    The modulation of Pacific Decadal Oscillation on ENSO-East Asian summer monsoon relationship over the past half-millennium

    Monsoon precipitation affects natural and social systems in East Asia, one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Monsoon precipitation variability is strongly influenced by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and may be related to the phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). However, a collective understanding of the long-term PDO-ENSO-monsoon relationship remains limited because related studies are almost exclusively based on short instrumental records. Although paleoclimate proxies for PDO and ENSO are currently available, there is a lack of high-quality proxies for East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) precipitation. Moreover, the strengthening of the ENSO-EASM relationship since the 1970s has raised the question of anthropogenic impact. Reconstructing EASM precipitation is thus crucial to understanding its variability under natural and anthropogenic forcings. In this study, we addressed these challenges using tree ring oxygen isotopes of red cypress (Chamaecyparis formosensis Matsum), a long-lived endemic tree species in Taiwan. We developed an annual-resolved, well-validated EASM precipitation proxy from AD 1533 to 2011 which explained 49 % of the variance in instrumental precipitation. In comparison with multiple paleoclimate proxies, we revealed that PDO persistently modulated the ENSO-EASM relationship over the past half-millennium. The ENSO-EASM relationship was enhanced during the positive PDO phases and dynamically weakened during the negative PDO phases, notably in the AD early-17th, 18th, and early to mid-20th centuries. The strengthened relationship since the 1970s concurred with an unusually high PDO and ENSO and fell within its natural variability. Nevertheless, as the amplitude of the PDO is predicted to weaken under warming, the modulation effects may become less predictable.journal articl

    本稿は福岡市南区弥永団地周辺をフィールドにして,聞き取り調査と総務省『家計調査年報』を手がかりにして,高度経済成長期の福岡市における魚類と肉類の購入数量を検証した。鮮魚の購入数量が1953年の69,761グラムから,1975年の21,135グラムまで激減する。サバ,アジの次に購入されるのが,年によりカレイ,イワシ,ブリ,タイと変化していく。マグロ,カツオ,サケの購入数量は微量で,高度経済成長期を通じて変化しない。肉類の購入数量は,1965年まで牛肉が一番であり,豚肉,鯨肉,鶏肉の購入数量はほぼ変わらない。1960年代後半から大きく変化し,豚肉,特に鶏肉の購入数量が激増する。肉類の購入数量の増加は急激で,1972年には肉類の購入数量が鮮魚購入量の倍以上になる。 1980年以降の鮮魚の購入数量について全国と福岡市を比較した。 1980年の全国の鮮魚の購入数量は,マグロ,サバ,カレイ,ブリ,イワシ,サンマ,アジ,カツオ,サケ,タイという順だった。魚種により増減がみられた。2020年はサケ,マグロ,ブリ,カツオ,サバ,アジ,サンマ,カレイ,イワシ,タイの順に変化した。 1980年の福岡市の鮮魚の購入数量は,サバ,イワシ,アジ,カレイ,タイ,ブリ,サンマ,カツオ,サケ,マグロという順であり,全国の魚種の割合とは異なった。2020年はサケ,ブリ,アジ,サバ,タイ,イワシ,カレイ,カツオ,マグロ,サンマの順である。サケが最上位となるのは全国の動向と同じで,平準化がみられる。マグロとカツオは60年以上購入数量が少ないままだった。観光資源としてごまサバが宣伝され,青魚を好むというが,2000年以降は減少している。This paper examined the purchase quantity of fish and meat in Fukuoka City during the period of high economic miracle, using the inter view survey and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications “Annual Report of Household Survey” as clues in the field around Yanaga Danchi, Minami-ku, Fukuoka City. The quantity of fresh fish purchased will drop sharply from 69,761g in 1953 to 21,135g in 1975. Next to mackerel and horse mackerel, flatfish, sardines, yellowtail, and sea bream are purchased depending on the year. The purchase quantity of tuna, bonito and salmon is very small and does not change throughout the period of high economic growth. Beef was the largest purchase quantity of meat until 1965, and the purchase quantity of pork, whale meat, and chicken was almost the same. It has changed significantly since the latter half of the 1960s, and the purchase quantity of pork, especially chicken, has increased dramatically. The increase in the purchase quantity of meat is rapid, and in 1972, the purchase quantity of meat will more than double the purchase quantity of fresh fish. A comparison was made between the whole country and Fukuoka City regarding the purchase quantity of fresh fish since 1980. In 1980, the number of fresh fish purchased nationwide was tuna, mackerel, flatfish, yellowtail, sardines, saury, horse mackerel, bonito, salmon, and sea bream. Increases and decreases were seen depending on the fish species. In 2020, it changed in the order of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, bonito, mackerel, horse mackerel, saury, flatfish, sardine, and sea bream. The purchase quantity of fresh fish in Fukuoka City in 1980 was in the order of mackerel, sardines, horse mackerel, flatfish, snapper, yellowtail, saury, bonito, salmon, and tuna, which was different from the ratio of fish species nationwide. In 2020, the order is salmon, yellowtail, horse mackerel, mackerel, sea bream, sardines, flatfish, bonito, tuna, and saury. The highest ranking of salmon is the same as the national trend, and leveling can be seen. Tuna and bonito have remained low in purchase quantity for over 60 years.
