Teaching the Teachers – A report on key events and activities run by the UAS Wildau Centre of Competence for Teaching in English

    No full text
The aim of this report is to present the results of activities recently undertaken by the UAS Wildau Centre of Competence for Teaching in English in order to illustrate the importance of the provision of English language support to the teaching staff in tertiary education. The article will focus on four main subjects: Reasons for setting up the Centre of Competence for Teaching in English, The role and position of the Centre, locally, nationally and Europe-wide, Key issues concerning teaching in English at tertiary level, Future activities. The report will argue that support for teachers is needed in order to not only meet the demands of universities for internationalization but also the demands of students who want to study in English. English language support for the teaching staff is therefore an issue that should take a high priority at universities where the traditional focus has been on the students’ language needs and not on the teachers’ language needs. Without a sustainable language programme and support for teachers there is a danger that some universities will not be able to benefit properly from the desire of foreign students to come to Germany to study

The Process of Second Language Acquisition and its Implications for Teaching

Die hier genannten Fakten dienen dem besseren Verständnis eines andauernden Lernprozesses und können für die Interpretation von Unterrichtsergebnissen herangezogen werdenThe progress of learners in the acquisition of a new language (L2) is often measured by standards set for teaching in the 1950’s by behaviourism. according to this view, the learner’s language is considered to be an incorrect version of the target language and mistakes are explained in terms of lack of practice. This approach was proved inaccurate by later language acquisition theories and research. Now it has been shown that the process of L2 development is characterized by both positive changes and regresses. L2 develops under the influence of many factors with formal instruction being only one of them. The L2 development depends on how the brain processes information, the cognitive maturity of the learner, previous linguistic experience, time limitations, the individual’s phychological characteristics and the social circumstances of learning. This paper examines three models of second language acquisition and teaching methods based on these models, with a specific focus on the characteristics of the learners’ developing speech. The facts in the article provide a better understanding of the ongoing learning process and can be used for the interpretation of classroom results

The Aquaporin Channel Repertoire of the Tardigrade Milnesium tardigradum

    No full text
Limno-terrestrial tardigrades are small invertebrates that are subjected to periodic drought of their micro-environment. They have evolved to cope with these unfavorable conditions by anhydrobiosis, an ametabolic state of low cellular water. During drying and rehydration, tardigrades go through drastic changes in cellular water content. By our transcriptome sequencing effort of the limno-terrestrial tardigrade Milnesium tardigradum and by a combination of cloning and targeted sequence assembly, we identified transcripts encoding eleven putative aquaporins. Analysis of these sequences proposed 2 classical aquaporins, 8 aquaglyceroporins and a single potentially intracellular unorthodox aquaporin. Using quantitative real-time PCR we analyzed aquaporin transcript expression in the anhydrobiotic context. We have identified additional unorthodox aquaporins in various insect genomes and have identified a novel common conserved structural feature in these proteins. Analysis of the genomic organization of insect aquaporin genes revealed several conserved gene clusters

    No full text
In this paper, the iLibrary system is introduced, which has been integrated and tested at the library of the Technical University of Applied Sciences in Wildau. The goal of this project is to develop an interactive information system for the improvement of virtual library services within the university’s library and in this manner make users more aware of all the benefits the library provides. The system concentrates mainly on the development and implementation of new software applications for devices such as smartphones, tablets and a multi-touch screen, as well as introducing new back-end applications for the improvement of existing services and processes. We will explain the features of this system, provide some practical experiences, and show how it can easily be adapted to any library

Combination of a Proteomics Approach and Reengineering of Meso Scale Network Models for Prediction of Mode-of-Action for Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors

In drug discovery, the characterisation of the precise modes of action (MoA) and of unwanted off-target effects of novel molecularly targeted compounds is of highest relevance. Recent approaches for identification of MoA have employed various techniques for modeling of well defined signaling pathways including structural information, changes in phenotypic behavior of cells and gene expression patterns after drug treatment. However, efficient approaches focusing on proteome wide data for the identification of MoA including interference with mutations are underrepresented. As mutations are key drivers of drug resistance in molecularly targeted tumor therapies, efficient analysis and modeling of downstream effects of mutations on drug MoA is a key to efficient development of improved targeted anti-cancer drugs. Here we present a combination of a global proteome analysis, reengineering of network models and integration of apoptosis data used to infer the mode-of-action of various tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cell lines expressing wild type as well as TKI resistance conferring mutants of BCR-ABL. The inferred network models provide a tool to predict the main MoA of drugs as well as to grouping of drugs with known similar kinase inhibitory activity patterns in comparison to drugs with an additional MoA. We believe that our direct network reconstruction approach, demonstrated on proteomics data, can provide a complementary method to the established network reconstruction approaches for the preclinical modeling of the MoA of various types of targeted drugs in cancer treatment. Hence it may contribute to the more precise prediction of clinically relevant on- and off-target effects of TKIs

The author carried out a project on this subject and presented the results at CTR’s Open Day on 23rd March 2012 at King’s College in London [Eylert: 2012]. The key point of the study is the role of services in the telecommunication business and its development in the role of social networks in modern telecommunication media. The report takes a look at the implication of new services in mobile telecommunications regarding their influence on the society and vice versa. A specific example is given in the use of Facebook through smartphones

Living on the Coke side of thirst: The Coca-Cola Company and responsibility for water shortage in India

    No full text
Making soft drinks requires fresh water – lots of it, and not only for the bottled content but more for the industrial production process. Water sourcing has become a critical issue for The Coca-Cola Company, the world’s leading beverage manufacturer, particularly for its India subsidiary. Coca-Cola India has come under intense criticism for competing for ground water with agriculture and household use in water-deprived regions. For some ten years, its bottling plants have been accused of stealing water from surrounding villages. Evidence suggests the company has indeed been somewhat responsible for water shortages, and Indian courts have held the firm liable, even going so far as closing a plant and demanding millions of dollars in compensation for damages. Not only Coca-Cola India but also its parent, The Coca-Cola Company based in Atlanta, have recognized the water issue as a major social and environmental CSR challenge with the potential to harm the international reputation and the international brand. Coca-Cola has been investing in innovative technology to reduce its water use and is engaging in community outreach campaign to repair and im-prove its stakeholder relations. The article outlines the water dilemma and analyzes the firms’ global and local responses

Development of an Antigen-DNAzyme Based Probe for a Direct Antibody-Antigen Assay Using the Intrinsic DNAzyme Activity of a Daunomycin Aptamer

    No full text
G-Quadruplex (G-4) structures are formed when G-rich DNA sequences fold into intra- or intermolecular four-stranded structures in the presence of metal ions. G-4-hemin complexes are often effective peroxidase-mimicking DNAzymes that are applied in many detection systems. This work reports the application of a G-rich daunomycin-specific aptamer for the development of an antibody-antigen detection assay. We investigated the ability of the daunomycin aptamer to efficiently catalyze the hemin-dependent peroxidase activity independent of daunomycin. A reporter probe consisting of biotinylated antigen and daunomycin aptamer coupled to streptavidin gold nanoparticles was successfully used to generate a colorimetric readout. In conclusion, the daunomycin aptamer can function as a robust alternative DNAzyme for the development of colorimetric assays
