were analyzed based on tertiles of daily caloric contribution. The second approach, the Nova dietary diversity score (DDS-Nova) assessed the variety of consumed items within each food group, assigning points for each unique item consumed, irrespective of quantity or frequency. The CVD-risk score was evaluated using the Framingham coronary heart disease risk score, categorizing participants as low risk (<5%) or intermediate to high risk (5%). Descriptive, univariate, and multivariate logistic regression were used, with adjustments made for age, skin color, schooling, duration of shift work, physical activity, body mass index and total caloric intake. Results: The study involved 213 participants, with an average age of 38.67 years (±6.96), a minimum of 26 and a maximum of 60. The majority (62.4%) were between 30 and 40 years old; 49.3% identified themselves as brown; 56.8% had completed high school; and 79.3% were married. The Framingham CVD-risk score indicated that 56.2% were at low risk (<5%) and 43.7% at intermediate to high risk (5%). The average consumption of FVL was 272.32 g (±350.43), with 70.4% meeting the recommendation of 400 g/day. Participants consumed an average of 3.46 fresh food items, 3.74 minimally processed food items, 2.54 processed food items and 3.39 ultra-processed food items. In the multivariate model, consuming 400 g/ day of FVL reduced the likelihood of cardiovascular risk 5% by 2.12 times (OR: 0.47; 95%CI: 0.23e0.98). Each additional item of fresh food reduced the risk by 49.2% (OR: 0.67; 95%CI: 1.01e1.66), while each additional item of ultra-processed food increased the risk by 30.0% (OR: 1.30; 95%CI: 0.52e0.87). There was no significant association between the calorie intake of ultra-processed foods and cardiovascular risk. Conclusion: Both adequate consumption of FVL quantity and a greater variety of fresh-foods were associated with a lower chance of CVD-risk, while a higher variety of consumption of UPF items increased this chance

Estimating the number of states of a quantum system via the rodeo algorithm for quantum computation.

    No full text
In the realm of statistical physics, the number of states in which a system can be real- ized with a given energy is a key concept that bridges the microscopic and macroscopic descriptions of physical systems. For quantum systems, many approaches rely on the solution of the Schrödinger equation. In this work, we demonstrate how the recently developed rodeo algorithm can be utilized to determine the number of states associ- ated with all energy levels without any prior knowledge of the eigenstates. Quantum computers, with their innate ability to address the intricacies of quantum systems, make this approach particularly promising for the study of the thermodynamics of those systems. To illustrate the procedure’s effectiveness, we apply it to compute the number of states of the 1D transverse field Ising model and, consequently, its specific heat, proving the reliability of the method presented here

    No full text
Community-Based Tourism (CBT) are tourism management modes that have different foundations linked to Sustai- nable Local Development (SLD). However, their full reach has largely depended on interaction with other territorial actors, that is, on Territorial Public Governance (TPG). Based on this and the consideration that it is necessary to advance in understanding the subject, this work aims to identify how GPT mechanisms can involve the CBT in the SLD co-promotion process. This research was carried out through a case study in Paraty/RJ, as this territory has TPG spaces open to CBT initiatives and which discusses issues related to SLD. Data collection occurred through documen- tary surveys, direct observation and the application of a semi-structured questionnaire. Their interpretation came from the thematic content analysis technique. The results indicated that TPG can involve CBT in the SLD co-promotion process through: co-necessity; co-potentiality; co-effectiveness; and co-legitimacy. In this way, this work contributes to understanding the ability of TPG mechanisms to help CBT to co-promote endogenous and sustainable develop- ment of territories, which is a gap in the literature

A bibliographic and documentary research was conducted, based on WB reports. From a critical perspective, it analyzed the relationship between work and education, up to the HCT guidelines in international organizations within Brazilian educational policy, pointing to an education commodity captured as social (re)production for maintaining the hegemony of big capital

Public communication and open government : communication actions in the government of Minas Gerais (Brazil) under the principles of transparency, participation, and collaboration.

    No full text
Public communication can be understood as a strategy/action aimed at the public interest, promoting citizenship, and mobilizing collective debate and is directly linked to the concept of open government. International organizations and scholars conceptualize open government differently, using the principles of transparency, participation, and collaboration in their definition. This study aimed to analyze the influence of open government communication mechanisms and actions in the Government of Minas Gerais (Brazil). A qualitative-descriptive study was conducted using a case study involving 12 state secretariats. The results showed that, although they had a systemic perspective on communication, the interviewees pointed to greater relevance and priority for journalism actions in the secretariats’ communication departments and, consequently, in the promotion of open government. The events stood out in terms of participation and collaboration, functioning as a mechanism for building relationships and interacting with citizens and society’s representative groups. These groups have an indirect influence on the government, either through formal integration provided for in institutional procedures or through attempts at negotiation and pressure. The most common transparency actions presented were those relating to the publication of facts through the production of news and the creation of guidelines for the press

Considering what has already been written about radio in Brazil, we find gaps regarding the history of the equipment produced and distributed in the country. This perception motivated the existence of this study on the trajectory of a national factory that was a pioneer in challenging foreign sovereignty in the sector: Rádio Cacique, from São Paulo. To this end, we observed advertisements and news about the brand in the written press, from 1933 to 1943, a period between the creation of Cacique and the first steps of a partnership that would come with Philips, consolidated in 1949. We focused our analysis on the expressions of Brazilian identity and pride in the national industry cited by the company, as well as on market relevance and the technological innovations that marked the first decade of Cacique's existence
