What potential is held by resources rescued and preserved by cultural asset rescue? This report analyzes this question through museum exhibitions, in particular, exhibitions at the National Museum of Japanese History, and relates the "history" indicated by such resources. Here, resources rescued from the Oi household (Ogata residence) in Kogoshio, Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture and in its vicinity are considered as one case. First, bondana Obon altars are facilities set up temporarily for ancestral rites with the passage of time, but the fact that it is set up in a room inside the house different from the one housing the family Buddhist altar, adjoining the family Shinto altar, is worthy of note. In addition to the ihai Buddhist memorial tablet, emblems of ancestral rites not originating in the jidan temple-household affiliation system, such as a chahai memorial tablet, are displayed. This indicates that the Obon altar is not simply a component of an annual event but its existence is filled with the "history" of ancestral rites of the Oi household. Second, the medicine chest represents the pharmaceutical state of Kogoshio, not only Oi, that they had on hand medicines brought from far away by medicine merchants. Analyzing medicine found at the Ogata residence together with medical traditions of the kind, it can be observed that much information was accumulated for the maintenance of health. Though the information not so much in the consciousness of everyday life, it was contained in the medicine chest and the staircase chest containing it. Reviewing the collected memory with the medicine chest as the axis reveals that the Oi household had played the role of accumulating various knowledge and media related to medicine since premodern times. This indicates that the "history" of the survival strategy of maintaining a healthy daily life was made possible by knowledge related to the medicine chest. This was due to interaction with a large area of the entirety of East Japan, far beyond Kogoshio alone. This indicates that accumulation of information for the survival and maintenance of the household, which could be called the framework for settled life, was a product of "history" supported by the movement of people and information over a long period of time.departmental bulletin pape

Currently, in Japan, there is a trend of frequent large-scale natural disasters due to great earthquakes, large tsunamis, great typhoons, low atmospheric pressure, and other causes, and there is an increased social need for resource exhibit facilities to document the disaster and pass on the memory. However, a basic philosophy in establishing such facilities and a basic methodology of exhibit design have not been set, and established facilities have many problems in operation management and exhibit design. Further, additional facilities are being established without concrete attempts to resolve the situation. This paper examines disaster resource exhibit facilities of earthquakes and other disasters and points out problems in the establishment phase and operation management of the facility and problems and issues in exhibit design. Additionally, it presents the case of Rias Ark Museum of Art's permanent exhibition Documentary of East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and History of Tsunami Disaster as an attempt at a solution, outlining the sequence of events leading up to its establishment and indicating the exhibition techniques used in this exhibition. Finally, this paper attempts to redefine the significance of the existence of disaster resource exhibit facilities and the necessity of establishing them, from a unique perspective based on the results arising from this exhibit. "How will the universal mission be set for establishing disaster resource exhibits and disaster resource-related museums and managing their operation? How should humans go on to face works and phenomena of nature beyond human understanding?" Finding the answers to these questions is the ultimate goal to be attained by this paper, and it could be said that the answer arrived at is a philosophy which should be used as a base for debating this theme. At the Rias Ark Museum of Art, the answers to these questions are being made manifest through the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster as it is studied and explored, continued to be recorded and investigated, and the results are exhibited and made public. This paper presents that philosophy as one case and attempts to indicate a path to optimize the social function of new disaster resource exhibits to be established in the future by disseminating it to existing museums or researchers such as museum curators.departmental bulletin pape

The Militarization of the 1960s Student Movements : Analysis of Strategies and Tactics in the University of Tokyo Struggle

