The aim of this thesis is to programme a microprocessor that is used as a directional microphone to generate different directional characteristics.
The question arises: Is it possible to programme a microprocessor so that it can process a stereo recording in such a way that different directional characteristics can be generated?
To answer this question, a technical elaboration of a microprocessor and its programming was required. This deals with the programming in C++ / Arduino IDE of the microcontroller and own creation of tests to show the results.
As a further basis, only consumer-orientated microprocessors were examined, and the best option was selected and further developed. The focus was also on the reproducibility of the results
Reconstructing the First "Iron Hand" of Knight Götz von Berlichingen and Its Derived Modern Developments: Back to the Future
"Ad fontes!"
Francesco Petrarca (1301–1374)
In the beginning, there was an idea: the reconstruction of the first "Iron Hand" of the Franconian imperial knight Götz von Berlichingen (1480–1562). We found that with this historical prosthesis, simple actions for daily use, such as holding a wine glass, a mobile phone, a bicycle handlebar grip, a horse’s reins, or some grapes, are possible without effort. Controlling this passive artificial hand, however, is based on the help of a healthy second hand
A scoping review of gaze and eye tracking-based control methods for assistive robotic arms
Background: Assistive Robotic Arms are designed to assist physically disabled people with daily activities. Existing joysticks and head controls are not applicable for severely disabled people such as people with Locked-in Syndrome. Therefore, eye tracking control is part of ongoing research. The related literature spans many disciplines, creating a heterogeneous field that makes it difficult to gain an overview.
Objectives: This work focuses on ARAs that are controlled by gaze and eye movements. By answering the research questions, this paper provides details on the design of the systems, a comparison of input modalities, methods for measuring the performance of these controls, and an outlook on research areas that gained interest in recent years.
Methods: This review was conducted as outlined in the PRISMA 2020 Statement. After identifying a wide range of approaches in use the authors decided to use the PRISMA-ScR extension for a scoping review to present the results. The identification process was carried out by screening three databases. After the screening process, a snowball search was conducted.
Results: 39 articles and 6 reviews were included in this article. Characteristics related to the system and study design were extracted and presented divided into three groups based on the use of eye tracking.
Conclusion: This paper aims to provide an overview for researchers new to the field by offering insight into eye tracking based robot controllers. We have identified open questions that need to be answered in order to provide people with severe motor function loss with systems that are highly useable and accessible

An analytical framework to understand individual running-related injury risk response patterns to footwear
Running footwear is continuously being modified and improved; however, running-related overuse injury rates remain high. Nevertheless, novel manufacturing processes enable the production of individualized running shoes that can fit the individual needs of runners, with the potential to reduce injury risk. For this reason, it is essential to investigate functional groups of runners, a collective of runners who respond similarly to a footwear intervention. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a framework to identify functional groups based on their individual footwear response regarding injury-specific running-related risk factors for Achilles tendinopathy, Tibial stress fractures, Medial tibial stress syndrome, and Patellofemoral pain syndrome. In this work, we quantified the footwear response patterns of 73 female and male participants when running in three different footwear conditions using unsupervised learning (k-means clustering). For each functional group, we identified the footwear conditions minimizing the injury-specific risk factors. We described differences in the functional groups regarding their running style, anthropometric, footwear perception, and demographics. The results implied that most functional groups showed a tendency for a single footwear condition to reduce most biomechanical risk factors for a specific overuse injury. Functional groups often differed in their hip and pelvis kinematics as well as their subjective rating of the footwear conditions. The footwear intervention only partially affected biomechanical risk factors attributed to more proximal joints. Due to its adaptive nature, the framework could be applied to other footwear interventions or performance-related biomechanical variables
Optimization of pyrolysis for different waste biomasses - A comparative study of product yields and an investigation of the composition of pyrolysis oils by HPTLC
This thesis focuses on the development and optimization of a stable pyrolysis process for biomass, aimed at enabling accurate mass balancing of the resulting products: pyrolysis oil, char, and gas. Pyrolysis plays a key role in converting organic materials, such as biomass and waste, into valuable resources, contributing to renewable energy production and waste reduction. The first part of the project was dedicated to setting up a reliable and reproducible pyrolysis process that would ensure consistent product yields and enable precise mass balancing across multiple biomass types. This process was optimized to minimize mass losses and ensure efficient conversion of biomass.
Once the process was stabilized, various biomass sources (rootstocks, green waste, sewage sludge) were pyrolyzed, and the resulting products were analyzed for their water, ash, and carbon content. High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) was used to investigate the chemical composition of pyrolysis oils and assess the impact of mixing different biomasses. The results showed that the target compounds (bends, which is not seen in other oil chromatogram) were retained after mixing, leading to increased oil yield (≈40%) and an optimized product (increasing or decreasing the concentration of target compounds) composition suitable for industrial applications. This research demonstrates the potential for selective biomass mixing and mass-balanced pyrolysis to enhance pyrolysis oil production and quality for sustainable energy solution
Numerical and experimental investigation on Centrifugal Compressor
The design and performance of tandem blade impellers in centrifugal
compressors is investigated holistically numerically and experimentally in this thesis.
The major goals are to maximize flow characteristics by creative impeller designs and increase energy economy. ANSYS Workbench software, BladeGen, TurboGrid and CFX modules allowed a thorough investigation of flow dynamics and performance criteria. Its capacity to raise the circumferential timing factor, lower flow losses, and enhance flow stability made tandem blade design the preferred choice. During the design phase, high quality meshes were produced; convergence and mesh independence tests were carried out to guarantee the dependability of simulation findings. Several impeller designs' performance was assessed under varying running conditions including pressure ratios and isentropic efficiency.According to the findings, tandem blade design reduces flow separation and boosts stability at low and high flow rates, so greatly improving the efficiency of centrifugal compressors generally. The study also emphasizes how crucial ideal flow control and posture of the impeller are for extending the compressor's running range. This study helps industrial and automotive sectors' more energy efficient and high-performance centrifugal compressors to be developed
Accessible Operation Methods of Coffee-Machines
This work presents an extension for a coffee-machine that is intended to facilitate its use by people with disabilities. For this purpose, a control method was developed using three wireless buttons and a user interface that allows the selection of several coffee specialties. This selection is translated by a Python script into stepper motor movements fixed to the coffee-machine. With this setup, it is possible to incorporate multiple input modalities such as eye tracking and voice control
