Eicosapentaenoic acid alters gene expression profiles in the skeletal muscle and prevents the incidence of muscle cramps in mouse
Get PDFMuscle cramps are painful, sudden and involuntary muscle contractions that are generally self-limiting. However, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. The objective of this study was to establish a muscle cramp-induced mouse model and to investigate the preventive effect of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) on muscle cramps. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed a normal diet with sesame oil, with or without EPA, for six weeks. After four weeks, the muscle cramp group was treated with a vasopressin V₂ receptor antagonist and ammonium chloride. Metabolic acidosis was confirmed by a significant reduction in serum pH and an increase in AQP2 mRNA expression in the kidney of the cramp group. In contrast, EPA administration prevented the decrease in serum pH, increased Akt phosphorylation and shifted MyHC composition toward the slow-twitch muscle fiber type in the soleus muscle. These results suggest that this muscle cramp model may serve as a valuable experimental tool. Furthermore, they indicate that EPA administration may prevent muscle cramps by activating signaling pathways that promote protein synthesis, specifically in slow-twitch muscle fibers.departmental bulletin pape
Young Carers in Suburban Areas: Survey of High School Students from Higashiosaka City
Get PDFIn recent years, support for young carers has become a central issue in Japanese welfare policies, and local governments are required to understand the actual situation in each community to implement specific support measures. In this study, a web-based questionnaire survey of 515 high-school students in Higashiosaka City revealed the characteristics of young carers in this region. The percentage of young carers tended to be higher than the national average, and they were in charge of caring for older adults, though for short times but frequently. They tended to be stressed and worried and felt that the existing support measures did not meet their needs. Furthermore, differences were observed in stress and part-time work situations among carer households and other households. In addition, a reasonable number of high school students who were not identified as young carers also cared for their families. Despite the limitation of a small sample size, the findings of this study may help us re-assess what kind of high-school students need support as “young carers” in the future, considering the local context.departmental bulletin pape

Open factories in Osaka Prefecture started in areas with manufacturing industry clusters and have since expanded. The benefits of open factories for manufacturers are not only internal but also external, contributing to improving the attractiveness of the region where the manufacturer is located.