This paper aims to present a more multifaceted and three-dimensional image of the student movements that were frequent and widespread in the 1960s, especially given the tendency of past research to positioning them solely as responses or challenges to large-scale social changes. To this end, this paper analyzed the strategies and tactics evinced in the social movements theories as a novel approach to the 1960s student movement. This paper particularly examines the strategies and tactics employed during the University of Tokyo Struggle that occurred between 1968 and 1969 at the University of Tokyo. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, direct action strategies were adopted in the University of Tokyo Struggle, which were inclined more toward counter-violence than non-violence. Thus, one's physical strength or stamina, his relative merits in the struggle, and his eligibility to participate in the conflict were linked. Second, in the final stages of the University of Tokyo Struggle, the counter-violence tilted toward a competent military battle, and the participants' practices was militarized. Next, two factors led the direct action strategy in the 1960s student movements to counter-violence. One was the tendency toward physical combats and militarization possessed by both new and old leftist movements, and the other was the participants' third worldism that was influenced by decolonization and independence endeavors that occurred in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This paper further demonstrates that these findings could also contribute to the gender studies on the 1960s student movement by introducing the concept of military masculinity. The gender-based division of labor and the marginalization of women in the 1960s student movements exerted substantial influence on the women's liberation movement that began in the 1970s. Studies of the 1960s student movements from the perspective of gender theories have accumulated a body of knowledge that attest to this reality. The information contained in this paper can potentially be developed in several directions in the future. By approaching the motivations and experiences of the women participants in the 1960s student movements from the perspective of military masculinity, it will be possible to further illuminate the militarization of the 1960s student movements and the influence of such actions on the evolution of the movements.departmental bulletin pape

This thesis is an examination of cultural property rescue networks, viewed from the perspective of one region in Japan. Tono, in Iwate Prefecture, had a historical network with the municipalities of the Sanriku Coast, and also had public and private networks with museums and curators in the prefecture. Although Tono was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake, cultural property rescue activities were successfully carried out along the Sanriku Coast. My involvement with cultural property rescue work evolved over time from personal networks, to public networks, and again returned to private networks. Among the materials rescued from the town of Otsuchi was a precious discovery that revealed disaster relief efforts in Tono City after the Sanriku Tsunami disaster of 1933. The network that was cultivated through the Great East Japan Earthquake was able to rescue materials in Tono, damaged by typhoon #10, in 2016, and a new network was established.departmental bulletin pape

[Article] Creating a Basis for a Dynamic Grasp of Annual Events : For Organizing Multiple Resources by Hierarchy and Concurrency

This report uses a diary resource found in cultural asset rescue as a starting point to present the procedures necessary for reconstituting chronological descriptions of folk culture using multiple resources. Below, the intent is to compare multiple documented resources of a specific area to facilitate the organization of data by hierarchy and concurrency while understanding the attributes of each resource. Annual events on a large scale such as municipalities and prefectures have been recognized, with data on annual events having been accumulated in reports of local museums and resource centers or in records at the local government level. This kind of resource, collected in a certain region over a certain time, gains significance only when compared to or related to other resources. There should be a discussion for the comprehensive use of the great amount of data accumulated in each area. However, simply laying out those resources next to each other will not necessarily lead to an overall grasp of annual events. This is because various biases or variation in the degree of detail can be seen among these resources, depending on the compiler's objective or interest or the scope of investigation. For this reason, this report examines the case of the survey report of annual events in the Kogoshio region of Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, presents the issues encountered in arranging data by concurrency and hierarchy to account for the biases among reports, and provides a concrete example of the work process. The data obtained from this work will become a basic resource of the sequential change process of the folk culture of the area. It is also vital as a resource to inspect the degree of changes in folk culture, the facts of specific changes, and the various factors which induce change.departmental bulletin pape

The Problem of Disciplinary Punishment at the Department of Literature in the Final Stages of the University of Tokyo Struggle and the Assumed Proposal of Blank Slate

On December 23, 1968, at the final stages of the University of Tokyo Struggle, Acting President Ichiro Kato requested the All-Campus Joint Struggle Student League (Zenkyoto) to come to the table for a final discussion. It is assumed that he proposed a "blank slate" on the issue of student suspension from the Department of Literature, but the League rejected this discussion. This assumption is not true. The author investigate the reasons why a student was suspended from the Department of Literature, why the League continued to demand a "complete revocation" of that suspension, whether or not the riot police's battle against students at Yasuda Auditorium on January 18 and 19, 1969 could have been avoided, and why the struggle was prolonged up to December 1969 only at the Department of Literature. The problem of disciplinary punishment at the Department of Literature during the University of Tokyo Struggle finds its roots in the indefinite suspension of Tadashi Nakano, a Department of Literature student who got into a scuffle with Associate Professor Hiroshi Tsukishima and grabbed the professor by his necktie and hurled violent words at him after the concluding meeting of the conference of students and professors at the Department of Literature on October 4, 1967. In the University Council, then Dean Tatsuro Yamamoto of the Department of Literature, exaggeratedly described Nakano's behavior as the usage of "violent language unworthy of a student" that was directed against some teachers, and decided to punish him. This statement was revised a month later but the modification has not been disclosed. Dean Kentaro Hayashi, who assumed office at the Department of Literature in November 1968, did not discuss the detailed facts of Nakano and Tsukishima's action, except for being placed under classroom arrest earlier in the same month, and maintained the official assertion of " impolite behaviour" by the student against the teacher. Professor Yozo Horigome, who took on the role of the Dean of the Department of Literature in August 1969. erased Nakano's suspension, but continued to claim that the suspension had been lawful and disregarded the fact that Tsukishima was the first to act violently. The disciplinary punishment at the Department of Literature was the second of two contentious issues of the University of Tokyo struggle. The first was the disciplinary punishment at the Department of Medicine that turned to be an erroneous punishment of an absentee student. After thisdepartmental bulletin pape

