    WRITER’S WAYS TO INTERACT WITH READERS IN THE TEXTS WRITTEN BY THE STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT IN MURIA KUDUS UNIVERSITY

    Written text is more complex than spoken text. The interac- tion between the sender and the receiver are not intensively reached. Readers can only give response without being known by the writer. This is why the writer should write the text in some consideration of leading the readers to read further or even give comments. This research is a qualitative research, which aims to find out the writer’s way to interact with readers in four components: 1) clause structure, 2) terms of address, 3) modality, 4) evaluating phenomena. The data of the research is the writer’s way of interacting with readers and the source is the texts written by the students of English Education Department in Muria Kudus University. The result of the research covers that most of the writers use statements and questions as the clause structure. The terms of address used are “we”, “you”, and “I”. The modality which is mostly used is medium degree such as “can”. The evaluating phenomena are about the sharing of life ex- perience. There are some other ways of  writer’s interaction with readers through texts that can be conducted in the next research

    APPRAISAL DEVICES REALIZING ATTITUDES IN BARACK OBAMA’S INAUGURAL SPEECH

    The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze Obama’s Attitudes  towards  phenomenon  happened  in  America  and  the world realized in the speech using the Appraisal System Analysis. The speech analysis was done by breaking down the speech into several clauses and analyzing them to find out the Appraisal Devices and the types of  Attitudes used. Analyzing the data, it could be inferred that the speech employed three kinds of Attitudes; Affect, Judgement, Appreciation. There were 323 clauses consist of 51 Af- fects, 155 Judgements, and 117 Appreciations. Positive Attitudes in the speech were used more than Negative Attitudes. Obama gave priorities to Positive Attitudes in presenting his speech because he was optimistic that the obstacles in his country would be solved and the condition of America would be better. The study revealed that Obama was a good orator with high capability and wonderful way of thinking

    APPRAISAL SYSTEM ON THE JAKARTA POST OPINION “A HUMAN RIGHTS MEMORIAL: JOKOWI AND THE SORCERER’S STONE”

    This study aims at examining the meaning of  text in detail through metafunctions  analysis with appraisal systems. The appraisal system is deployed in order to explore texts in detail from the perspectives of discourse semantics developed by James Martin and David Rose (2003). The data is taken from the opinion article column of the Jakarta Post (a national English newspaper in Indonesia), published on Thursday, October 23rd, 2014. The article entitled “A Human Rights Memorial: Jokowi and the Sorcerer’s Stone” written by Barikatul Hikmah. According to the appraisal systems of attitude text, the writer uses more positive option for affect the reader than the negative options. The dominant positive options are used in order to express the writer’s opinions, suggestions, and expectation to the Jokowi’s government, in term of Jokowi’s commitment to human rights enforcement and the importance of building a human rights memorial. The direct opinion for affect in emotional states category used around 13 expressions, and 4 words and phrases for showing the physical expressions. The implicit opinion of clause used in this article consist of 2 extraordinary behavior expressions and 3 metaphors expressions. In the amplifying of (gradable) attitudes text, the article is expressing the force of attitudes (intensifiers) that make it possible for us to compare things or to say how strongly we feel about someone or something by making comparison to others. Related to the source of attitude analysis, the text is a narrative with some clauses containing the affect values. The writer can be said to be fully responsible for all of the evaluation, and the sources of attitudes are attributable to the writer’s expectation

    IMPROVING ACTIVE LEARNING THROUGH STUDENTS’ POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS ON REPORT TEXT SPEAKING SKILL

    This study was carried out to improve active learning through students’ PowerPoint presentations on report text speaking skill in the third grade students of  class 9A of  SMP N 1 Bandungan2014/2015 academic year. The method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The study was carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of one meeting 200 minutes (block schedule). The data of this study was gathered through: (1) Student’ presentations, (2) observations, and (3) students consultation. The result of the study showed that there was improvement of active learning in the teaching and learning process of class 9A; 100% was active in group work, 100% was active in consulting their difficulties with the teacher, 79.2% was active in finding resources of report text material, 87.5% was active in asking questions and 90% was active in answering questions. From the last two indicators can be seen that there is improvement of  the active learning of  students’speaking skill in asking and answering questions. In conclusion active learning through students’ PowerPoint presentations could increase the active teaching and learning process of class 9A, especially on their report text speaking skill

    FUNCTIONS OF CODE SWITCHING IN AN ENGLISH CLASS

    Code Switching (CS) is shifting from one language to another in a conversation. It is a normal every day practice among people in the world for various reasons and usually an unconscious activity. This language switching might not be the whole sentence, but also can occur in brief phrases or words. Therefore, in this study, using CS as a medium of instruction was focused on. The objective of this study is to describe the functions of CS done  both by teacher and  students.The data for this study were collected at State Junor High School 18 of Purworejo on 12th and 13th July, 2013. The researcher chose the eighth grade VIII G class of SMP Negeri 18 Purworejo. The data were taken twice (two meetings; 2x80 minutes). There are 40 students and one English teacher, Ms. Titik Kusumawati, S.Pd. The data of the study were collected in the form of recorded class- room interaction with videocamera and the observer’s field notes. The two types of database were examined in order to identify what kinds of activity were involved in the teacher-student interaction. The analysis of the data was adobted from Sert (2005). The func- tions of student CS includes equivalence, floor holding, reiteration, and conflict control.     COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES IN THE CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN INDONESIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND A NATIVE SPEAKER

