With the development of advanced image classification applications, the improvement of learning accuracy is more required. Recently, the feature extraction and learning methods for improving classification accuracy are progressing. In especially, deep learning approaches attract significant attention. The CNN (convolutional neural network) is widely used in deep learning for image data. When learning, it needs to use a massive number of image data with labels as a supervisor. However, if the number of labeled data is not sufficient, it fails to classify unknown data because it cannot cover the whole space of data. Especially the labeling works which require specialist skill takes high cost; it cannot expect to prepare an enough dataset. To overcome the limitation, a high-precision classification method from the small dataset is required. This study proposes a new learning method with small labeled data and its neighbor space. This method collects the neighbor samples with representative data in labeled data and learn its neighbor space as a cluster. The experiment results show the technique enables to learn sparse space as a cluster space effectively and can allow classification of the motif of Kosode byobu image.departmental bulletin pape

This study develops a new interactive exhibition system for Kosode byobu by using a simple reactive effects display method. For realistic experience for exhibition, the reproduction of space with objects and appreciators is a significant issue. Especially it is known that local illuminations such as BrDF, BSSRDF, and BTF methods are effective technique. However, the data acquisition cost from valuable historical objects becomes vast large. This study proposes a simple image collection method by using a hand-held camera and a spherical marker, then constructing reproduction images with image mosaic processing by using pyramid building and graph-cut. The experiment results show the proposed method enables the reproduce image within an 8% error, and realtime rendering in a large display.departmental bulletin pape

This article responds to the question posed by the National Museum of Japanese History: How is gender represented in historical exhibitions? Adopting the perspective that the purpose of museum exhibitions is to serve and inspire the public, the article considers how the museum can develop an effective way to incorporate gendered thinking and methods as it plans its exhibition, represents its artifacts and narrates the materials. The article first clarifies the concept and usage of the term "gender" and then introduces examples of gendered interpretations of archaeological findings and museum of exhibitions. The term "gender" cannot be easily translated into Japanese. Partly because there is no native Japanese term to translate "gender" into, the meaning of jendā in katakana syllabary remains opaque. Moreover, in Japanese, jenda tends to refer to a person's individual identity, not transformaive social or institutional situations, making it difficult to incorporate gendered thinking into effective social change toward greater gender equity. After considering the theoretical advance made by the so-called gender archaeologists, the article turns to a quantitative textual analysis of captions displayed at an Austrian exhibition and an innovative measures taken to expose the highly gendered practice that was found at the Manchester Museum. According to the analysis in Austria, humans carrying tools were typically assumed to be men, and women were involved only in a limited range of activities, with little contribution to political, economic, and survival activities. In the case of the Manchester Museum, there were more exhibits of males than females, and it was found and at both museums, that the stereotype modern gender roles were being socially reaffirmed through the displays and captions. Useful in addressing these issues is the concept of intersectionality, which goes beyond research frameworks such as gender, class, and race to examine how power imbalances in certain social and political contexts are compounded. Moreover, to avoid importing stereotyped modern gender roles into exhibitions, it is essential that the number of researchers who realize the importance of gender increases and that museums recognize the need to promote gender equality as anorganization.departmental bulletin pape

The goal of this study is to generate "metadata" of the images in digital archives and to use them for similar image retrieval system. Generally, bag-of-features [4], which is a histogram representation method for object recognition in images, uses feature points and local features calculated based on the grayscale distribution of pixels by using SIFT [3]. On the other hand, the deep learning approach [6] has attracted attention in the field of general object recognition as end-to-end learning, not local features oriented learning. The typical deep learning recognizes the whole structured object in the image; however, it misses significant sub-parts in the image. To overcome the issue, we divide an image into segments, extract features from each segment using deep learning, then apply bag-of-features using the clustering for the local features, and finally represents it as histogram expression reflects the metadata in the image. Furthermore, by using distance calculation representing the similarity of the cluster as comparing the histograms, the discriminant precision of a similar image could be improved, when the number of clusters is too small. The experiment result shows the effectiveness of generating metadata using BoF with deep learning, the distance evaluation method reflecting the relationship between clusters.departmental bulletin pape

Otake Dainichi Nyorai was a woman by the name of Take who worked as a servant in Edo and was enshrined in Dewa Province as the reincarnation of the Dainichi Nyorai Buddha. Futokoroni-Tamaru- Morokuzu (“A Scrapbook of Odds and Ends”) is a collection of surimono (a type of woodblock print) gathered by Senzo- Irifune, a rakugo performer in Edo during the Bakumatsu period. This collection contains an ichimaizuri (single page print) in monochromatic ink called “Otake Dainichi Nyorai Engi,” which was printed when a degaicho (public exhibition of treasures) was held for Otake Dainichi Nyorai in Edo in the second year of the Kaei era (1849). This paper makes use of this ichimaizuri to examine the origins and story of Otake Dainichi Nyorai in addition to examining surimono and related published documents in order to better understand the beliefs and culture of the Edo public through surimono. Analysis showed that Otake Dainichi Nyorai became widely accepted as a figure in Japanese syncretic Buddhism despite a lack of specific details regarding her origins and story. A great deal of publications were printed at the time of the degaicho in 1849, but the accounts vary due to being produced by multiple merchants for the purpose of boosting sales, thus creating doubt about their veracity. Otake Dainichi Nyorai was also seen as serving a role as entertainment; in addition to the publication of surimono and other ichimaizuri, fictional works were written, she was parodied as “otame dainashi warui” (a parodic mispronunciation of her name), and she was presented as a parodic bodhisattva rather than the reincarnation of Dainichi Nyorai. Not only an object of religious faith, she was rather a source of entertainment beyond faith to the people of Edo. The various publications circulated show that Otake Dainichi Nyorai served to advance and promote a phenomenon wherein faith and entertainment were intertwined.departmental bulletin pape