The Chronology of the Settlements of Early Mahan Period in the Upstream Area of the Yeongsan River and its Significance : Focusing on the Stages of the Hard Mumun Pottery (Part II)

In this paper, I examined the chronology of the settlements of the hard Mumun pottery period in the upstream area of the Yeongsan River, which is identifiable as the early period of Mahan, and its significance. First, I presented a suggestion of the chronology of the earthenware excavated from the shell mounds of the Haenum Gungok-ri Mausoleum (Hanyang-gun), a typical compound ruin of this period, based on the existing research results. Next, I examined each of the three stages of hard Mumun pottery in regard to the actual condition of the residential sites of the Three Kingdoms period, which has been a popular topic for discussions in recent years. In the first stage, hard Mumun pottery coexisted with the triangular clay band pottery, and I estimate it to be from around the first century B.C. to A.D. 1. This is when the settlement sites of a non-facility type, which were a degenerated form of the Songguk-ri settlement sites, were constructed mainly in the Gwangju area. The second stage is the simplified period of the hard Mumun pottery, and I estimate it to be from around A.D. 1 to the middle of the second century. This is when the plane figures of the residential sites were circular, rectangular, oval, etc.; the groups of pits clustered to a certain extent and the remains of grooves are recognizable. What is noticeable is the existence of the Hon-dong ruins, which were the central living space, and the Shinchang-dong ruins, which were the center of foreign trade. It is thought that the location of these ruins probably played a central role in the assimilation of various cultures from outside and in spreading them to the surrounding areas. The third stage is the period when the hard Mumun pottery was excavated alongside the textile-printed pottery from typical settlements of the Three Kingdoms period, and I estimate it to be from around the mid-second to the fourth century A.D. The materials of the hard Mumun pottery are still mostly excavated from the settlement sites centered on Gwangju and Damyang, and there is a lack of materials concerning the surrounding areas. Therefore, there is a limit in doing research on the landscape of the settlements of this period and the process of the propagation in more detail. However, if more data is accumulated through future surveys, there is a high possibility that the research will progress rapidly.departmental bulletin pape

[Article] The Development of Diary Research in Folkloristics and Its Potential

    Get PDF
The aim of this report is to provide an overview of results of research based on diary resources in folkloristics and to reconsider its place. Several ways analysis of diary resources in folkloristics is effective have been pointed out. For example, diary resources are effective materials for reproducing folk culture of the past for which interviews are impossible to conduct. In particular, diaries which were recorded over a long period of time are considered important resources in investigating the sequential continuity and transformations of folk phenomena. Diary resources have also been called useful for quantitative data analysis which is quite difficult to discover from ordinary interviews. It is true that much research has been done based on such prospects and a certain amount of results have been attained. However, a sweeping statement that the use of written sources including diaries has only benefited folkloristics would be untrue. Excessive dependence on written resources is likely to close off the search for culture passed down orally, which has been the role played by folkloristics, along with the cycle of searching in daily life, which is woven by folkloristics. Thus, the writer's intent with this report is to readdress the relationship folkloristics has had with diary resources. This report investigates what kind of themes folklorists have extracted from diary resources, as well as what procedures were followed and what sort of developments such results caused in folkloristics. Through such investigations, this report restructures the denotation of folkloristics and points out the potential for comprehensive analysis of vocal resources and written resources by expanding on the connoted potential of diary research itself.departmental bulletin pape