    Practicing conversations or dialogues in various context or situation is as the essential aspect for students because it smoothen their skill in communication and their English mastery. Whenever people use language to interact, one of the things people are do- ing with it is establishing a relationship between them; between the speaker speaking now and the person who will probably speak next. It means, strategies in communicating put an important role to reach the goal of the interaction or the communication.This study is to identify the communication strategies of In- donesian university students, especially students of the English De- partment Education Faculty of Muria Kudus University and native speaker used in communication in natural conversation and to find out the possible factors cause the choice of  the strategies in the conversation. The method applied in this study is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study are fourth semester students of English De- partment of Muria Kudus University and one native speaker. The data were obtained by inviting and asking the students and the na- tive speaker to have a conversation for around one hour. Then, the conversation was recorded by using camera. The recorded data were transferred into the printed one as a script. The data analysis was conducted in several ways, among other transcribing the recorded data, identifying each utterance and displaying the result in the table, classifying the utterances based on the type of strategies, and inter- preting the communication or the conversation.The results showed that there were 306 turns in the conver- sation between the students and the native speaker. The types of strategies used in the conversations were Circumlocution (C) for 38.98 % (23), followed by Language Switch (LS) for 15.3 % (9) and Topic Avoidance (TA) for 14.6 % (8), Literal Translation (LT) for 6.8 % (4), Mime (M) for 8.5 % (5), Word Coinage (WC) and Mes- sage Abandonment (MA) for 6.8 % (4), Appeal for Assistance (AA) for 5.6 % (3), and Approximation (A) for 3.39 % (2). The last find- ing showed that there were two main factors that cause the choice of the strategies in the conversations. They were proficiency of the speaker and features of the communicative situation. In the use of communication strategies, both students of Eng- lish Department Muria Kudus University and the native speaker try to have a relative balance of power relation without the domination of one person to others. Some factors which cause the use of the strategies are lack of meaning, social use aspect, speech, voice, and fluency. To improve students’ strategies in communication, they should practice their English more, so their speaking and their strategies will be improved. Besides, lecturers also should apply the contextual teaching in which the environment and culture are inserted into the topic

    STUDENTS’ LANGUAGE LEARNING STYLES: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC CASE STUDY AT UIN WALISONGO SEMARANG

    This research is aimed at knowing kinds of  learning preferences the students intend most and types of learners’characteristics appear in ELT classrooms.This research was conducted through qualitative approach. The data are collected questionnaires, documentation, and observation. The result of this study shows that students of ELT program at UIN Walisongo Semarang tend to study by various kinds of  learning. Among students of  2A, 11.2% are visual students, 16.02% are audio-lingual, 5% are kinesthetic and the rest 14.11% are others, would use multimedia which available in the classroom. Whereas, students of 2B show that 13% of them are visual learners, 11%  are audiolingual learners, 6.72% are kinesthetics and the rest 13,72% are others. Students of 2C, 12% of them are visual learners, 11.17% are audiolingual, 7.25% are kinesthetics and the rest 14% are others

    THE IMPOLITENESS IN THE CHARLIE PIPPIN: A PRAGMATIC STUDY

    The conflict because of impoliteness in using language hap- pens recently in the school and family context. The case encourages the researcher to investigate the phenomena of impoliteness in communication. The types of impoliteness and the strategies used by a person in producing impolite utterance are investigated. Due to the lack of data sources depicted the conflict in the school and family naturally, the novel Charlie Pippin by Candy Dawson Boyd (1987) is used as the data sources. Culpeper’s models of super strategies impoliteness (1996, 2005) are used as the theoretical framework. The finding shows that each character in the novel used different strategy of impoliteness according to their social level. The character has high social level often used bald on record impoliteness and positive impoliteness. This research support the previous research conducted by Mohammed (2016)

    DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING THE EDUCATIONAL GAME “INDONESIAN TRIBES” FOR THE KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

    This study is aimed at describing the educational game “The Indonesian Tribes” as multimedia application in the learning activities for the students in kindergarten. This multimedia application is de- signed to facilitate the students in order to improve their knowledge of tribes and cultures in Indonesia such as the traditional clothes, houses, dances in Indonesia, and the gamelan musical instruments. This application is equipped with a Kinect sensor technology to de- tect the external trigger such as speech and gesture recognition that will further encourage the liveliness; children are play while learning. It is in line with the characteristics of the kindergarten students who love to play and learn in their own imagination. The game is also completed with audio-visual animations in various contents, and interactive nature in terms of  playing and learning activities with a simple description and instruction of the English language. The use of interactive contents in this application enables them to have some senses owned better and more effective, such as the senses of sight, hearing, and motorist functions. Also for teachers, it can increase the teaching creativity and create a good atmosphere of learning. In other words, this educational game can enrich the way children understand the essence of learning through playing
