    No full text
Working conditions fundamentally affect employees’ well-being. While stress factors such as overtime are well-researched, the impact of poorly designed software is rarely systematically examined. This study, therefore, examines the effect of usability on work engagement and emotional exhaustion among employees. It hypothesizes that higher usability of workplace software leads to increased work engagement and reduced emotional exhaustion. An experimental longitudinal study with a control group design was used for the investigation. At two measurement points, usability, emotional exhaustion, and work engagement were assessed among 327 employees at various locations within a corporate group. Between the measurements, the intervention group received usability improvements to the system and training. The intervention group reported significantly higher work engagement and reduced emotional exhaustion after the intervention. These effects were not observed in the control group. The findings of this study support the hypothesis that usability influences aspects of well-being. Additionally, the results suggest that in the field of occupational psychology, the usability of interactive systems must be increasingly considered

A novel peptidyl-lys metalloendopeptidase (Tc-LysN) from Tramates coccinea was recombinantly expressed in Komagataella phaffii using the native pro-protein sequence. The peptidase was secreted into the culture broth as zymogen (~38 kDa) and mature enzyme (~19.8 kDa) simultaneously. The mature Tc-LysN was purified to homogeneity with a single step anion-exchange chromatography at pH 7.2. N-terminal sequencing using TMTpro Zero and mass spectrometry of the mature Tc-LysN indicated that the pro-peptide was cleaved between the amino acid positions 184 and 185 at the Kex2 cleavage site present in the native pro-protein sequence. The pH optimum of Tc-LysN was determined to be 5.0 while it maintained ≥60% activity between pH values 4.5—7.5 and ≥30% activity between pH values 8.5—10.0, indicating its broad applicability. The temperature maximum of Tc-LysN was determined to be 60 °C. After 18 h of incubation at 80 °C, Tc-LysN still retained ~20% activity. Organic solvents such as methanol and acetonitrile, at concentrations as high as 40% (v/v), were found to enhance Tc-LysN’s activity up to ~100% and ~50%, respectively. Tc-LysN’s thermostability, ability to withstand up to 8 M urea, tolerance to high concentrations of organic solvents, and an acidic pH optimum make it a viable candidate to be employed in proteomics workflows in which alkaline conditions might pose a challenge. The nano-LC-MS/MS analysis revealed bovine serum albumin (BSA)’s sequence coverage of 84% using Tc-LysN which was comparable to the sequence coverage of 90% by trypsin peptides

Strategy creation behaviour and "last gasp" digitalization as predictors of sales performance and cash flow

    No full text
Purpose Although recent literature has examined diverse measures adopted by SMEs to navigate the COVID-19 turbulence, there is a shortage of evidence on how crisis-time strategy creation behaviour and digitalization activities increase (1) sales and (2) cash flow. Thus, predicated on a novel strategy creation perspective, this inquiry aims to investigate the crisis behaviour, sales and cash flow performance of 528 SMEs in Morocco. Design/methodology/approach Novel links between (1) aggregate wage cuts, (2) variable operating hours, (3) deferred payment to suppliers, (4) deferred payment to tax authorities and (5) sales performance are developed and tested. A further link between sales performance and cash flow is also examined and the analysis is conducted using a non-linear structural equation modelling technique. Findings While there is a significant association between strategy creation behaviours and sales performance, only variable operating hours have a positive effect. Also, sales performance increases cash flow and this relationship is substantially strengthened by e-commerce digitalization and innovation. Originality/value Theoretically, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first inquiries to espouse the strategy creation view to explain SMEs' crisis-time behaviour and digitalization. For practical purposes, to supplement Moroccan SMEs' propensity to seek tax deferrals, it is argued that debt and equity support measures are also needed to boost sales performance and cash flow

New year, new gear: Does the next version of an advanced footwear model lead to better performance?

    No full text
In recent years, advanced footwear technology (AFT) has contributed to numerous world records in long-distance running, with new models being developed annually. This study investigated the effects of incremental design changes between two consecutive iterations of AFT on running economy (RE) and subjective perceptions in trained male runners. Participants completed submaximal running trials in the Adidas Adios Pro 3 and Pro 4 models. Results showed a significant 1.31% improvement in RE with the newer Pro 4 model (p < .001), with a decrease in oxygen uptake at submaximal speed. The improvement in RE, likely due to reduced shoe mass, modified rocker geometry, and altered cushioning stiffness, could potentially influence elite competition outcomes. However, while in this study, year to year performance improvements due to model updates were found, these findings not neccesarily translate to year to year modifications in other models and manufacturers. However, the findings contribute to our understanding of how subtle design modifications in successive shoe models can impact running performance

In this work, an attempt was made to develop a pump using electrocapillarity. To this end, electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) tests were carried out. Various coatings were tested, which generated different contact angles and changes in contact angles. These coatings were applied using simple spray and dip coating methods, achieving coating thicknesses of around 20 to 40 µm. The coatings that were successful in the electrowetting cell were then transferred to a porous copper foam with an oxidized surface. However, this approach failed due to incomplete wetting of the structures. Even after repeated coatings, electrolysis occurred repeatedly

Static and dynamic glazing integration for enhanced building efficiency and indoor comfort with thermochromic and electrochromic windows

    No full text
Effective building energy efficiency requires understanding fenestration’s role in regulating indoor temperatures. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of integrating static glazing with dynamic coatings on building energy efficiency and indoor comfort in a lightweight structure situated in a semi-arid climate. Employing a comprehensive numerical model developed using EnergyPlus and Radiance tools, various static commercial glass window configurations are evaluated to assess their effects on energy consumption, thermal and visual comfort, and economic and environmental considerations. This analysis includes assessments of thermal comfort using PMV and PPD indicators and evaluations of visual comfort based on daylighting and glare metrics. The findings highlight the advantages of incorporating thermochromic and electrochromic films, demonstrating significant improvements in building energy efficiency and interior thermal and visual comfort. Notably, double glazing emerges as the most economically efficient and environmentally viable option, resulting in a reduction of emissions by 1522.38 kgCO2/year, with a payback period of 12.86 years. Furthermore, combining thermochromic and electrochromic coatings with optimal static glazing leads to a remarkable 26 % reduction in energy consumption. These results underscore the potential of dynamic coatings to enhance building energy performance while ensuring occupant comfort. This research approach provides valuable insights into sustainable building design, emphasizing the integrated impact of glazing solutions on energy use, comfort, and environmental sustainability

Digital Healthcare Applications for Preventing Risk Factors in Dementia: Requirements Engineering in the German Healthcare System

    No full text
The increasing prevalence of dementia globally, necessitates effective strategies to reduce the burden on patients, caregivers, and healthcare systems. Risk factor prevention plays a crucial role in delaying the onset of symptoms and lowering the strain on resources. But the solutions employed in the FINGER studies are not yet scalable to the wider population. With increasing digital literacy and availability of smartphones amongst the elderly, people at risk can effectively be informed and guided. In Germany, this coincides with recent launch of reimbursement pathways for digital healthcare applications (DiGA). Existing DiGAs do not yet address risk factors of dementia. By leveraging the scalability of digital solutions combined with the positive impact of education on lifestyle, we are aiming at a transfer of risk factor treatment into the wider German public healthcare system

    Risikomanagement für Social Media

    No full text
