Towards climate-responsive net zero energy rural schools: A multi-objective passive design optimization with bio-based insulations, shading, and roof vegetation
Given the importance of reducing energy bills in the building sector, especially for schools located in rural areas, where detachment from the grid electricity is recommended, achieving energy self-sufficiency is crucial to provide a conducive indoor environment for students while minimizing energy costs. Therefore, this paper presents a comprehensive methodology aimed at enhancing building energy efficiency, indoor thermal comfort, and achieving net zero energy self-sufficiency for a rural school building, by developing a climate-responsive architectural paradigm for rural schools, ensuring adaptability to diverse environmental conditions while striving for energy independence through passive design strategies. Employing multi-objective optimization with the NSGA-II genetic algorithm, passive design parameters such as construction type, glazing type, insulation specifications, roof vegetation, window overhang, and outdoor shading structures were evaluated across six distinct climatic zones in Morocco. Integration of EnergyPlus, jEPlus, and jEPlus+EA software facilitated the optimization process. Pareto fronts of optimal solutions were generated, prioritizing the minimization of heating and cooling energy consumption alongside discomfort hours. Results demonstrate that the optimized solutions effectively enhance building energy efficiency and indoor thermal comfort while achieving net zero energy status across all studied climatic zones. Optimal solutions enhanced building energy efficiency by 18.6 % - 35.6 %, tailored to climate and school design
Bridging Cultures: An analysis of onboarding experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse nursing trainees in Germany
The increasing shortage of nursing professionals in the German healthcare system has led to a growing dependence on international nurses (INs) and international nursing trainees (INTs). This study examines the onboarding experiences of INTs to support their successful workplace integration. To achieve this, a methodological framework was developed by combining the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model with Brenner’s Levels of Onboarding (social, value-based, and professional integration) to assess onboarding success. Based on this framework, a systematic literature review and an empirical study were conducted.
The systematic literature review was carried out in Medline, Science Direct and Scopus for global primary research publications from 2020 to 2024. Due to a research gap concerning INTs, studies on INs were also included. Research conducted in Finland, Australia, England, Germany, and the United States was analyzed to determine key challenges (demands) and support systems (resources) during the onboarding process. These findings informed a quantitative study, designed to explore the specific onboarding experiences of INTs who migrated from Turkey and the Western Balkans to Germany.
This comparative approach identified four primary factors that shape the onboarding experience of INTs: language proficiency, social inclusion, discrimination and cultural differences. These findings can contribute to the development of more effective onboarding strategies. Initial implications highlight the critical role of nursing leadership in fostering an inclusive work environment and the need for improved, job-specific language training. Strengthening these areas can enhance the successful integration of INTs, ultimately improving retention rates and the quality of patient care in the German healthcare system
Characterizing the Dissolving Kinetics of a Cleavable CHic Hydrogel Coating for Biological Applications
This thesis investigates the dissolution kinetics of a disulfide-bridged cleavable hydrogel coating designed for biological applications, including DNA analysis and controlled drug release systems. The hydrogel, modified with disulfide crosslinking, responds selectively to reducing agents like dithiothreitol (DTT). Through fluorescence quantification, the study establishes a time-dependent dissolution profile, demonstrating tunable degradation by varying exposure to DTT. The biofunctionalized hydrogel effectively captures and releases DNA molecules, highlighting its potential in diagnostic systems and targeted drug delivery. These findings advance the development of smart biomaterials with controllable properties for applications in biotechnology, biosensing, tissue engineering, and medicine
Adapting Transformational Leadership Across Cultures
This thesis investigates how expatriate leaders should adapt transformational leadership to collectivistic cultures, with a particular focus on its application in Chinese culture. Available findings confirm that transformational leadership is generally effective across different cultural dimensions, including individualism versus collectivism. However, its behavioural application must be adjusted to align with collectivistic values. Idealised influence should emphasise a collective mission, and inspirational motivation should communicate a shared vision and group-oriented goals. While evidence on adapting transformational leadership to collectivistic cultures is limited, research on Chinese culture provides more nuanced insights. For instance, findings suggest that intellectual stimulation is more effective in China when empowerment behaviour is combined with guidance and individualised consideration — for example through regular developmental feedback and personal attention. Future research should examine specific leadership behaviours related to transformational leadership across a broader range of different collectivistic cultures
Novel Characterisation and Modeling of the Thermal Behavior of Multi-Wire SMA Actuators for Robot Grippers
This study describes the behaviour of a multi-wire shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator, with the bending angle expressed as a function of the actuator surface temperature. The temperature behaviour is quantified based on data obtained from an infrared sensor, and the hysteresis behaviour of the SMA actuator is modelled applying a sigmoid function. The least squares method is employed to identify the parameters of the sigmoid function, thereby enabling the positioning of the actuator with an average deviation of 0.5°. These results provide a foundation for position control in SMA-based robotic grippers
This bachelor thesis investigates the extent to which different monetisation strategies influence the financial and long-term success of independent podcasts. In context of a growing podcast market and the limited scientific discussion of independent formats currently, the thesis aims to develop a deeper understanding of the connections between used strategies, challenges and success factors.
The empirical study follows a qualitative research design. To this aim, guided expert interviews were done with five independent podcasters and then evaluated using qualitative content analysis according to Mayring.
The results show that podcasters combine various sources of income such as advertising, sponsorship, direct listener financing, merchandise and live performances. Success is primarily defined subjectively by meaningfulness, content quality, and a close connection to the community, while financial aspects primarily serve to secure the project. Authenticity, a consistent concept, regularity and interaction with the community are key success factors. At the same time, there are challenges such as limited resources, bureaucratic challenges and the ambivalent role of streaming platforms. In addition, initial investments often exceed the income generated.
The work shows that for sustainable success, the product and concept should initially be the focus, while monetisation models should be strategically combined and consciously integrated into the development process. Continuous quality assurance, building a loyal community and carefully selecting collaborations contribute significantly to maintaining independence and integrity

Avatar Embodiment and the Proteus Effect
As the Internet gradually evolves into the metaverse, users’ interaction with places, people, and even themselves will become increasingly mediated by virtual self-representations, called avatars. Deeply tied to avatar use, the Proteus effect suggests that an avatar’s identity characteristics influence the way the users will behave. The Proteus effect represents one of the most interesting, impactful, and perhaps concerning ways that the avatars will play a role in future metaverse-mediated lives
